We're looking for an inspiring Strategic Communications Manager who will work closely with the Executive Director of our directorate (Marketing, Fundraising & Engagement - MFE) and their Senior Leadership Team and own the coordinated approach to strategic and integrated communications. You will plan and deliver internal communications and engagement activity that maximises the impact of our directorate, including managing leadership forums, and supporting key strategic initiatives on behalf of the Executive Director.

What will I be doing?

• To strategically plan and deliver a coordinated programme of internal communications and engagement activity which ensures our directorate is and continues, to be a great place to work. To evaluate the impact of this communication, including using internal data (e.g. staff surveys) to plan interventions that improve employee experience

• Be responsible for managing, compiling and drafting a range of communications for the Executive Director including fortnightly briefings, analyses & speeches, personal social media accounts, and being fully aware of current/ future issues within our directorate and the wider organisation

• Lead the planning of an engaging annual directorate away day event and quarterly broadcasts that connect and inspire our people

• Collaborate with teams within the Communications department and other Marketing, Fundraising and Engagement teams in the oversight, development and delivery of the MFE internal communications strategy

• Develop and execute a comprehensive portfolio of external communications from the directorates senior leadership team targeted at specific audiences across key channels, in order to champion CRUK as an attractive employer and destination charity partner

• Support the Executive Director on key strategic and change initiatives as required, including working with relevant members of the senior leaders to facilitate progress on change

What are you looking for?

• Significant internal communications experience, or demonstrable experience in a related field (e.g. Public Relations, Marketing Communications, Employee Engagement etc) preferable. Ideally, this would have been gained in a large organisation with a dispersed/ hybrid workforce.

• Strong understanding of effective internal and external communication strategies and plans. Ability to create compelling content for various communication channels

• Analytical mindset with the ability to measure and evaluate the success of strategic communication and engagement initiatives

• Proven ability to create and deliver high impact communications through a range of channels within tight timeframes

• Outstanding written and verbal communication skills with proven ability to develop engaging briefings, presentations and speeches

• Excellent at managing competing demands from internal stakeholders

• Excellent interpersonal and networking skills with proven ability to develop and manage strong relationships with a wide range of people at all levels of the organisation

• Experience working with senior leaders in a facilitative capacity, confidence to influence upwards and challenge thinking at all levels

Salary: £39,197 per annum

This position is part of the Alumni Engagement team within the Cambridge University Development and Alumni Relations office. As the Digital Campaign Manager you will use your skills to build and lead projects and creative digital-first campaigns to support Syria’s heroic civil society. You will be responsible for delivering campaigns that advance The Syria Campaign’s goals and mission, working with allies and partners to elevate their voices and demands to a global audience. You will be responsible for creating impactful online campaign actions from petitions to “email your MP” moments, running an email programme to engage our large online supporter base (from idea generation to writing, delivery and analysis), producing creative social media campaigns, and responding to real world events. You will reach new supporters and key audiences through growth-oriented digital campaigns. 

This is a full-time position that reports to the Campaign Director. The job is remote and can be done anywhere from European or Middle Eastern time zones.

The Syria Campaign

The Syria Campaign is a small, fast moving, and powerful human rights organisation that is building new ways for digital and creative communications to have impact. We work to support Syria’s heroes in the struggle for freedom and democracy, partnering with civil society actors inside and outside the country. We’ve moved beyond the limitations of an “online movement builder” or traditional NGO, fusing the best elements of think tanks, creative agencies, and digital mobilisation to shift the narrative on Syria.

Thirteen years since the Syrian people took to the streets to demand freedom and democracy, there are still millions of civilians at risk of military attack, over 100,000 people remain illegally detained and disappeared, and there has been nearly no accountability for the victims and survivors of war crimes. The Syria Campaign works to keep Syria in the international spotlight to increase the cost of attacks on civilians, help build the power of civil society, advocate for a vision of real peace and justice, and build international solidarity with the Syrian people.

We’ve raised the profile of Syrian groups such as the White Helmets rescue workers, helping secure them millions of dollars to continue their life-saving work and making them famous around the world. We’ve supported the Families for Freedom, a women-led movement of the families of the disappeared in Syria, to ensure their demands are heard. We work with dozens of partners across Syria who trust us deeply. Syria is full of heroes and we’re privileged enough to work with them. After 13 years of conflict and crisis in Syria, we have to fight hard to make sure the issues that matter to us and our partners get the focus and support they need. We refuse to let Syria disappear from the attention of the world, and we will work until we see justice served. The Digital Campaign Manager will play a key role as The Syria Campaign develops new strategies and approaches to achieve our goals.

What you’ll be responsible for

Developing and leading far-reaching digital campaigns with our Syrian partners to make their demands heard on the international stage, that capitalise on reactive campaign moments. You will be campaigning for freedom and justice for Syria’s disappeared, for the protection of civilians and humanitarian workers from the bombs, and for support for educators, media activists and other heroic civil society actors on the ground in Syria. 

