The Role: Secretary Trustee

We are seeking a new trustee to join our board who can take on the responsibilities of Secretary to the Board. This role is key in ensuring our board functions effectively and meets its legal obligations. The ideal candidate will have some experience or understanding of Human Resources (HR), as we value thoughtful, fair and informed support in matters relating to staff and volunteer welfare.

Key Responsibilities

• Ensure accurate and timely documentation of board meetings (e.g. minutes, agendas).
• Support the Chair in preparing and circulating meeting papers.
• Maintain records in line with charity governance requirements.
• Help to ensure compliance with statutory duties (e.g. Companies House, Charity Commission filings).
• Provide oversight and support on HR matters, including policy reviews and recruitment processes, where relevant.
• Contribute actively to board discussions and strategic direction.
• Act as an ambassador for DOCA and support its mission and values.

Person Specification

Essential:

• Organised, reliable and able to manage documentation and communications efficiently.
• Understanding of charity governance or willingness to learn.
• A collaborative approach and commitment to inclusive practice.
• Strong communication skills and discretion.

Desirable:

• Experience in HR or related fields (e.g. people management, policy development, staff wellbeing).
• Previous board or committee experience (not essential).
• Knowledge of or enthusiasm for the arts and cultural sector.

About Weldmar Hospicecare

Weldmar Hospicecare is an independent local charity that cares for people living with a life limiting illness, such as cancer, heart disease, or motor neurone disease. We also support the loved ones of our patients. We have been providing our care for the people of Dorset since 1994.

Our individually tailored care – where we focus on the person, not just their symptoms and illness – takes place in patients’ own homes, in community hospitals and care homes, and at our Inpatient Unit in Dorchester.

Weldmar supports more than two thousand people across the north, south, and west of Dorset each year. All our care is provided free of charge. We help people live as good a life as possible when their illness cannot be cured.

Our team of staff includes specialist nurses, doctors, physiotherapists and occupational therapists, counsellors, chefs, maintenance engineers, complementary therapists, retail professionals, and experts in fundraising, marketing, finance, people services, and more. A number of dedicated volunteers in many aspects of our work support us.

As an independent charity, we rely on donations, fundraising events and our charity shops to fund our work.

About the role

Weldmare Hospicecare services are rated ‘outstanding’ by the CQC, and we are seeking a clinically experienced Trustee to join our Board.

This is an exciting time to join the hospice; we are in a strong financial position, with many exciting priorities underway, including a big project in the Inpatient Unit and the creation of new outpatient services. We are currently refurbishing and updating our retail outlets and have good partnerships in our bordering counties of Somerset, Hampshire, Devon and Wiltshire.

To support our plans, the Board is now looking to appoint a new clinical Trustee to replace those whose terms have come (or are coming) to an end.

First-time Trustees and those seeking personal development would be welcome to apply.

Who we are looking for

We seek individuals with a fundamental alignment with our charitable purpose and values. With well-honed interpersonal and communication skills, you will bring sound judgement, the ability to think strategically and offer constructive challenge and debate to the Board and senior team.

We are also looking for those with senior experience in the health care sector, with experience working at a cross-agency level. We are open to a broad range of senior leadership experience, particularly nursing and allied health professionals. Whilst prior experience of end of life/palliative care would be advantageous, it isn’t essential.

Seeking a Trustee Director for The Retreat Clinics.  We have delivered mental health treatment and care for over 200 years, and we are still governed by Quaker Values. We offer psychological therapies and assessments for Autism and ADHD, both online and from our home base in York and our offices in Manchester.

Following major changes in our structure, we are now refreshing our strategy and business plan to better meet the needs of young people and adults through in-person and online assessment and talking therapy, supported by prescribing and shared care.  We hold an NHS contract and also offer privately funded care.

Our Trustee team would like to expand, and seek one or more colleagues to support and enhance Board skills with your experience and knowledge base.  Board meetings are held every other month in person in York (approx half a day), with an informal meeting online between.  Trustees with specialist skills may be asked to serve on Committees (Quality & Safety / Finance  etc) and these meetings are all held online. Position: Chair of Trustees

Purpose of the Role

The Chair of Trustees provides leadership to the Board, ensuring that it fulfils its responsibilities for the governance of the charity. The Chair works in partnership with the Chief Executive (or equivalent) to help achieve the organisation’s mission, ensuring it is run effectively, transparently, and in line with its values.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Governance

• Provide clear leadership to the Board of Trustees, ensuring it fulfils its duties and responsibilities.

• Ensure that governance arrangements are effective, transparent, and regularly reviewed.

• Lead on maintaining a strong focus on the charity’s purpose, vision, and strategic direction.

• Ensure the charity complies with its governing document, charity law, company law, and other relevant legislation.

Board Management

• Chair Board meetings effectively and efficiently, bringing impartiality and objectivity to discussions.

• Ensure decisions are taken in the best interests of the charity and are implemented.

• Encourage participation and engagement from all Trustees, drawing on their skills and knowledge.

• Oversee the recruitment, induction, and development of Trustees.

External Representation

• Act as an ambassador and spokesperson for the charity when appropriate.

• Represent the charity at key events, meetings, and with stakeholders.

• Build strong relationships with funders, partners, and the wider community.

Relationship with Senior Staff

• Develop a supportive and constructive relationship with the Chief Executive (or equivalent).

• Provide guidance and support while respecting boundaries between governance and management.

• Undertake annual appraisal of the Chief Executive and ensure appropriate support structures are in place.

Person Specification

Essential Skills & Experience

• Previous experience of chairing meetings and/or serving on a Board.

• Understanding of charity governance and the legal responsibilities of Trustees.

• Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and engage others.

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

• Ability to act impartially, with integrity, and in the best interests of the charity.

Desirable Skills & Experience

• Knowledge of the sector in which the charity operates.

• Experience in strategy development, fundraising, or stakeholder engagement.

• Established networks that could benefit the charity.

Time Commitment

• 3-6 Trustees meeting a year

• Regular contact with the Chief Executive/Trustees between meetings.

• Representation at occasional external events.
