We’re looking for a Deputy Shelter Manager to join our friendly leadership team. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in the daily running and continuous improvement of our busy Shelter.

You’ll support the Shelter Manager in overseeing animal welfare, team management, and day-to-day operations — helping us deliver the highest standards of care and ensure every animal’s journey is positive from arrival to adoption.

As a live-in role, you’ll also be part of our out-of-hours cover team, ensuring the Shelter runs smoothly around the clock.

Key Responsibilities

• Act as Duty Manager, supporting the Shelter’s day-to-day operations.
• Lead on animal intake, ensuring high welfare standards and efficient use of space.
• Supervise and support staff and volunteers, encouraging development and teamwork.
• Work closely with our veterinary partners and the Animal Behaviour team.
• Uphold health and safety, animal welfare, and data protection standards.
• Support fundraising, public engagement, and community relations.

You’ll be an empathetic, organised, and proactive leader who’s passionate about animal welfare and supporting people to do their best work.

We’re looking for someone with:

• Experience in animal welfare, shelter management, or a related supervisory role
• Strong people management and communication skills
• Excellent organisation, decision-making, and IT abilities
• Calmness and confidence under pressure
• A full UK driving licence

Desirable: Animal Care qualification (e.g. NVQ Level 3), experience in animal behaviour or veterinary work, or leadership training.

Sutton Night Watch is a registered charity which was set up to support and raise awareness for the homeless people within the London Borough of Sutton and surrounding areas.

Over the past 10 years, with the support of local business, the local community and fundraising efforts, we have been able to grow and expand into our own, permanent base in December 2019.  From here we are able to not only provide the essentials such as food, showers and clothing supplies, but we are able to also offer our service users a range of health services, benefit advice, wellbeing and educational based courses, clothes, washing facilities and most importantly, a place where people are seen, heard and understood. We also support people to find secure accommodation. In the past 3 months we have found homes for 13 people.

Job Purpose:

The Fundraising Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing fundraising strategies to secure financial support for the organization.

Our annual fundraising target is set at c250k (cash income) plus additional targets for in-kind donations, preloved donations and donated services. These support the growth and sustainability of our operations, ensuring we can continue to provide essential items and services to local people experiencing homelessness.

About the role

As Retail Gift Aid Executive, you will be responsible for managing and continuously improving all aspects of our Retail Gift Aid processes and compliance. You'll play a vital role in maximising Gift Aid revenue, providing expert support to shops and teams, and ensuring systems, training, and communications are effective and up to date.

This is a role that combines operational delivery with relationship-building and collaboration across departments, ensuring the success of one of our key income streams.

In this role, you will: 

• Take ownership of the Retail Gift Aid system and end-to-end claims process, ensuring full compliance with HMRC guidelines.

• Identify, drive and deliver process improvements to maximise Gift Aid income and operational efficiency.

• Act as the key contact for internal and external stakeholders, providing guidance on Gift Aid and representing retail needs.

• Maintain accurate data, generate reports, and support audits – including liaising with HMRC when required.

• Provide training, communications, and support to our retail teams, ensuring understanding and engagement with Gift Aid procedures.

• Visit shops regularly to monitor Gift Aid performance and gather feedback for continuous improvement.

Role Requirements

• Your main objectives is to support the board and senior leadership team in ensuring the charity continues to deliver high-quality, safe, effective and financially sustainable services for vulnerable children now and in the longer-term;
• Under the guidance of the Head of Risk, Audit & Governance, and in collaboration with key stakeholders across the organisation, coordinate and manage the implementation and ongoing development of the charity’s risk management framework; risk policies, risk appetite statement; “risk universe” and board assurance framework / assurance map;
• Undertake deep dive risk assessments and provide assurance over the effectiveness of internal controls from time to time as required by Audit & Risk Committee;
• Undertake a quarterly review of key financial controls and report findings to the Finance, Finance, Investments & Resources Committee and Audit & Risk Committee;
• Monitor and report on the implementation of agreed management actions designed to strengthen risk mitigation strategies / close compliance gaps and provide assurance on these to SLT and trustees.
• Prepare the risk update for SLT, the board and each of its committees including risk heat maps and key risk indicators for the charity’s principal risks.
• Establish effective working relationships with other second line risk, quality and compliance functions and periodically monitor the effectiveness of their activities.
• Liaise with SLT directors to ensure departmental risk registers are in place and appropriately maintained.
• Facilitate risk workshops and provide online training on TCT’s risk management policy and procedures. Meet regularly with risk owners to review risk responses and progress with actions.  Ensure there is an effective process of escalation of significant risks to SLT and trustees;
• Prepare an annual review of the effectiveness of internal control and risk management for the Audit & Risk Committee;
