The role in brief

Working arrangements

About the Role

The role of the Media Officer is to support Reprieve’s communications through traditional and social media, in support of the organisation’s strategic and fundraising objectives. You will be responsible for building relationships with journalists, providing media advice to Reprieve staff, and working with colleagues to ensure external messaging is consistent in quotes, briefings, social media content, and on Reprieve’s website. You will help to find and develop stories, collaborating with journalists and external partners on media that has an impact: revealing human rights abuses, shaping policy and raising the profile of our clients.

The successful candidate will have excellent writing and communication skills, and a proven ability to produce exceptional work under pressure. They will have a deep understanding of all forms of media and how to use these platforms for maximum impact, and a track record of securing media coverage on challenging issues.

Length and Salary

This is a full-time role on a one-year fixed term contract, subject to extension depending on funding. The annual salary is £42,193 per annum less any required deductions for income tax and national insurance.

This role is based in Reprieve’s London office. Reprieve operates a hybrid working model and we require staff to work 40% of their working hours from the London office and the rest of the week from home.

Approved Premises (APs) work with high-risk people released from prison, providing a vital element in public protection arrangements. APs offer a level of contact, support and supervision within the community that is unique within the Criminal Justice System. This is an opportunity to be part of a dedicated, enthusiastic staff team at our male Approved Premises in Battersea, playing a key role in pro-social modelling, rehabilitation and community reintegration for those ready to make positive choices.

Working closely with Probation Officers and other community services such as police, health, housing and substance misuse, we provide a stepping stone from prison into the community.

As a member of the Approved Premises team, you will model pro-social behavior and foster a positive, respectful culture with both clients and colleagues. You will actively engage with residents, supporting communal activities such as meal preparation, and contribute to the delivery of individual sentence plans in collaboration with probation officers, police, and external agencies.

Your role will involve providing administrative and practical support, ensuring daily tasks are completed, and following all operational protocols. You will encourage compliance and enforce rules relating to curfews and drug and alcohol testing as required. Keeping colleagues, multi-agency partners, and management informed is essential.

You will be responsible for monitoring and maintaining the health, safety, security, cleanliness, and well-being of the premises and residents, utilizing tools such as CCTV, observation, and direct personal contact. Accurate, timely record-keeping and appropriate information sharing with respect for confidentiality are critical components of this role.

Using your initiative, you will identify and address additional tasks or emerging issues, working within the service to maintain an enabling environment. Adherence to the Approved Premises Manual, Hestia policies, and relevant justice service requirements is expected, alongside consistently demonstrating The Hestia Approach.

This role involves working closely with high-risk offenders transitioning from prison to community life, providing a unique level of daily support, supervision, and tailored interventions. We are looking for an experienced Software Engineer to join our Product and Engineering team.

Oak engineers have a range of specialities and interests covering web application development, APIs, databases, serverless computing, GraphQL, React, and component-led UI. If you have experience in any of these areas, we'd love to hear from you.

We work together in product squads alongside designers, researchers and education experts, regularly releasing new features and improvements to give teachers and their pupils quick and easy access to the highest quality learning resources.

�� What You’ll Be Doing

• Development of highly performant ed-tech applications that are secure, scalable, highly available and accessible to the widest number of users that meet Government Digital Service standards

• Lead the team on specific areas of the system, infrastructure, or code base

• Take an active role in the design and implementation of new processes and tools that improve the user or developer experience

• Provide mentorship for a less experienced colleague

• Professional experience building high-performing web applications with modern Javascript libraries and tools.

• Experience collaborating with product teams to develop high-quality products with large customer impact.

• Knowledge of common web application architectures with some experience architecting simple technical solutions based on product requirements and design.

• Experience in extending automated test suites and an understanding of the value of different types of testing (e.g. unit vs integration).

• Desire to build beautiful, easy-to-use digital products with an understanding of the importance of accessibility in all its forms.

• Great communication and collaborative skills.

• The successful candidate will have a desire to contribute in all areas to ensure Oak is successful. As an Involvement Coordinator, you’ll play a vital role in supporting two key communities: our Involvement Network and Community Involvement Network. 

