The role

The research communications and engagement team at Breast Cancer Now makes breast cancer research accessible and engaging to everyone. Its aim is to highlight the value and impact of research and build continued trust and support for the charity.

You'll use your science communication expertise to bring our research to life. You’ll create content covering Breast Cancer Now’s research aims, progress, and achievements for a variety of channels including our social media, website, fundraising and print publications. You’ll work with members of the brand, marketing and communications teams, and digital teams to make sure research content is engaging and drives brand awareness and support.

Primary location of role and hybrid working

This role is primarily based in our Cardiff/Glasgow/London/Sheffield office. However, our hybrid working model allows full-time staff members to work up to 3 days per week at home.

Job Description

Summary of Job Purpose

The Business and Operations Lead plays a vital role in managing and developing the operational business functions of the organisation and supporting its charitable aims; working closely with the CEO to deliver and improve the organisation’s strategic planning, operational delivery, and budgeting/ finance processes. The postholder plays a vital role in ensuring that the day-to-day operations of the iHV run smoothly, with key functions:

• Leading iHV business and financial management, including accounting, budgeting, reporting, strategic planning and risk management.

o Work closely with the CEO, senior leadership team and our accountants to align financial and operational strategies.

o Manage financial controls, procedures, and systems.

o Collaborate with various departments, including external stakeholders, for effective budgeting and operational management.

• Leading iHV operations:

o Senior responsibility for administrative, legal, and compliance functions, ensuring smooth operations. This will include management of our Emsworth Office, IT and risks, supporting business planning and change management.

o Lead the operational change for a new Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system and website. iHV Project Lead working with the supplier, the Project Manager and a small team at the iHV to ensure that the project is delivered within the specified time, cost and quality parameters of the specification.

o Working closely with our part-time Head of HR, supporting the senior management team and line managers with HR matters, including recruitment.

o Line management responsibilities of designated staff in the corporate team, supporting business administration.

o Working with the CEO to ensure good governance of Board-related matters, collating Board papers and attending quarterly Board meetings.

Key areas of responsibility:

Business and financial management:

• Maintain and develop robust quality assurance processes for income and expenditure, working with our CEO and accountants, to ensure all financial and reputational risks are effectively managed.
• Ensure effective financial processes across the iHV, with systems in place for invoicing, managing iHV payments and standing orders, and chasing outstanding payments and debtors.
• Build departmental budgets, supporting leads with forecasting, budget tracking, monthly monitoring (management accounts are produced by our independent accountants) to inform workforce planning.
• Work with department leads to prepare budgets for tenders and project/ research grant applications, including determining when VAT is applicable.
• Process invoices, iHV card payments, direct debits, standing orders, expense claims forms and ordering of office supplies, with support from the Corporate Team Administrator.
• Support leads to manage contracting, invoicing and reporting to external funders in accordance with funder requirements. Ensure all new funding streams and other costs are accurately recorded by the accountants.
• Ensure management of the corporate member joiners to the organisation, including invoicing and setting up a process for re-invoicing.
• Work closely with the external accountants to provide information on monthly suspense, debtors, mis-postings and general queries in relation to iHV finance. Ensure the iHV’s reconciliation and remittance records are updated weekly.
• Ensure all financial documentation is available for scrutiny as required, including support for annual financial audit by independent auditors.
• Make recommendations, provide advice, and prepare strategic reports and briefings as required.

Operational Management and Governance:

• Support the CEO and department leads in managing human resources, risk management, quality assurance, operational change, and board functions.
• Support iHV business planning and the development of key objectives and priorities for the corporate Team (in partnership with the CEO and other leads within the corporate team).
• Oversee the operational needs of the Institute – supporting leads within the organisation with workflow mapping, business continuity and planning to support matrix working across the organisation.
• Recording and monitoring of business risks across the organisation to enable risk management, reporting to the Board and providing support in association with the CEO.
• Support the board, providing secretariat functions to board meetings, including ensuring all papers are provided on time, managing sensitive information, and taking board minutes.
• Work with the CEO to develop, coordinate and implement organisational policies throughout the Institute.
• Support the CEO with reporting to the Charity Commission/ Companies House and ensuring that the organisation’s charitable obligations are met. Work with external auditors to deliver the annual audits; and ensure that the relevant documentation is held in line with requirements, is available for external auditing, and the delivery of audit recommendations are tracked.
• Support Health & Safety risk management, ensuring risk assessments are in place, processes and policies are up to date, and staff are trained and informed with any changes.

