Job Overview
The Senior Communications Manager is responsible for developing and delivering the Society’s communications strategy to enhance its visibility, influence, and engagement with key audiences. The role ensures that the Society’s voice is clear, consistent, inclusive, and aligned with its strategic aims across all channels—web, social media, email, press, and publications. The role combines planning and budgeting with hands-on communications activity.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Communications
- Develop and implement an annual communications plan to support the Society’s strategic objectives, including member communication and marketing of the Society’s activities events and programmes.
- Work with the CEO, senior staff and officers to shape key messages and deliver campaigns that enhance the Society’s visibility and reputation.
Digital and Print Content
- Manage the Society’s website, ensuring it is current, accessible, user-friendly, and engaging.
- Oversee the production and distribution of newsletters, bulletins, blogs, and reports.
- Write, edit, and commission content for various audiences, including members, academics, policymakers, students, and the general public.
Social Media and Brand Management
- Manage the Society’s presence on social media (e.g. X/Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube), creating engaging and timely content.
- Develop multimedia content (videos, infographics, animations) as needed.
Media and Public Relations
- Monitor performance against income and other targets and report regularly to the Chief Executive and Board.
- Prepare briefings, proposals and reports for Board and committee meetings.
Internal Support
- Provide communications advice and support to staff colleagues and committees across the organisation.
- Collaborate with staff colleagues to ensure clear and effective promotion of RES activities and outputs.

Person Specification
Essential Skills
- Significant experience in a communications role, ideally within a professional body, academic institution, or non-profit organisation.
- Excellent written and editorial skills, with the ability to produce compelling, accurate, and audience-appropriate content across different formats and channels.
- Strong skills in managing digital platforms, including websites (e.g. WordPress), email marketing tools (e.g. Mailchimp), and social media (e.g. LinkedIn, X/Twitter, YouTube).
- Proven ability to develop and implement communication plans, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
- Experience in applying and maintaining brand identity across a wide range of communications outputs.
- Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills, including experience working with internal teams, senior leaders, and external stakeholders.
- Ability to monitor performance metrics (e.g. website, social media) and adapt communications accordingly.

Responsibilities to Include:
PR & Media
· Enhance the charity’s profile among targeted audiences through strategic PR activities and diverse media channels, both B2C and B2B.
· Proactively cultivate, build and maintain relationships with media partners at local, regional, and national levels in both trade and consumer media, including print, online, and broadcast platforms, as well as with individual journalists.
· Write compelling and clear press releases, blogs, articles, and statements to effectively communicate our messages.
· Respond promptly to press enquiries for comments, views, and supporting information, and maximise opportunities for further engagement on relevant topics.
· Support the fundraising team by highlighting partner stories, managing PR efforts, and supporting events.
· Lead the pursuit of media-related funding opportunities, such as The Times and Sunday Times Christmas Appeal and corporate opportunities like BGC and ICAP days.
· Manage nominations for relevant awards to gain recognition and support for the charity.
· Pursue and implement strategic media partnerships to enhance visibility and outreach.
· Work with the Chief Executive to liaise with Her Majesty, The Queen’s press office when applicable, particularly on key events
Content Creation & Storytelling
· Gather and write compelling stories to share our impact with funders, supporters and media through interviews our families, ensuring brand compliance and accessibility.
· Ensure consent is obtained and materials are stored securely in line with GDPR and privacy policy.
Celebrity and Talent Management
· Strategically manage our ambassador programme, keeping our mission prominent and visible, including securing new patrons and ambassadors
· Build authentic relationships with a network of celebrities and influencers to champion our cause.
· Create memorable moments and engaging content with famous supporters that resonate with audiences.
· Ensure our values and vision are highlighted in every celebrity collaboration.
Communications
· Develop, implement, and manage a comprehensive Communications plan that aligns with our mission and goals and marketing and brand work, maximising the impact of planned activities
· Ensure our story is told in the most compelling way by collaborating with our Programmes team, Roald Dahl Nurses, and their patients and families to create evidence-based, impactful case stories, imagery, videos, and films.
· Create and deliver both long-term and annual communications strategies, addressing local, regional, and national activities.
· Handle crisis communications professionally and efficiently, maintaining the charity’s reputation.
· Work collaboratively with internal teams and external partners (including funders) to ensure consistent and effective communication across all channels.