Creating high-quality digital campaign content. You will work closely with our small and talented campaign team to write amazing copy across a range of campaign materials, including through supporter emails, advocacy briefs, blogs, and microsites. You will lead on digital advocacy opportunities to mobilise our supporters to take action in solidarity with the demands of our Syrian partners through petitions, fundraisers and other actions. Working closely with the media team you will push forwards creative visuals for social media including graphics, videos and commentary, including commissioning and managing creatives. 

Leading our campaign email programme. You will manage our supporter email programme in collaboration with designers and developers. This includes devising and drafting regular multilingual campaign emails to keep our large supporter base engaged, testing out best practices to grow and maintain those who support us, and analysing our success. You will also build action pages, run fundraisers for our Syrian partners, and manage Facebook ads.

Organising and coordinating events and actions, amplified online. You will manage events and actions that influence politicians and decision makers to meet the demands of our Syrian civil society partners – making sure they have maximum impact and reach our global audience.

Qualifications

Essential skills:

Campaign strategy:

• At least 4 years experience mobilising targeted, highly creative digital campaigns for change in a charity, non-profit, campaigns, marketing or political environment

• An excellent track record within advocacy, storytelling, digital mobilisation, or content creation

• Understanding international media, advocacy, public campaigning and current trends in social media

• Commitment to a free and democratic future for Syria, global justice and human rights 

• Sensitivity in working with partners including survivors of human rights atrocities and families of victims

• Commitment to fostering a feminist organisation and promoting feminist campaigns

Copywriting and storytelling:

• Excellent copywriting and storytelling skills in English. Experience of devising high-performing campaign emails, social media content, blogs, microsites and other communications that compel supporters and decision makers to take action.

• Experience writing high-level advocacy communications to a range of stakeholders.

Digital skills and social media:

• Experience managing an email list of more than 10,000 supporters and running a campaign email programme, including analytics to boost growth, engagement, and fundraising. Experience of designing and analysing A/B tests e.g. subject line tests.

• Experience building email campaigns and action pages on Action Kit (preferred) or a similar campaign CMS (Content Management System) platform, and basic HTML skills.

• Skilled at drafting high-performing social media content for a public-facing organisation and an understanding of the different social media platforms. 

• Experience of placing effective Facebook and/or Google Ads.

• Some design experience e.g. using Canva to make social posts.

• Experience using digital tools such as WordPress

Team work:

• Experience working with people from a variety of backgrounds

• Flexibility to work on a remote team across multiple time zones. This requires the ability both to work independently and to collaborate virtually

Desirable skills (non-essential):

• High quality written and verbal Arabic

• Basic video editing skills

• More advanced data analysis skills e.g. using SQL

• Knowledge of German or French language

The deal

The Syria Campaign is committed to making sure everyone on the team is happy, productive, and motivated. Here’s how we do that:

A salary of £40,000 - £50,000, in line with international organisations. The role is a full-time position, although 4 days can be considered.

The job is remote and can be done anywhere in Middle Eastern or European time zones. We have team members in Berlin, London, Rabat, New York, Marseille and Leipzig, and provide you with a space in a co-working office wherever you are based. We have full staff retreats every year to keep us connected.

How you will make a difference

As Business Development and Engagement Manager within the Workplace Mental Health & Training team, you will play a pivotal role in driving growth, partnerships, and engagement from corporate and community settings for both Mental Health UK and Rethink Mental Illness. You will work to secure funding from a wide range of sources, including commercial activity, public sector contracts and grant funding, to allow our work to continue and grow.

Working in our National Programmes team, you will ensure that we evaluate, plan for and respond effectively to bids and tenders, lead on the development of proposals, and support service delivery teams in implementing successful tenders/proposals. You will manage a Senior Business Development Officer who supports our work in positioning the organisation to respond to new bids and tenders and, where required, support the implementation of new services.

The Charity

The Youth Adventure Trust is a youth development charity working with vulnerable young people aged 11 to 16 years old from Wiltshire and Swindon. Our outdoor activity based YAT Adventure Programme enables young people to challenge themselves, experience success, learn to go beyond their own expectations and grow in confidence. Through a series of residential camps and day activities they are able to build resilience, self esteem and develop social and life skills. The YAT Resilience Programme works to the same outcomes through a year long programme of monthly activities, home-based challenges and reflective practice. Our Mentoring Programme works with those young people in need of some additional individualised support at the end of our other programmes. The Trust’s Bursary Programme is open to all those young people who have completed an initial programme, in order to assist their next steps into further activities. Our aim is to make a lasting improvement to the lives of vulnerable young people. All our services are provided completely free of charge to the young people who are nominated by schools and other youth organisations to take part. 

The Role

We are looking for an experienced, dynamic and motivated Adventure Programme Support Manager to support both young people and volunteers on our Adventure Programme. Working alongside the Programme Managers you will act in a support function across the activity days and camps, and be involved in direct one to one support for young people. You will also work alongside the Volunteering Lead to recruit, manage and support the volunteers who are front and centre of ensuring our young people’s positive experiences and outcomes. This is a diverse role with the opportunity to make a real difference to the lives of vulnerable young people both through direct work and supporting the wider team.

