The Communications Manager will play a key role in sharing the inspiring and powerful stories of our clients and the wider military community we support across the UK. They will be responsible for securing high-profile, meaningful media coverage that raises awareness of our mission to provide life-long, life-changing support, employment and training opportunities to Service leavers, veterans, reservists and their families. As we mark our 140th anniversary, this is a pivotal time for the Communications Manager to develop and deliver an integrated communications strategy across PR, traditional and new media, social media, and public affairs. Reporting to the Head of Brand and Communications, you will work closely with the Marketing Manager and the Community Engagement Manager and their teams to ensure consistent and aligned messaging across all marketing and

Purpose of the job

 We are seeking a highly skilled Communications Manager to lead and deliver strategic communications across all key external audiences. This role is central to driving awareness of the impact of UK Youth’s work, amplifying the voice of young people, and advocating for urgent action to support youth work and organisations across the UK. It is a demanding role, requiring close collaboration with the Head of Brand, Communications & Marketing, CEO, and Senior Leadership Team (SLT) to enhance visibility and engagement at the highest levels. 

Key responsibilities

 Strategic Communications & Messaging:

• Develop and execute UK Youth’s external communications strategy to increase awareness, engagement, and advocacy. 

• Craft compelling messaging that effectively communicates the impact of our work, the challenges facing young people, and the importance of youth work. 

• Ensure consistency of messaging across all communication channels and materials. 

 Leadership & Stakeholder Engagement:

• Support the Head of Brand, Communications & Marketing in delivering high-profile campaigns and media strategies. 

• Partner with the CEO and SLT to enhance their visibility, providing strategic communications support, speechwriting, and media briefings. 

• Build and maintain relationships with key external stakeholders, including policymakers, funders, and media contacts. 

 Media & Public Relations:

• Lead on media engagement, securing press coverage that highlights UK Youth’s impact and advocacy efforts. 

• Draft press releases, opinion pieces, and statements that position UK Youth as a leading voice in the youth sector. 

• Manage reactive and crisis communications, ensuring UK Youth’s reputation is protected and strengthened. 

 Campaigns & Content Development:

• Develop and oversee the production of high-impact content, including reports, blogs, speeches, and social media materials. 

• Lead on storytelling initiatives that amplify young people’s voices and highlight the real-world impact of UK Youth’s work. 

• Work collaboratively with the marketing team to align messaging across digital and traditional channels. 

 Advocacy & Influence

• Ensure UK Youth’s communications support and enhance policy and advocacy work. 

• Develop materials that translate complex policy issues into compelling, accessible messages. 

• Support campaigns that mobilise public and stakeholder support for greater investment in youth work. 

Experience

• Proven track record in strategic communications, public relations, or media engagement, preferably within the charity, public, or advocacy sectors.

• Experience managing high-profile campaigns that drive awareness, engagement, and action.

• Strong background in stakeholder engagement, including working with policymakers, funders, media, and senior leadership teams.

• Experience developing and delivering crisis communication strategies.

• Knowledge of the youth sector, social justice issues, or non-profit communications is highly desirable.

​In this exciting role and working with our award-winning rail programme, the Media and Communications Manager will take the lead in developing, delivering and managing Samaritans’ communications and media activity relating to rail suicide prevention in order to raise awareness, engage supporters & stakeholders and positively influence the wider media’s reporting of suicides.

The Role

​This post will operate at a national level alongside similar posts in the rail industry. It will seek to develop ties with all train operator and Network Rail communications team and will play a key role in delivering Samaritans messages at a national level.

​

This position will work across both the Network Rail Partnership team and the External Affairs team in order to provide dedicated focus, resource and specialist expertise – providing a conduit for these skills and colleagues in the rail sector.

Skills and experience you’ll need

In this role, you’ll need experience of working in a press office, PR agency, or similar role within a wider communications team or media outlet, having developed excellent communication and written skills, along with a good working knowledge of UK media landscape, a strong news sense and experience selling-in.

​

Working with stakeholders across the rail industry, you’ll have experience of influencing, negotiating and, ideally, partnership working. Warm, personable and friendly, you’ll have strong interpersonal skills and be able to build and maintain relationships with many different groups of people.

Highly organised and able to work under pressure to meet deadlines, you’ll be a self-starter with experience of successful project management. You’ll need compassion and resilience to work with exposure to incidents and stories that may be upsetting.

The Role

The Marketing and Communications Manager is a core role. You will work directly with the Head of Content and Communications (HoC) and Creative Content Designer and Animator on the delivery of a communications strategy focused on increasing visibility and impact.

Utilising an excellent understanding of digital marketing and content creation, you will manage the digital and social media channels, leading on the development and delivery of high-quality video, audio and image based content, work on communication strategies to support new research and report launches, and work closely on the production of podcasts including The Sacred podcast.

It will also involve working with the Operations and Events Manager across the online and offline events programme. 

About You

You will have excellent copywriting and content development skills, with the ability to write engaging, audience-focused content across different formats. Highly creative, with the ability to produce compelling multimedia content and oversee production from concept to execution, you will have experience in planning and executing digital marketing and promotional campaigns

You will also have:

· An interest in and/ or experience of podcast production

· Strong organisational and project management skills

· Proven experience of using social media management and Ads manager software (e.g. Sprout Social, Hootsuite, Podigee, Twitter, Instagram and Facebook ads)

· Experience of using social media reporting tools (e.g. Google Looker Studio) to generate performance insights

The Communications Manager is responsible for developing and implementing effective professional internal and external communications strategies for the Diocese to support the Diocesan Bishop and senior leaders as part of the Mission of the Church. You will lead and manage a small, dedicated communications team of two direct reports: Creative and Digital Communications Officer and Webmaster.