Information Technology

• Management of robust administration and business support systems, including negotiation and management of IT agreements, subscriptions, licences and contracts as required, providing recommendations for improvements and efficiencies to the CEO.
• Facilities management of required IT and infrastructure to include details of equipment held and provision of Microsoft/ other required licences.
• Liaise and schedule work to be undertaken under external IT support contract.
• Lead operational change for new Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system and website – working with a dedicated project manager who has scoped our organisational requirements (almost completed), to finalise the invitation to tender (ITT), manage the procurement process, evaluate submissions with a small in-house change team at the iHV, and make recommendations to the board. The postholder will lead the project for the iHV, working with the supplier, the Project Manager and a small team at the iHV to ensure that the project is delivered within the specified time, cost and quality parameters of the specification and is robustly tested before launching.
• Information management and analysis to highlight issues/ risks and support decision making – work with Head of HR to ensure iHV compliance with GDPR.

Human Resources

• Management of our Emsworth office with line management responsibility for a small number of designated staff in the corporate team who support business management (currently the Corporate Team Administrator), supporting the delivery of team objectives within the iHV Business Plan.
• Support, motivate and develop staff, managing direct reports’ annual performance development review (PDR) and performance management, if required.
• Work closely with the Head of HR to make sure that good employment practices are universally embedded operationally within the iHV.
• Support staff recruitment and the induction of new staff; provide advice to staff on corporate policies and procedures and communicate changes.
• Support the Performance Development review process for the iHV, collating 360 feedback for iHV employees where requested, and maintaining records for annual PDR outcomes.
• Maintain oversight of the recording of annual leave with the Corporate Team Administrator, Head of HR, and department leads.
• Provide operational leadership and management for team awayday (leading a small team to plan this each year), to support team building and staff development.

Other:

• Have an excellent professional working relationship with colleagues to deliver corporate goals and objectives in line with iHV Vision and Values.
• Help at iHV conference and events, working with our Events Manager and overseeing the work of the Corporate Administrator to ensure that venues, travel, accommodation and materials are booked and delivered on time.
• To participate in all mandatory and individual training as required. To highlight their learning and development needs to the CEO on induction, at the annual PDR, and as needed, to ensure capability to deliver key role functions.

Person Specification

Qualifications (Essential)

• High level of numeracy, literacy, and IT skills.
• Degree in business administration or related field, or equivalent qualification/ postgrad evidence of additional training/courses undertaken.
• Programme Management qualification (PRINCE2, AGILE or equivalent).

Experience (Essential)

• Proven work experience as Operations/Finance Manager or similar role. Prior experience of strengthening organisational effectiveness.

The Opportunity

The Business Development Director will have strategic responsibility for income and growth, working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to maximise business opportunities. You will lead development of key partnerships with new and existing stakeholders, commercialisation of services, and lead the communications and marketing strategy. The Business Development Director will set a clear strategic plan for growth, leading our tendering and partnership processes to fulfil our strategic objectives and maximise our impact. In collaboration with CEO  and SLT, you will inform the strategic direction and deliver against key performance indicators in creating a progressive and agile culture. You will lead the implementation and development of income generation, developing and implementing strategies to drive all income streams to drive growth. You will develop a pipeline to maximise income from corporate partnerships, (including training), whilst looking at diversifying the portfolio to generate new business

• Proven experience/success in a leadership role in Charity Income Generation and sustainable business development

The role

As the motion design producer at Breast Cancer Now, you’ll play a key role in helping bring our work to life.

You’ll be creating high quality, engaging content about our life-changing research, campaigning, fundraising, services and health information. And you’ll be part of the multimedia team, where we produce video, photography, motion design and audio that help strengthen our brand and tell our story.

Reporting to the senior multimedia manager, you’ll be producing motion design projects that cover all aspects of the organisation. This includes producing multiple small and large-scale motion projects throughout the year to support major campaigns and projects. Experience of producing long and short-form content with an eye towards social trends is also desirable.

The role may require some work on larger video and photography projects throughout the year to support the wider team, so any skills in video production, video editing or photography would be an advantage.

About you

You’ll have a keen interest in all things motion design and have a good portfolio of work to show this. You’ll be hard-working and highly motivated, with a flexible approach to your work. And you’ll be used to working in a busy team environment and able to work on your own initiative.

Strong communication skills are essential as you’ll be working with teams across the charity, supporters and people affected by breast cancer. 

