Hearing Dogs for Deaf People has been creating life-changing partnerships between hearing dogs and deaf recipients since 1982. As well as acting as an ear to their partners and alerting them to sounds, the charity’s clever and expertly trained dogs help deaf people to live life with confidence and independence, whilst providing love, companionship and emotional support.

Following on from a strategic review, the charity is now looking to build a new Income Generation Directorate, to enable them to transform many more lives across the UK. The Head of Philanthropy will play a central role in this growth, helping Hearing Dogs deliver their goals to diversify income, expand their philanthropy programme and increase engagement and impact.

The role will be responsible for developing and implementing a multi-year major donor strategy to grow income and build a robust pipeline of supporters. You will personally manage a portfolio or high-value prospects and donors, and will lead on bespoke cultivation and stewardship plans, ensuring that all the charity’s donor engagement is tailored, strategic and high-impact. The role also offers a rare chance to build your own high-performing team, recruiting, managing and supporting the development of Principal Gifts and Major Giving members of staff. 

The successful candidate will have a proven track record in personally securing six figure + gifts from individual donors, as well as a background in major donor fundraising, philanthropy or private wealth engagement.  You will have experience of working with senor stakeholders and possess strong relationship management and interpersonal skills. Previous experience of successfully establishing a philanthropy and special events function from scratch in a charity setting would be advantageous.

Main Purpose of the Role:

To manage, lead and support the Fundraising and Communications Team to retain donors, increase income and provide clear direction for our communications. This role will involve supporting relationships with sponsors of Action Duchenne’s International Conference, developing and implementing the fundraising and communications strategy, and reviewing our case for support for our core work and projects.

Specific Tasks:

The focus areas and key deliverables of this role are as follows:

• Develop and deliver on a clear fundraising and communications strategy, with annual action plans and clear objectives and KPIs for team members.

• Understand and keep abreast of sector trends and compliance updates relating to fundraising and communications

• Develop and maintain oversight of all budgets, targets, forecasts and processes relating to fundraising and communications

• Co-ordinate the prioritising of income streams, including community, individual giving, corporate, legacy and trust and grants

• Research, identify, and where there is capacity, pursue income generation opportunities that match the objectives of Action Duchenne

• Ensure Action Duchenne is compliant with all applicable elements of the Fundraising Regulator’s Code of Fundraising Practice, law, and the Charity Commission relating to fundraising

• Lead on the development and delivery of monthly reporting of engagement and support contact, which will feed into the wider All Through Support journey. 

• To work with the Head of Operations and Events to contribute to Agenda topics and speakers from the community; assign roles for the conference to the Support Team.

• Establish a database for external stakeholders also supporting those living with Duchenne on a national basis, fed in to from the Support Team.

• To develop a triaging and caseload process for the Support Team, and how best to regularly monitor this.

• Be involved in the recruitment, selection, and induction of volunteers appropriate to your area of work. 

• Coordinate cover for the Support Team when there is sickness or leave.

Our current dormant assets programme, Young Start distributes money from dormant accounts on behalf of the Scottish Government to projects that are run for and by young people aged eight to 25.  Since 2012, it has distributed £75 million to thousands of projects across Scotland.

Working to the Strategic Communications Lead for Scotland you will be responsible for telling the story of our dormant assets funding across social media, press and digital platforms to a variety of audiences.

Responsibilities include:

• leading on all regular announcements of dormant assets funding to the media and stakeholders
• interviewing young people behind the projects to produce engaging content for media features, case studies and online social media channels
• managing the yearly production of the Young Start Annual Report, at the request of the Scottish Government.
• Support proactive communications campaigns from story identification to coverage
• Build and maintain relationships with Scotland’s national, regional and specialist media.
• Respond to dormant assets related media enquiries and contribute to rapid response communications during reputational issues.

• To develop & implement flexible, user friendly monitoring and evaluation tools to gather impact & evidence from different stakeholders (e.g. beneficiaries who are people with learning disabilities, parents & carers, wider eco-system of partners and supporters).
• To ensure data is collected in ways that are accessible and co-designed, so that people with learning disabilities can help shape how their views and experiences are gathered and shared. This includes using creative and inclusive tools that reflect DanceSyndrome’s values of equality, respect, and inclusion.
• To ensure we use a consistent and streamlined approach to gathering data.

• Cross-programme collaboration: Collaborate with the wider-Foundation, particularly in harmonising our advocacy and creative work with the Foundation’s expanded programme of grants to Commonwealth civil society.
• Event management: Designing and leading impactful platforms and events where civil society can come together and influence policymakers.
• Team leadership: Managing a team of diverse, dedicated professionals, providing guidance and coaching, and fostering a collaborative work environment.
• Monitoring and evaluation: Working with the wider team to track performance against our progress markers and collect evidence so that we can tell our story of change.
• Reporting: Preparing reports for our board of governors and communicating programme progress and impact to our stakeholders.
• Representing the Foundation: Attending and participating in meetings and events nationally and internationally.

We seek an individual with strong knowledge of international development and diplomacy, extensive experience in programme leadership and event management, and a demonstrated capacity to lead a high-performing team. An understanding of the power of art and creative expression is essential, preferably with experience of how the arts can bring about social change. Excellent communication and strategic thinking skills are essential, along with a highly practical, solutions-based mindset. Appropriate tertiary qualifications or additional experience in lieu of such qualifications are required.

The Caring Family Foundation (TCFF) is dedicated to improving the lives of women, with children at the heart of all that we do. We are a grant-giving organisation with projects both in the UK and in Brazil. In the UK, our work is focused on tackling child poverty and domestic abuse.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work as part of a small, committed team in a fast-paced environment. The role will involve the management of TCFF grants, contribution to its strategic objectives, and the planning and implementation of communications’ events.

Responsibilities

• In close collaboration with the Senior Project Manager, to manage the delivery of grants, ensuring that they are in line with TCFF’s objectives, values and criteria.
• To monitor grants closely and ensure regular and accurate reporting.
• To maintain records of all grant reports, awards and applications, and to monitor milestones.
• To build close working relationships with grant partners.
• To prepare grants financial overviews in keeping with the agreed annual budget.
• To develop strong Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning frameworks, in collaboration with TCFF’s data agency.
• To develop and maintain a strong network of community partners, government agencies, and other relevant organisation to enhance synergies, increase TCFF visibility and credibility.
• To lead on planning and implementing visits to grant partners with the TCFF Communications’ team to capture TCFF’s work.
• To keep informed about developments in TCFF’s fields of work and collaborate with the Senior Project Manager on the strategic direction.
• To keep informed about government and other stakeholders’ best practices, research and legislation related to our fields of work.

Qualifications, skills and experience

Essential

• Educated to degree level or equivalent qualification/experience.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience working in charity programme management.
• Solid experience in overseeing grant budgets and Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning frameworks.
• Strong understanding of trauma-informed care principles and culturally responsive approaches to serving diverse populations.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build rapport with beneficiaries, staff, volunteers, and community partners.
• Proven ability to prioritise workloads, meet deadlines and work in a fast-paced environment.
• Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail.
• Team player with a flexible and collaborative attitude.
• To have or be willing to obtain an enhanced DBS certificate.

Desirable

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a related field to TCFF’s work.

Proficiency in using Salesforce and Canva.