As Communications Manager you will oversee the Diocese’s media relations including proactive engagement with journalists and responding to press inquiries. Produce high-quality written and visual content, including newsletters, social media posts, and annual reports. Manage and enhance the Diocese’s digital presence, including website and intranet development. Support key diocesan campaigns and initiatives to increase engagement and giving. This role ensures consistency and professionalism in all communications, to promote the Diocesan vision of bringing people closer to Jesus Christ through his Church.

The postholder will work closely with the Chief Operating Officer and senior leadership team to support the Diocesan 10-year Mission Plan, ‘You Will Be My Witnesses.’

This role is based at St. Edmund House, Bishop Crispian Way, Portsmouth, PO1 3QA. Offering a competitive salary of £45,000 - £48,000 depending on experience, working 37.5 hours per week. 1. Main Duties

Communications Strategy

• Design, develop, and implement the Diocese’s Communications Strategy which is fully aligned with the Diocese ten-year Mission plan.
• Research and identify appropriate methods and channels including secular and religious media to raise the Diocese’s profile and in turn that of the Catholic church.
• Collaborate with partners, such as the Bishops Conference of England and Wales to help shape and influence public policy aligned with Diocesan objectives.

 External Communications

• Proactively identify opportunities for promoting positive news about the work of the diocese and enabling the Diocesan Bishop to contribute to thought leadership and public debate on relevant policies.
• Drafting material appropriate for publication.
• Arranging video to support key diocesan publications such as Bishops Pastoral Letters.
• Build and develop the Diocese’s links with press and media to support strategic objectives.
• Act as the point of contact for sensitive news, advising the Bishop and senior staff about media handling.
• Act as the Diocesan spokesperson when required, providing a positive and supportive representation of the Catholic Church and the Diocese.
• Develop and implement a Crisis Communications Plan, crafting media statements and briefing senior colleagues on media lines to take.
• Organise media training for senior clergy and lay leaders as required.
• Work with Bishops Office to deliver the weekly E-News, being responsible for editorial control and compliance with relevant regulations, e.g. copyright law
• Work with parishes to support our stewardship journey, including developing compelling good news stories about the work of the Catholic Church.  

Internal Communications

• Work closely with HR to Oversee and improve the management of internal communications to foster transparency and engagement.
• Take overall responsibility for organising monthly team briefings for the department of Administration and for other ad hoc events involving parish employee’s clergy and volunteers.
• Manage communication channels such as the intranet, regular newsletters, and staff briefings to ensure alignment with Diocesan values and goals.
• Work with Bishops office on key publications such as the annual directory.  

Website and Digital Presence

• Oversee the ongoing improvements in the functionality of the Diocesan website, ensuring it is engaging, user-friendly, up to date and supports the Bishop’s vision.
• Introduce interactive and video content to enhance user experience.
• Support parishes in developing and maintaining their local websites.

 Support to Key Departments

• Collaborate with key departments to design and implement tailored communication strategies. For example, Safeguarding.
• Provide tools, templates, and guidance to ensure consistent and effective messaging across departments.
• Act as ‘brand champion’, developing, overseeing and implementing brand guidelines to professionalise and standardise all external communications output, whether it emanates from within or outside the Communications department.
• Build and maintain strong positive working relationships across the DSAS and wider Diocese to support the successful delivery of the communications strategy'

Meeting Attendance and Reporting

• Attend meetings of the Finance Audit and Risk Committee and any other meetings required, to provide briefings, regular written reports and seek approvals as needed from the Board of Trustees about Communication related matters.
• Support the work of Multidisciplinary meetings that may be called form time to time to deal with extraordinary events.
• Attend in person meetings in parishes across the Diocese where sensitive matters indicate that an in-person meeting is preferable.
• Professional approach to Online meetings.

Team Management

• Provide leadership, direction, and line management to the Communications team, ensuring objectives are met.
• Conduct regular one-to-one meetings and annual performance appraisals.
• Promote collaborative working within the team and across the Diocese.
• Monitor and evaluate team performance against individual and collective objectives.

 Ad Hoc Duties

• Carry out additional duties as requested by the Bishop, senior clergy, or the Chief Operating Officer.

Working for the RSS

Pension and benefits

Our defined contribution pension scheme can be joined after three months in post. Your contributions of up to 8% of salary will be double matched by the Society (making a maximum contribution by the Society of 16%). Location

The RSS office is in central London. We offer flexible working arrangements, and this is a hybrid role with a minimum two days a week working in the office. In person attendance for certain meeting is required, including all-staff / team meetings and governance / committee meetings that take place in person. Our approach to hybrid working

We recognise the importance of coming together regularly, in-person, as a team, so we can share learnings and spend social time with each other. We also recognise that people need flexibility, and that homeworking enables focused work and can fit well in people’s lives.

We ask all staff to take part in pre-arranged team meetings which take place every six weeks in our office space. We also might ask you to meet in-person with members of your team from time to time, or to be available for face-to- face meetings with clients and partners where this enhances the work.