Communications and Campaigns Officer
We’re looking for an experienced Communications and Campaigns Officer to join a busy multidisciplinary communications team. You’ll play a key role in shaping and actioning our approach to communications and campaigns both internally and externally.
Working with a supportive team, you’ll work collaboratively across the Foundation to help us deliver on our new strategy, working on large multi-channel communications campaigns and events, commissioning and coordinating content, and delivering internal comms.

About the role
We're looking for a Marketing Manager to join our fundraising marketing team to deliver sector-leading fundraising campaigns. Working collaboratively with the wider fundraising marketing team, this person plays a key role in the planning and delivery of multi-channel marketing campaigns, which successfully drive multiple millions of pounds of income. Your work will be instrumental in raising money to ensure we can provide vital physical, emotional and financial support for people living with cancer.
As a team, we are responsible for the marketing and project management of several large-scale fundraising campaigns, including Macmillan’s Coffee Morning, Brave the Shave, Longest Day Golf Challenge, Go Sober and the Macmillan Lottery. In this role, you will be responsible for delivering large-scale projects, to ensure the team achieves its ambitious fundraising objectives. The role is a great opportunity to continue to develop as a marketing professional in a large charity context.
A typical week in this role might involve:
- Delivering key campaign actions, like brief writing, artwork review and approval, results reporting and optimisation
- Holding a weekly catch up with a Marketing Assistant or Marketing Executive to ensure they are delivering their key campaign actions to agreed schedules. This could include answering questions, helping resolve issues or helping them to understand or develop a marketing skill
- Leading a weekly call with an external agency partner, to agree key actions and keep a project on track
- Reviewing campaign performance, reporting internally and identifying optimisations
- Preparing for and attending monthly development meetings with your line manager
- Writing an objective for a Marketing Assistant working on your campaign, or providing feedback to support their upcoming review
About you

About this role
The Communications and Media Officer, part of SPANA’s Communications and Campaigns team, creates high-quality content and drives impactful communications to support the charity’s mission and raise the profile of working animals in the global news agenda.
The role involves producing engaging written, digital and visual content across multiple platforms, ensuring consistency with SPANA’s brand and messaging. It also includes managing and cataloguing content assets to support the organisation’s ongoing communications needs. Contract, location and salary
This is a full-time (34.5 hours per week), permanent role. SPANA works on a hybrid basis, with staff required to work for 1-2 days per month (or more if preferred) from our London office. Staff must be based in the UK with the current right to work.
The salary for this role is approximately £33,000 per annum subject to skills and experience. SPANA offers a generous package of benefits to employees, including a pension scheme where SPANA contributes 10% if the employee contributes at least 5%, healthcare cash plan and volunteer day.

Leadership and management
- At least 3 years of experience in a senior communications position, ideally within the charity or public sectors

Communications and stakeholder engagement

Variety is looking for a PR and Communications Manager to join our growing team and take responsibility for our communications strategy to support fundraising, programmes and brand activities. It is an exciting time to join the charity as we have laid the groundwork over the last year to improve our marketing and communication channels and have ambitious plans to double our charity size, to fund life-changing practical support for disabled and disadvantaged children and young people across the UK.
We have a new Director of Fundraising and Communications in place who you will work closely alongside, and your work will be across three areas: content creation including the website, PR and social media. Key to success is putting children’s stories at the heart of our communication and you will need to work independently, guiding the Social Media Officer and freelancers, playing a key role in our collaborative and high-performing team.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
•Content creation – identify and gather beneficiary stories and create compelling content for Variety’s communication channels
•PR – develop a network of supportive media contacts and partners to effectively promote our work and proactively target journalists, writing and delivering press releases as needed
