Legal Casework Manager (Helpline)

Are you aware of the significant health inequalities that people with a learning disability face in the UK and levels of avoidable deaths? Are you passionate about access to justice for the families of people with a learning disability who have died avoidably in acute healthcare settings?

We’re looking for a dedicated Legal Casework Manager (Helpline) to join our committed information and advice team covering England at Mencap on a full time (37.5 hours per week) fixed term contract for 2 years.

Here at Mencap we are a leading charity providing advice, support and opportunities to people with a learning disability across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The role will lead on supporting families to get answers about how their loved ones died and change across the healthcare system to prevent future deaths. 

The role is flexible in terms of location, which can include home working, using Mencap’s office bases, such as in London and Peterborough, and will include some national travel, for example to inquest hearings or to meet families when needed. 

About the Role

As Legal Casework Manager (Helpline), you’ll provide advice, support, and casework assistance to families facing complex legal issues, specifically relating to people with a learning disability who have died in avoidable circumstances across England, mainly within the healthcare system. Working within a small, supportive team, you’ll manage your own caseload, contribute to the body of knowledge about avoidable deaths and help empower families to understand and exercise their rights and get answers through the inquest and other investigations processes. 

Key Responsibilities

· Provide clear, accurate, and timely legal advice and casework support for families.

· Work closely with clients, many of whom will be distressed, ensuring a sensitive, trauma informed and professional approach

· Maintain up-to-date case records and comply with quality and regulatory standards

· Support strategic litigation and advocacy efforts where appropriate

· Liaise with other charities, coroners, legal professionals, and agencies to support families to get answers

· Work towards a world where people with a learning disability are no more at risk of death in hospitals, than any other person

· Manage a team of caseworkers working across different areas of advice.

About You

We’re looking for someone:

· Legally qualified in the UK or similar jurisdiction with at least 3 years post qualification, working in either clinical negligence, inquests or inquiries. Or similar number of years working as a senior case worker in an inquest/clinical negligence/inquiries advice role.

· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a non-judgemental and empathetic approach

· Ability to manage a varied workload, prioritise effectively, and work independently

· Ability to travel effectively to support families at inquests, and to attend meetings

· A clear understanding of the importance of professional boundaries and in maintaining their emotional wellbeing in distressing situations

· Strong management skills and ability to supervise, coach and mentor colleagues. 

· Experience of accurately recording client case records and use of CRM/client database system

About the role

Sense has a fantastic opportunity for someone to join our Engagement team as our Campaigns Manager. This is a full time position working 37.5 hours per week. This role will a hybrid position working between home and our office in King's Cross, London, with a minimum of 2 office days a week.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead on the development and delivery of Sense campaigns, working alongside the Head of Media & Campaigns and Head of Policy, Public Affairs and Research.
• Decide on campaign priorities and make recommendations on the most appropriate course of actions to achieve Sense’s campaigning and influencing strategy.
• Ensure Sense has a consistent narrative and that disabled people and their families remain at the heart of our campaigns, that Sense is a sector leader in terms of campaigning, and that we are compliant with new charity regulations.
• Lead on the evaluation and reporting back of campaigns to the team and wider organisation.
• Provide leadership and expertise around campaigning strategy and management to senior management and trustees.

About the role

We’re looking for an experienced Marketing Manager to lead a team of two to deliver exceptional and effective brand and marketing activity.

You’ll be responsible for the development and delivery of brand and marketing campaigns for key programmes, projects and products, aligned to our organisational priorities.

You will collaborate with colleagues across the charity, external suppliers and children and young people with cancer - and their families - to use marketing and communications approaches to achieve business goals. • Develop and deliver audience and insight-led integrated marketing campaigns for key programmes, projects and products.
• Manage and develop the Brand and Marketing Communications Officers to deliver great work.

Wildlife and Countryside Link is a coalition of 90 environmental charities. We are looking for a Policy Officer to help develop, advocate and win policy improvements for nature.

The Government has promised to halt the decline of nature by 2030 and to net zero by 2050, committing to decarbonising our energy systems as a core government mission. Such commitments have been made within the backdrop of a challenging economic environment. The next few years will be critical in securing nature based solutions as part of the drive to reach net zero and in developing our understanding of and engagement with private investment for nature’s recovery as these fledging funding streams evolve.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated Policy Officer to convene environmental policy experts to agree bold shared policy positions. This role will focus on economic systems change, including innovative work on ways to drive private investment in nature; and on the role that nature must play in helping us to adapt to and mitigate the effects of climate change. There will be lots of thinking, lots of writing, and lots of opportunities to shape shared campaigns with excellent opportunities to engage with and work alongside some of the leading experts in these policy areas. You will also play a key role in delivering those messages to key influencers in Government and in Parliament.