You must have considerable experience using adobe creative suite, particularly after effects, illustrator, photoshop and premiere. Any knowledge of blender or other 3D software would also be welcome.

What you do  

Main purpose of post 

To build a high-performing fundraising team to drive and stabilise significantly increased fundraising performance across a range of income streams. The post holder will lead the development and delivery of an ambitious and data driven fundraising strategy to successfully deliver Weston Park Cancer Charity’s vision. 

You will be instrumental in the development and delivery of a major 5 year charity appeal.  The appeal will raise the funds to enable a step change in our support of Weston Park Cancer Centre and the impact we have for people affected by Cancer in our region. The appeal forms the basis of the charity’s overall 5 year fundraising strategy.

Appeal Structure & Accountability:

Key Responsibilities 

Leadership

· Champion fundraising across the organisation.

· Be an inspiring ambassador for Weston Park Cancer Charity and ensure this is reflected in the strategies, outputs, and behaviour of the fundraising team.

· Actively contribute to leading Weston Park Cancer Charity as a member of the Leadership Team.

· Work closely with the Leadership Team to ensure that appropriate processes and systems are in place across the organisation, including delivery against KPIs.

· Attend and actively participate in relevant Board Committee meetings providing updates, necessary reports, and feedback on the charity’s fundraising.

· Lead cross-organisational projects in line with organisational strategy and direction.

· Build strong working relationships with colleagues across the organisation at all levels, adopting and encouraging a collaborative working approach.

· Keep abreast of, understand, clarify, and implement new or changes in relevant thinking and legislation, especially those directly affecting fundraising.

Fundraising

· Lead the development and delivery of an ambitious and data driven fundraising strategy across a range of income streams to successfully deliver the charity’s vision

· Collaborate with the Head of Strategic Partnerships and Development to deliver the public phase of a 5 year major fundraising appeal

· Build and inspire a high-performing and results-oriented Fundraising Team focused on delivering sustainable income to maintain and build on recent organisational growth.

· Ensure that fundraising is supported by appropriate business/activity plans, and sound financial plans and budgets; and that performance is regularly monitored and evaluated against plans and budgets.

· Set, monitor, and deliver annual income and expenditure targets.

· Foster a culture of ambition and innovation and support the team to research, develop, and implement new fundraising approaches to recruit new donor groups across all income streams.

· Drive change and implement new ways of working across fundraising and the wider organisation in support of fundraising effectiveness.

· Manage relationships with key supporters and stakeholders and attend meetings and networking events to unlock new opportunities.

· Strengthen and build on existing supporter relationships, ensuring that all supporters receive a first-class experience.

· Support the team to develop professional and engaging fundraising materials including fundraising propositions, applications, proposals, appeals, pitches, and reports.

· Take overall responsibility for fundraising compliance and ensure that in all relevant areas, the charity complies with the law, regulation, and stakeholder and contractual obligations with third parties.

· Collaborate with the Data Manager to maintain oversight of the supporter database to ensure integrity, legal compliance, and generation of appropriate insight to support delivery of income growth.·  

Fundraising Development

· Work with the Head of Strategic Partnerships and Development, external advisor(s), commissioned agencies and the appeal committee to deliver a multi-year major fundraising appeal

· Work with the Legacy and In Memory Fundraising Manger to deliver and implement a legacy pipeline and growth in In-Memory giving income

· Work with the Individual Giving Fundraising Manager to deliver and implement a strategy which prioritises both the retention and acquisition of new donors, enhances the use of digital products, platforms, and channels and delivers the highest standard of supporter care and donor stewardship.

· Lead on the introduction of a charity lottery.

· Work with relevant colleagues to deliver a new strategy and plan which prioritises deepening and strengthening existing relationships and building a strong pipeline of new prospects to deliver multi-year funding from major donors, high profile supporters, trusts, foundations, and companies.

· Support the Data Manager with the adoption and use of Raisers Edge NXT CRM to effectively support data-driven decision making and relationship management to generate supporter insights in support of increased fundraising.

Brand and Marketing

· Working in collaboration with the Deputy CEO, Marketing Manager and external agencies in the development and delivery of an integrated marketing and communications strategy that is driven by audience insight.

· Foster a strong working relationship between the fundraising and marketing team to inspire high-performance and results-oriented marketing to build a community of supporters by delivering a seamless supporter journey that promotes the charity’s work and delivers greater income generation.

· Empower the fundraising team to successfully deploy our brand.