You will work closely with colleagues across the organisation to help coordinate and deliver meaningful involvement opportunities, making sure they are accessible, inclusive, and delivered smoothly. Whether you’re managing day-to-day communications, responding to enquiries, organising activities, or maintaining accurate records, your efforts will ensure our involvement network members feel valued, supported, and engaged.

At the heart of Marie Curie’s Marketing & Communications department, our PR & Media team works to amplify the charity’s voice across national and regional media platforms. We’re a supportive and ambitious team, collaborating with colleagues across Fundraising, Research, Caring Services and Policy, as well as with our network of media professionals and agencies.   

As PR and Media Officer, you will play a crucial role in raising the profile of Marie Curie through compelling storytelling, high-impact media campaigns, and strategic press engagement. Reporting to the National PR and Media Lead for Research and Policy and working closely with the wider team, your work will directly contribute to influencing public understanding of end of life care, and positioning Marie Curie as the UKs leading end of life charity.   

Your creativity, media know-how, and relationship-building skills will help us deliver standout coverage and meaningful public engagement that drives the charity’s long-term goals.

 

Main responsibilities:  

• Support the development and delivery of national PR campaigns that promote organisational objectives.  

• Help manage the charity’s national press office/newsroom, proactively and reactively responding to media opportunities.  

• Draft and distribute press releases, statements, briefings, and Q&As to position Marie Curie as a leading voice in end of life care.  

• Build and nurture relationships with journalists across print, online and broadcast media.  

• Work closely with internal teams to source stories and case studies that drive media impact and support strategic KPIs.  

• Identify and prepare media spokespeople and storytellers, ensuring authentic and powerful representation of lived experiences.  

• Monitor emerging issues and support on reputational risk and crisis communications.  

• Take part in the on-call rota, including occasional out-of-hours, weekend and bank holiday working.  

• Track and evaluate media coverage against agreed performance metrics.  

 

Key Criteria:  

• Previous experience in public relations (in-house or agency), particularly in a press office/newsroom setting or as a journalist. 

• A confident communicator and skilled writer, with strong attention to detail and sensitivity when handling personal stories.  

• Strong knowledge of the UK media landscape and current affairs, with a proven ability to secure impactful coverage.  

• Demonstrated ability to work efficiently, manage multiple priorities, and meet tight deadlines.  

• A nose for a good story and the initiative to pursue media opportunities as they arise.  

• Excellent interpersonal and stakeholder management skills.  

• A proactive self-starter, comfortable working independently and as part of a collaborative team.

The role empowers service users to manage their wellbeing, build independence, and achieve personal goals through tailored support and co-produced plans. It involves liaising with external agencies, facilitating group and community-based activities, and promoting social inclusion.

The position ensures users understand and engage with the service, while actively monitoring safety and wellbeing. Team collaboration and flexibility are essential to meeting service goals and maintaining high standards of care.

You will also be cooking a meal for service users when you work a weekend shift as well as responsible for keeping the kitchen clean to a good standard for food standards agency inspections

Here's what the team will be looking for

You have proven experience supporting individuals with mental health and/or dual diagnosis issues, either in a paid or voluntary capacity. You demonstrate a strong understanding of mental health conditions, effective communication, and the importance of providing dignified, respectful support.

You possess a solid grasp of Mental Health legislation, particularly the Care Programme Approach (CPA), and apply the principles of recovery through person-centred and strengths-based methods. You work effectively both independently and within a team, supporting colleagues and assisting with the induction of volunteers to maintain high service standards.

With good IT, literacy, and numeracy skills, you confidently use systems such as MS Word, Outlook, and online tools to manage records and communication. You handle challenging behaviour calmly and professionally, maintaining a non-judgemental and anti-discriminatory approach at all times.

Flexible and dedicated, you are willing to work early, late, and occasional weekend shifts to meet service needs. You have a strong understanding of safeguarding and act appropriately to protect clients. Above all, your solution-focused mindset, collaborative attitude, and optimism about recovery enable you to empower clients to make positive, lasting changes.

You must also be confident to cook a Sunday Roast for a group of service users.
