Job description

Key info:  

Role: Caseworker 

Salary: £28500 

Location: all services are currently being offered remotely, via Zoom, however this is subject to change.When guidelines allow, the role will be predominantly office based (Tooting) 

Hours: full-time (5 days / 35 hours a week) 

Contract: 1 year initially

Salary and entitlements:  £28500, plus pension contributions. 

Responsible to: Head of Casework Services

About Casework at CARAS 

CARAS offers holistic support to refugees and people seeking asylum.  Our casework forms part of the wrap-around support we offer to beneficiaries and is intended to complement our other services.

For many years, we have run face to face appointments and workshops to support beneficiaries to access the specialist advice they need, to make plans, and to work towards their own goals.

We have historically worked with a very local group, predominantly women, paying close attention to gendered experiences of migration.There is potential for significant change here due to the shift from face to face to online working; the changing local demographics which now mean that many more new arrivals are in our locality and changes to the employment prospects of refugees.We anticipate working with many more men than we ever have previously.

Our casework service for adult beneficiaries has been closed since February 2020.Since lockdown CARAS’ methods of engagement and the needs of our beneficiary group have changed dramatically.We are seeking a creative, motivated worker who has ideas for how to rebuild an important service that will welcome a wide range of refugees and asylum seekers, supporting them to access services online and, when possible, running new face-to-face appointments.

About the role 

This role focuses on support for the adults who access CARAS’ other services.CARAS offers advocacy and casework with the aim that people who attend our groups can access support to address issues in a timely, supportive, informative and friendly manner.Our focus is on connecting people to opportunities, knowledge and services so they are able to access these and resolve their issues as independently as possible.One of our key drivers is to work with people to help them build the skills and knowledge they need to become independent. All of our casework therefore builds in opportunities for beneficiaries to make informed decisions, set their own goals, and ultimately manage on their own. 

We are seeking to recruit a new case worker to work with us to maintain, develop and grow the project.  The caseworker will take on a mix of direct work with beneficiaries and supervision and support of volunteers who work with beneficiaries, ensuring that beneficiaries have their casework needs met in a timely and professional manner. 

The role sits within the casework team, which is currently made up of a Head of Service, a youth caseworker and a volunteer team.  The adult caseworker will have a close working relationship with other CARAS departments, most notably the adult inclusion team and learning and development team.  All of CARAS’ work is run with the support of a large team of volunteers.The caseworker will be responsible for building up and managing a small team of volunteers to work alongside them.

The main areas of work are access to education and employment, housing and homelessness, welfare and statutory entitlements, both physical and mental health services, asylum support and immigration signposting.  We foresee digital inclusion becoming an important part of our work. 

Our project is designed to complement local specialist provision by signposting to the most suitable support, clarifying and unpicking issues, writing clear referral letters, supporting people to prepare for external appointments and wherever possible sharing information as to how people can resolve issues themselves.  We are OISC level 1 accredited. 

We want an experienced worker with specialist knowledge of advice work with refugees and people seeking asylum.  

Main activities:  

  

  • Work closely with the CARAS team ensure all adult beneficiaries are aware of and are able to access casework support 

  • Triage requests for casework support; manage a case load, sharing duties and delegating to volunteers where appropriate 

  • Offer holistic assessment to new beneficiaries 

  • Provide direct casework support to beneficiaries  

  • Make thorough referrals to specialist services and support beneficiaries to access them 

  • Follow-up each referral with the beneficiary and agency 

  • Maintain excellent case notes 

  • Support the recruitment, training and management of a trained volunteer team 

  

  • Research and remain up-to-date with specialist advocacy/advice services available

to beneficiaries  

  • Conduct the necessary outreach to build strong partnerships 

  • Participate in operational, strategic and trustee meetings as required  

  • Monitoring and evaluation of the project  

  • Contribute to grant reporting  

  • Share outcomes, trends and learning with the casework team and policy networks

as appropriate to influence wider strategic change 

  • Participate in the running of consultation and review for the development of the

project 

  • Ensure that all safeguarding concerns are reported to the safeguarding lead  

   

Person specification  

We are looking for a highly motivated individual who has a commitment to supporting empowerment through casework.  The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including cultural sensitivity and the ability to quickly build positive relationships. 

Essential 

  • A high level of written and spoken English 

  • At least three years experience of one-to-one advice work 

  • A good understanding of housing, welfare, utilities, debt, access to education and employment, asylum support and immigration with special attention given to the needs of refugees  

  • Experience of recruiting, training and supervising others 

  • Experience of working in, or in partnership with, the third sector

  • Ability to problem-solve and research information  

  • Ability to word process, competence with common data management and video conferencing systems  

  • Ability to work online, and to support beneficiaries in this 

Desirable 

  • Experience of working with refugee and asylum-seeking communities 

  • Experience of trauma-informed practice 

  • Experience of managing volunteers 

  • Experience of managing and developing projects 

  • Experience of developing and delivering training  

  • Knowledge of community languages, which include Tigrinya, Arabic, Somali, Pashtu, Farsi, Urdu 

  • OISC level 1 in Asylum and Protection
