What does the role involve?
The Finance officer is a new role in the Finance team at the British Pharmacological Society. The Finance Officer will work with the Financial Controller to ensure that all aspects of finance are operated effectively and efficiently.
Who would suit this role?
You will have experience working in a finance organisation and/or experience working for membership organisations. You should pay close attention to detail, and the ability to suggest and make improvements to procedures. Additionally, you should be a good team player with strong interpersonal skills.
The team at the Society is fun and dynamic, and this role would be well-suited to someone who thrives on working in a collaborative setting.
This is a hands-on role that will allow the right candidate to have autonomy over their role.

About the role
The Grants Officer will join our small, hardworking, friendly team and will be responsible for overseeing the monthly grants programme. They will support the Director in collating the board papers for each of the three annual Trustees’ meetings. They will also be expected to help assess the large and medium grant applications that go through to the Trustees’ meetings. The new Grants Officer will be asked to visit charities and projects, which will entail travel across England and Wales. The new Grants Officer will also maintain the grants database, be responsible for updating the new website and be the first port of call for any grant application enquiries.
About you
This role would suit a range of candidates and we are open to candidates without direct grant making experience but the successful candidate will need a demonstrable understanding and knowledge of the grants world. We are particularly keen to hear from people who have energy, enthusiasm, good communication and relationship building skills and experience and confidence with databases. An understanding of how to read charity accounts would be a bonus but training will be provided for the chosen candidate. Fundraising and income generation
- Work with Impetus CEO and SMT to support the delivery of the Impetus strategy and business plan and deliver the public affairs milestones to time and within budget.
- Champion and contribute to embedding equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) across all areas of Impetus' work, ensuring that EDI principles related to Impetus’ mission are reflected in advocacy, stakeholder engagement, communications and public positioning.
- Vision setting and strong line management of the Public Affairs team, developing their capabilities, representing the team at SMT and to the Board and ensuring it continues to make a valuable - and valued - contribution to the achievement of Impetus’s objectives, through building and implementing high quality work plans for the team and ensuring the wider Impetus team is aligned on these.

What the role involves
1. Ensuring that there are regular training opportunities for both new starters and those requiring refresher sessions or updates when new functions or forms are released. This will include running system training drop in sessions to assist with queries / hear feedback, and relaying information from these to the Information Governance and IT manager.
2. To support managing the case recording system help desk – so that support is always ava
ilable to front line workers and other stakeholders.

Working with the Learning and Development Coordinator to support the creation of e-learning training modules for our LMS (currently RISE) Acting at all times in line with safeguarding legislation and guidance in addition to Safer London’s practice guidelines and wider pan-London processes and protocols.
8. Undertaking any other duties as required and commensurate with the level of this post, including covering the Data Reporting and CRS support lead post functions when relevant.

Role Purpose Statement
The Senior Officer, Active Fellows plays a key role in delivering high-quality support to Cara Fellows. This includes leading casework, coordinating Cara’s mentoring scheme to support Fellows’ placements, and contributing to strategic improvements across the Fellowship Programme. The role combines direct support to Fellows, operational oversight and delivery of casework, and collaborative leadership to support Cara to uphold its mission.
Organisational Background
The Council for At-Risk Academics is a UK-registered charity founded in 1933 under the leadership of William Beveridge, to rescue academics suffering persecution under the rise of Nazism and facilitate their continued work in safety. Sixteen Cara Fellows from the 1930s and 1940s became Nobel Laureates, and many more innovators in their fields, including, Nikolaus Pevsner, Lise Meitner and Karl Popper. A number of Cara’s founders and Council members also personally provided places and/or funds to help individual academics; and Cara, known in the 1930s as the AAC, later the SPSL, was closely involved in the successful effort in 1933 to bring to London the Warburg Institute art library, which had been prohibited by the Nazis, and six of its staff. The Fellowship Programme is the continuation of the rescue mission operation started in 1933.
Cara has been a lifeline to academics at risk for over 90 years, as and when world events have placed them in the line of fire: Hungarian Uprising, Cold War, Apartheid South Africa, Iran, Latin American Juntas, Vietnam, Kosovo, DRC, Rwanda, Sudan, Zimbabwe etc. and, more recently Iraq, Turkey, Yemen, Palestine, Syria, Afghanistan and Ukraine. Cara support is typically framed as temporary sanctuary offered at times of heightened risk.
Cara Objectives ‘To assist academics who have been, or are, or are at risk of being, subject to discrimination, persecution, suffering or violence on account of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion, to relieve needs among them and their dependants and ensure that their specialist knowledge and abilities can continue to be used for the benefit of the public.’

This is a critical time to join our dedicated and friendly Fellowship Programme team as we expand our capacity to support at-risk academics from the Middle East, Sudan, Myanmar, Afghanistan, Ukraine and Russia and many other countries.
Key Responsibilities
Fellowships
Casework
· Manage a caseload of up to 50 Cara Fellows, providing tailored support.
· Maintain accurate and GDPR-compliant records of casework activity.
· Liaise with Fellows to coordinate support and escalate complex cases to the Team Leader as required.
· Monitor, research and update visa guidance to reflect changes in complex immigration regulation.
· Keep up to date with relevant information regarding immigration laws, e.g. visas, legal procedures, etc.
· Liaise with independent legal advisors where necessary.
Finance
· Work with colleagues in finance to ensure accurate and timely payments to Cara Fellows and non-Fellowship related payments.

Mentoring Scheme

Essential
- Proven experience in a digital communications role
- Proven experience of using website content management systems (working knowledge of the DNN platform is desirable), including writing, preparing and uploading content, maintaining the backend and working with developers to develop functionality and solve technical issues
- In-depth knowledge and understanding of social media platforms and how each platform can be deployed in different scenarios
- Excellent attention to detail
- Extensive experience in online copywriting and publishing
- Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines
- Demonstrable experience of developing and maintaining effective relationships with key stakeholders
- Demonstrable experience of supporting colleagues with digital communications activities, either through coaching/training or assisting with particular projects
- Excellent written and communications skills and the ability to articulate complex situations to non-technical colleagues
Desirable
- Experience in a charity or similar membership organisation
- Experience of Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign desirable
- Experience of CRM systems desirable (preferably MS Dynamics)

Reporting directly to the Chief Executive and working closely with Trustees and the Senior Leadership Team, the COO will provide strategic and operational leadership across finance, governance, compliance, risk, digital infrastructure, facilities and data management. You will ensure our systems are robust, future-focused and aligned with our mission, enabling us to deliver with confidence and ambition. You will also lead the organisation’s approach to sustainability, embedding practical systems and policies to reduce our environmental impact.
