Purpose of the Job

The Director of Finance will join the leadership team, contributing to the overall management of the charity and provide strategic oversight across Finance, IT, Health & Safety and Risk management.

This role is critical in ensuring the charity’s long-term sustainability and effectiveness in supporting people who need us most. The postholder will ensure robust financial management, foster a supportive and inclusive workplace culture, and lead the development of digital systems that enhance service delivery and organisational resilience.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Mission and values

• Champion a culture of accountability, inclusion, and continuous improvement.

Strategic Leadership

• Support the lead role of the CEO on Board Reporting.
• Work closely with the CEO and Board to shape and deliver the charity’s strategic and budget plan.
• Lead the development of financial and IT strategies that support the charity’s compliance.

Finance

• Oversee all financial operations, including budgeting, forecasting, financial control, reporting, and audit.
• Ensure organisation-wide compliance with internal financial procedures and legal compliance.

• Oversee Health & Safety Compliance including management of the organisational Facilities function and the annual Health and Safety Audit.
• Oversee risk management policies and processes including the updating of the Board Risk Register in collaboration with SMT colleagues.

Job Title: Director of Operations - Maternity Cover

Salary: £55,000 - 65,000

Hours: Full-time (40 hours/week) or Part-time (min 24 hours/week) 

Location: Central London / Hybrid (1-2 days in office per week)

About the Role 

The Director of Operations is a member of GiveOut’s leadership team, partnering closely with the Executive Director, they will lead on all operational matters, ensuring GiveOut is an efficient, compliant, and resilient institution capable of delivering lasting impact.

The Director of Operations oversees the charity’s financial and administrative systems, human resources, compliance and risk management, and internal communications. They will support the Executive Director in strategic planning, budget management, governance, stakeholder reporting, and cross-organisational projects, deputising for the Executive Director when required.

Key Responsibilities

Governance and Compliance

• Support the Executive Director in servicing the Board of Trustees; preparing papers, coordinating meetings, and onboarding new trustees.

Part time Director of Communications and Marketing
Contract: Permanent role
Hours: Part time, 21 hours per week
Salary: £60,000 to £70,000 per annum FTE (pro-rata for 0.6 hour week to between £36,000 and £42,000)
Location: Hybrid - home based with at least one day per week in the charity HO in Wandsworth, South London

The Director of Communications and Marketing will combine strategic leadership with a readiness to get hands-on where needed, building sustainable systems, processes, and team capacity that set Back Up to achieve long-term success.

Your core responsibilities will include:

* Building on existing plans develop and deliver a comprehensive 2030 communications and marketing strategy aligned with organisational and departmental plans.
* Serve as strategic communications advisor to the CEO and SLT on reputation, brand positioning, and stakeholder engagement; and lead cross departmental collaboration to deliver shared objectives
* Build and nurture strategic partnerships with key media, influencers, and sector organisations.
* Oversee the successful phased launch and roll-out of Back Up's new brand across all channels from January 2025.
* Ensure storytelling is compelling, authentic, and inclusive, reflecting the lived experience of people with spinal cord injury.
* Oversee creative strategy, commissioning, and content planning, ensuring quality and alignment with Back Up's mission.
* Champion accessible communications that reach and resonate with diverse audiences.
* Provide strategic oversight of digital marketing and online engagement, including social media, to grow reach and impact.
* Champion the ethical use of AI and emerging technologies in communications, ensuring robust governance and responsible practice.
* Introduce systems and processes to measure digital performance and optimise engagement.
* Line manage a team of five in total with direct line management responsibility for two Communications and Marketing Managers, ensuring clarity, accountability, and professional development.
* Model a creative, ambitious, and positive culture in line with Back Up's values.
* Build long-term team capability in brand, digital, and storytelling.
* Manage external agencies, freelancers, and suppliers to deliver high-quality outputs.
* Maintain strong financial management and risk controls within agreed budgets, and report clearly and regularly to CEO, SLT, and Board on communications impact, reputation, and reach.

* Previous Director-level leadership experience of communications and marketing functions (charity or comparable sector).
* Proven track record in developing and delivering successful communication and marketing strategies.

* Understanding of digital transformation, including CRM/data integration, marketing automation, and analytics.

Our vision is a world where all beings can enjoy our waterways, free from pollution. We are a global community dedicated to placing people-powered environmental data at the heart of decision-making. About the role

As Director, you will oversee daily operations, including forecasting and budgeting for the entire organisation (currently c£300K per annum). As such, you will lead on developing a sustainable funding stream for our mission-driven work, ensuring we maintain a 6-month runway at all times. You will build and maintain strong external relationships to help grow and develop the organisation. The Director will provide leadership to a small, remote team (4 x PAYE) and create a happy, sustainable and productive work environment. Most importantly, the Director will ensure objectives are being met - both personal and organisational - to deliver impactful, positive change for our waterways in the UK, and abroad. 