Programme Support

This aspect of the role includes;

• Attending residential camps and activity days throughout the year, assisting with organising and delivering the Adventure Programme.

• Ensuring the highest standards of support, safety and safeguarding across the programme and all aspects of the Youth Adventure Trust’s work.

• Carrying out direct work with young people to help support their needs and fulfil the Youth Adventure Trust’s aims.

• Supporting work with the young people’s families to promote full attendance, effective participation and ensure they have all the information they require.

• Supporting work with our referral partners to ensure they have an excellent understanding, relationship and experience with the Youth Adventure Trust.

• Contributing to ongoing feedback to young people, parents, carers and schools.

• Supporting the effective monitoring of the programme and measurement of young people’s developmental outcomes.

• Working with the Programme Managers to support young people moving on to the Mentoring Programme, and promoting take up of the Bursary Programme. 

• Supporting the development of further opportunities for young people both during and after their YAT journey. 

• Assisting the day-to-day administration and management of the programme. This may include maintaining a database, producing written communications and reports, information leaflets, website updates, budget monitoring, booking and negotiating with providers, and an array of detailed record keeping.

• Creating website and social media content to highlight and  promote YAT’s work. 

Volunteer Management 

Volunteers are critical to the success of our programme for vulnerable young people; recruiting, supporting and developing capable, skilled, empathetic, engaging and committed volunteers is essential to the impact of our work.

This aspect of the role includes;

• Promoting volunteering opportunities and recruiting new volunteers to the organisation to ensure needs are met.

• Acting as a key point of contact for volunteers, maintaining communication and engagement with the charity.

• Administering all aspects of a volunteer’s involvement with the Trust, including completing the relevant checks and references, record keeping and database maintenance. 

• Organising, preparing and information sharing with volunteers to ensure they are ready to fulfil their role. 

• Supporting volunteers in their role on our Adventure Programme, facilitating opportunities for informal supervision and debriefing. Our volunteers work tirelessly to ensure the young people get as much as possible from their time with the Youth Adventure Trust, and often deal with challenging and impactful situations.

• Developing and coaching volunteers in their role through working alongside them as they support young people on our Adventure Programme residential camps and day activities. 

• Creating and delivering training opportunities for new and existing volunteers.

• Creating website, newsletter and social media content to promote volunteering and engagement with the charity. 

• Supporting our Volunteer Committee in their functions which include organising awareness raising and social events.

• Developing opportunities for a diverse portfolio of  volunteering roles within the organisation. 

• Supporting the fundraising team through providing feedback, reports or event support.

Across the role you will;

• Be involved in sector networking and awareness raising on behalf of the Trust.

• Act as an ambassador for the Youth Adventure Trust at all times.

The post is subject to a six months’ probationary period.

The Candidate

To be up to the challenge you’ll need an excellent understanding and a proven track record of relevant experience working with vulnerable and challenging young people. You’ll need demonstrable skills at building effective relationships with young people, parents/carers, and professional organisations. In addition, you’ll need an excellent understanding of volunteering and relevant experience working with and managing volunteers. You’ll need strong influencing and motivational skills; the capacity to get the best out of people and confidently deal with issues. You’ll be an excellent communicator, planner and problem solver, a strong team player and an exemplary role model.

We need someone with:- 

• Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people.

• Relevant experience of working with young people aged 11 - 14 years old, preferably in a residential environment as well as outside of this.

• Relevant experience of working with volunteers in the Third Sector, including recruiting, supporting and managing volunteers.

• Knowledge of volunteering issues and legal requirements.

• Experience of delivering training and strong facilitation skills.

• Experience in working in partnership with other professional organisations.

• Strong team skills with the ability to motivate and support a wide range of people.

• Self-motivation with the ability to work on their own initiative to plan and manage their workload.

• Strong IT skills including experience of MS Office, databases and social media.

• Knowledge of marketing and promotion, with an ability to use those skills to promote opportunities effectively.

• Excellent administrative skills and a methodical and thorough approach.

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

• The ability to perform well and problem solve in high-stress and changing situations.  Ability to be flexible and dynamic in approach.

• A positive attitude, high energy and enthusiasm for the work of the Youth Adventure Trust. A personal interest in and an understanding of the positive impact outdoor adventure, especially for vulnerable young people, and a desire to help inspire young lives.

In addition:-

• The ability to work flexible hours including occasional evenings, weekends and a handful of residential trips as required is essential - if you are looking for a predictable Monday to Friday, 9-5, work environment throughout the year, this won’t be the right fit.

Malaria No More UK are looking for an enthusiastic and driven Senior Media and Communications Manager to support the Head of Communications on the leadership, planning and delivery of MNMUK’s media strategy to raise awareness, engage stakeholders and drive support for our cause. This role will support MNMUK’s campaigning and activity in the UK and internationally, working across the organisation and working closely with colleagues leading our advocacy, government relations, political campaigning and partnerships work.  This role will also support MNMUK’s corporate communications work, specifically copywriting our core organisational materials, including board & annual reports.

Communications: 

• Lead and deliver Malaria No More UK’s media strategy, including relationship building with media outlets, journalists and influencers to drive tactical, political and news media coverage.
