Job description

Director of Airwars

Do you have what’s needed to lead and grow our world class organisation, by leveraging our high quality research findings towards better protections for civilians on the battlefield? Can you inspire and direct our outstanding international team, as we seek to hold belligerents better to account?

Seven years after our founding, Airwars is seeking a new full-time, self-motivated Director to play a pivotal role in shaping our organisation as we continue to grow and thrive.

Applications are welcomed from candidates from diverse backgrounds who have passion, compassion, drive, commitment, tenacity, resilience, and integrity - and who can demonstrate the following:

  • Commitment to the aims and ethos of Airwars as a values-led organisation, with a clear and enduring focus on our work towards better protection of civilians in conflicts, based upon our research-led findings;
  • Strong team leadership skills, with a proven record of recruiting, motivating and retaining a diverse team of exceptional staff, contractors, managers and volunteers around the world;
  • Excellent communications skills, both external and internal - and demonstrable experience of effective public speaking and organisational representation;
  • A clear vision of how to evolve and grow Airwars, as it enters its next critical development stage;
  • Direct experience of working in the human rights field - preferably on Protection of Civilians issues - to be able effectively to champion our research, investigations and advocacy work towards better protection of civilians in conflict, with both credibility and expert insight;
  • Senior leadership experience, and a track record of achievement in the sector, either from leading a not-for-profit organisation, or running a significant NGO department;
  • Sound financial, governance and risk management experience and ability;
  • Ability to work with a proactive and dynamic Board in supporting good governance, and  oversight of operational matters.

Our new Director is also expected to help us strengthen and diversify our current funding model; to effectively and organically expand Airwars research towards new conflicts and activities; and to work - both independently and with partners - to best amplify the critical work of Airwars to both global and specialist audiences.

This is a full-time, London-based, direct employment post, expected to begin no later than January 2022. As an organisation committed to diversity, we encourage applications from a wide range of backgrounds - including candidates from conflict-affected nations - who are entitled to work full time in the United Kingdom. Unfortunately, as a small NGO we are not able to provide support with relocation costs and UK work visa sponsorship.

Our full information pack on the Director’s role and responsibilities are attached

 Please send your comprehensive CV, along with a detailed cover letter explaining your suitability for the role,  no later than Wednesday November 17th 2021.