Community Energy is gaining momentum nationally, where people are increasingly coming together to  take control of their own energy supplies.  Grand Union Community Energy (GUCE, pronounced “juice”) is looking to see local communities along the Grand Union canal in Hertfordshire enjoy a clean and resilient energy system that benefits all.  We develop, support and promote renewable energy and energy efficiency projects for communities from Watford to Tring, and build householder resilience by helping them reduce their bills and energy use.

We are seeking a Project Manager for two days a week, to help develop the opportunities that are forthcoming. Depending on the skills of the applicant the same individual could also cover aspects of other roles we are looking to fill.

About the role

This is an exciting opportunity for a person with experience in project management to join our small but expanding team. The Project Manager for Community Energy will be responsible for converting opportunities for local renewable energy generation and energy efficiency projects into reality. They will take projects from concept, through funding and construction to management.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Deliver new potential projects, such as opportunities with Watford industrial units:

  • Work with technical specialists to assess the energy needs of the community, including energy demand, infrastructure, and renewable energy potential (solar, wind, biomass, etc.).

  • Identify and engage stakeholders (local authorities, local organisations, energy providers, and residents).

• For new and existing projects: 

  • Develop and monitor an overall plan to realise projects including timelines, budgets, resources and risk management strategies in conjunction with the Development Officer / Project teams.

  • Manage share offers.

  • Communication with potential local investors.

  • Manage paperwork.

  • Ensure the projects are realised rather than remaining just good ideas.

  • Work with others to manage cross-functional teams, including installers, contractors, and local community leaders.

  • Coordinate with local authorities, regulatory bodies, and partners to ensure compliance with regulations and standards.

  • Foster a collaborative environment with all project team members.

  • Develop and manage project budgets, ensuring all costs are tracked, controlled, and aligned with available funding.

  • Work in partnership with the installer to oversee the procurement of materials, equipment, and services necessary for the project.

  • Track the progress of energy projects against objectives, milestones, and KPIs (key performance indicators).

  • Regularly report to stakeholders, funding agencies, and community members on project status and outcomes in collaboration with Project teams and Comms.

  • Ensure projects are delivered on time, within scope, and within budget.

In this role, the project manager serves as a bridge between technical experts, local communities, and other stakeholders, ensuring that energy solutions are not only sustainable and innovative but also beneficial and accessible to all involved.

Terms and Conditions

Salary: Pro-rated salary for 2 days per week, £13,000 to £19,000 per annum (£34,000 to £47,000 full time equivalent) depending on experience plus 3% pension contribution.

Hours: 2 days per week (15 hours). The working hours can be flexible.

Location: Home-working, ideally within the GUCE catchment area from Watford to Tring.

You will need to travel to meet stakeholders, attend relevant meetings and visit potential sites. You may be called upon to work outside office hours.

Contractual arrangements: 12 months fixed term with the opportunity to extend, subject to 3 months’ probation.

There is a notice period of four weeks from both sides.

Holidays: The equivalent of 28 days per annum excluding Bank Holidays, pro-rata for the part-time nature of the post.

Bank Support Workers have the ability to accept any shifts available on an ad-hoc basis across from all of Look Ahead's specialisms including Mental Health, Learning Disabilities, Homelessness and Young People. Bank Support Workers will provide support to customers to help them develop the life skills they require to meet the assessed needs of the customers of the service. They will work with customers to promote social inclusion and alongside other members of the team to promote independent living, encouraging customers to maximise their skills and choices. Within Learning Disability services, this will include providing physical, domestic, emotional and social care. Within Mental Health and Homelessness services they will enable vulnerable people living in a variety of different tenures to manage their tenancies/ licences and move towards greater independence within the community by providing a flexible and individually tailored support package. While carrying out activities, Bank Support Workers should deal with all customers, visitors and staff in a professional and appropriate manner and report to Look Ahead staff and management any observations relating to customers' welfare.

What you'll do:

Working proactively with other members of the team to handle the service caseload and administrative responsibilities
Building supportive, trusting relationships with customers
Conducting key work sessions that are innovative and engaging in order to achieve Support Plan goals
Ensuring ongoing assessment and management of risks associated with customers within an attitude of 'positive risk taking'
Proactively manage risk and safety both in and outside of their physical living environment
Support customers to undertake all domestic tasks wherever possible, including practical assistance where they have not yet developed the skills, to ensure customers enjoy a high quality of accommodation
Undertake all administrative work and keep accurate and comprehensive tenant/customer records to professional standards
Report any observations relating to customers welfare
Develop and maintain links with all key agencies and service providers in the local area to provide a range of engagement opportunities for customers in the community
Enable customers to make full use of community facilities by providing support as directed
Carry out support duties to enable customers to integrate into the community including e.g. accompanying the customer to attend benefit agency appointments and meetings, go shopping, to enquire at colleges about possible courses, to visit various public amenities
Empower customers to ensure they receive the service and benefits they are entitled to
Engage in learning and development activity to increase knowledge and skills