About you

The successful candidate will be a strong leader who excels at strategic thinking, with the natural ability to analyse situations and relationships to maximise impact and return on investment. They will have experience in line management, fundraising and financial management. We are seeking candidates who have experience in senior management in a non-profit setting, ideally within the environmental sector but not essential. Critically, you must thrive in a start-up environment and have a can-do attitude to problem solving. You’ll be one of only a handful of employees and a team of excellent freelancers, so being a team player is a must! Key Responsibilities

Funding Development + Stakeholder Relationships (40%): 

• Significant responsibility for successful contractual negotiations and maintaining a healthy new funding pipeline. Secure six-to-seven figure funding opportunities to provide a sustainable revenue stream for 3+ years. 
• Strategic understanding and experience of competitive and fast changing charitable financial landscape. 
• Build and maintain strong partnerships with funders and other voluntary sector organisations.
• Ensure we are suitably represented at appropriate meetings, events, conferences, management groups etc. and that issues that impact our work are raised appropriately. 

Operational Leadership including Compliance + Budgetary Control (30%): 

• Effective leadership driving business operations and strategic targets. Inspire teams to deliver high-quality programmes and foster a culture of creativity and innovation. 
• Draw up and monitor budgets, with support from the Founder and Team Leaders, and ensure effective management and use of all resources. Ensure maximum operational efficiency and maintain a six-month runway at all times.
• Work collaboratively with the Founder and Team Leaders to build annual Business Plans and long term strategies for the organisation.
• Ensure compliance across product / project delivery, finance, human resources, IT, legal, health and safety, customer services and facilities management. Ensure that all data is collated and managed in line with data protection requirements.
• Maintain and develop effective human resource systems for the recruitment, management, support, training, and appraisal of staff and volunteers. Ensure systems are in place to monitor and evaluate the work. 

Team + Performance Management (30%): 

• Build high-performing, committed teams. This includes line managing, coaching, and supporting team members to create a positive, productive work environment. 
• Oversee the team to deliver comprehensive planning and reporting.
• Set benchmarks, monitor performance, and develop a culture of continuous improvement. 
• Proactively manage the performance of Team Leaders by carrying out inductions, regular accountability meetings, supervisions, and probation reviews, while also setting clear work and development objectives.

Person Specification

Essential Experience and Ability

• Senior management experience working within a small charity or Community Interest Company (CIC).
• Track record of driving operational excellence, including organisational finances and resources.
• Experience of line management, team development and performance management.
• Experience of securing sustainable and diverse revenue streams; including  multi-year, strategic deals worth six-and-seven figures. 
• Proactive approach to risk management and maintaining compliance.
• Experience in a strategic role, including developing organisational strategy and/or developing and overseeing monitoring and evaluation frameworks.
• Experience of working with a range of stakeholders and managing stakeholder relationships.
• Ability to effectively prioritise, manage and oversee programmes of work across the organisation and lead through change. 
• Ability to work under own initiative, delegate where appropriate, prioritise work and meet strict deadlines. 
• Good general IT skills and appreciation of new platforms that can increase efficiency and effectiveness (Slack, Trello, Canva, Dext, Xero, HubSpot, SenseHR).
• Broad understanding of GDPR and other essential legislation and organisational policies, including use of AI.
• Passionate about the environment and the importance of citizen science.

Our client, a well-known anti-poverty charity is looking to recruit a Director of Policy & Engagement on a maternity contract of up to 12 months. This great charity provides front-line advice, advocacy and campaigning and policy work on behalf of people in London beneath pension age, who are experiencing issues around benefit payments, disability and housing or who are at risk of homelessness. The services they provide have become even more essential during the current cost of living crisis.

The role:
As Director of Policy & Engagement, you will lead the organisation’s policy, public affairs, and campaigns function, shaping and delivering local and national influencing to drive change on social security and housing issues. You will ensure the voices of people with lived experience are central to all of the organisation’s work, embedding meaningful participation across the organisation, in governance, services, policy and campaigns.

You will also oversee strategic external communications to support the organisation’s influencing, brand and fundraising objectives and will direct all fundraising for your department including managing funder relationships, identifying opportunities and leading on bid writing and reporting.
 
This is a senior leadership role with responsibility for influencing policy and practice locally and nationally and representing the charity as a spokesperson in the media, with government ministers, MPs, and other senior stakeholders. 
 
You will manage a small multidisciplinary team of four, ensuring integrated effective delivery across the organisation. 
 
The role will cover strategic leadership, policy, public affairs & campaigns, stakeholder & media engagement, external communications, embedding participation, fundraising leadership, team leadership and cross-organisational Integration.

The person:
The successful candidate will be a strategic, politically astute leader with experience of leading policy, public affairs and campaigns at a senior level. They will have experience of integrating research campaigns, participation, external communications and fundraising to deliver impact locally and nationally. They will have excellent media stakeholder and political engagement skills, with experience of acting as a spokesperson for an organisation. This person will value and embed lived experience in all aspects of their work and will have a strong understanding of social security and housing policy. 

This person will also have substantial experience of leading on research for social policy influencing purposes in addition to having developed and shaped policy  for an organisation in a charity which works towards combatting poverty and other social justice issues. Having managed political and media engagement and external influencing activities in the past, this person will be an effective relationship manager both internally and externally, in addition to having provided knowledge based leadership to small teams in the charity sector. In addition to being a highly effective project manager, this person will be a very strong communicator both verbally and in writing, and will be fully committed to the aims and objectives of this anti-poverty charity.