· Work in partnership with the Marketing Manager to ensure content is up to date, factually accurate and to manage reputational risk.·  

People Management

· Create a high-performing team that is ambitious and passionate about Weston Park Cancer Charity’s vision.

· Provide line management to direct reports, setting, and monitoring individual performance objectives and motivating the team to be innovative and professional in its thinking and delivery.

· Ensure all fundraising staff receive consistent and motivating direction and feedback to enable them to work to the best of their ability.

The Head of Project Development is a new and pivotal role within the organisation that will bridge the gap between our fundraising efforts and the development and implementation of projects. This strategic position is focused on developing new projects based on clear evidence of need and alignment with PCR’s mission and priorities, as well as enhancing the case for existing projects. The role will work in collaboration with the delivery and partnerships team to develop cases for support and secure substantial funding to ensure we can continue to expand and deliver impactful, sustainable projects. The successful candidate will be instrumental in expanding our operational capacity, initiating innovative projects, and contributing significantly to our growth targets for impact and the associated income to achieve this. 

Key Responsibilities 

• Project Development and Management: Spearhead the development of new projects and work alongside fundraising to develop bids to support existing initiatives, ensuring alignment with PCR’s strategic goals and funding opportunities. 

• Fundraising Support: Collaborate closely with the fundraising team to identify and secure funding from large statutory sources, including but not limited to the likes of the National Lottery Community Fund, NHS, NIHR, and Sports England. 

• Evidence Gathering: Develop a robust evidence base and demonstrate PCR’s capability through in-house or commissioned pilot work. 

• Strategic Planning: Contribute to strategic planning processes, identifying key obstacles to project development, and developing strategies to overcome them. 

• Stakeholder Engagement: Engage with internal teams, external partners, and stakeholders to ensure future project alignment with community needs and stakeholder expectations. 

Profile of the Candidate 

• Proven experience in project development and management, preferably within the healthcare, research, or non-profit sectors. 

• Demonstrated success in securing funding from large statutory sources or HNWIs. 

• Strong strategic thinking and planning skills, with the ability to identify and address operational and strategic challenges. 

• Excellent leadership and team management abilities, with a track record of motivating others to achieve high performance.

The Head of High Value Operations role is central to our bold fundraising ambitions. The Role 
 
As our Communications Officer, you will be responsible for planning and delivering a wide range of communications that contribute to increased brand awareness of the charity, demonstrate the charity’s expertise and impact, educate the public about cancer prevention, signs, symptoms and screening and support the generation of income for the charity. 

Specifically, you will: 

• Plan, research, create and distribute creative media content, including press releases, blog posts, case studies and videos, to support research, services, cancer insight, fundraising, events, retail, corporate partnerships and campaigns. 

• Proactively seek, identify and engage in media opportunities, such as attending events, organising photo opportunities and meeting face-to-face with case studies.

• Manage third-party suppliers such as photographers and film production agencies, obtaining quotes, providing clear briefings and ensuring work is delivered on time and within budget.

• Respond to press enquiries efficiently and to a high standard. Understand which media enquiries are appropriate for the charity’s brand and key messages and those which are not, so that the charity prioritises only those which are value-adding. 

• Organise TV, radio and press interview opportunities for the Chief Executive, Directors and Heads of. Prepare clear briefings for interviewees. 

• Demonstrate and convey professionalism at all times and represent the charity when communicating with the media, members of the public, volunteers and supporters to demonstrate the charity’s core values.

• Monitor and evaluate the charity’s media coverage and the digital impact of PR content, providing a monthly media clippings report. 

• Provide PR input to the charity’s Leadership Team, Board reports and performance dashboards. 

• Maintain continuous awareness of industry news and regularly update colleagues on key developments. 

 
About You 

To be considered for this role, you will need: 

• To be educated to a degree or equivalent level of education or have relevant experience in a similar role at a similar level. 

• Previous media experience, whether through journalism or a PR / in house media assistant role. 

• Experience in building relationships with colleagues and journalists and managing media opportunities such as interviews, broadcast opportunities and photocalls. 

• An ability to write compelling copy for multiple audiences, and media channels, often translating complicated information into a format that is easily understood by readers. 

• An agile media mind, able to spot the key storyline that will maximise the possibility of media coverage and attract the attention of the media. 

• An evaluative mindset, supporting continual improvement by analysing coverage and associated data from media activity. 

• An ability to keep a calm head when faced with a reactive media situation in a manner that best protects the reputation of the charity
