Are you an experienced Data Engineer who wants to use your technical expertise to build data solutions that make a real difference?
Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity is looking for a Senior Data Engineer to lead the development of our cloud data platform. You'll help make sure teams across the charity have access to trusted, secure and reliable data—giving them the confidence to make better decisions for our supporters and fundraising.
This is a hands-on technical role with the opportunity to shape how our data capability evolves. You'll build and improve data pipelines and integrations, develop our data warehouse, solve complex problems and lead and support a Data Engineer.
Salary
The salary for this role is £62,000 per annum and we operate a hybrid working policy of a minimum of 2 days per week in the office.
In line with our EDI strategy and Total Reward policy, we calculate our salaries based on benchmarking data across the charity sector. To ensure fairness for existing staff and new joiners, we do not offer salaries above the advertised rate.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development and continuous improvement of our cloud data platform, ensuring it is reliable, secure and able to grow with the organisation.
- Design, build and optimise data pipelines, SQL data models and transformations that provide teams with high-quality, accessible data.
- Build and maintain integrations between CRM, fundraising, finance and other systems, ensuring data moves reliably and securely.
- Shape the technical roadmap for our data platform, balancing organisational needs with performance, resilience and cost.
- Set and maintain strong standards for data quality, security, governance and engineering best practice.
- Work with teams across the charity to understand their needs and turn them into practical, sustainable data solutions.
- Lead and develop a Data Engineer, sharing knowledge and creating clear, effective ways of working.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
- Strong experience designing, building and maintaining modern cloud-based data platforms and data pipelines.
- Advanced SQL skills, including experience with data modelling and transformation.
- Experience developing and optimising a SQL-based data warehouse. Experience with Snowflake would be particularly valuable.
- Experience integrating data between different systems using APIs, connectors or other integration approaches.
- Strong understanding of data quality, security, governance and the handling of sensitive data.
- Experience improving the performance, reliability and cost-effectiveness of cloud data platforms.
- Strong problem-solving skills, with a focus on automation, optimisation and continuous improvement.
- Experience providing technical guidance and supporting or managing other data professionals.
- Strong communication and stakeholder skills, with the ability to make technical concepts understandable to non-technical colleagues.

About the role
Working within the IT Operations team, our Senior IT Infrastructure Engineer's primarily support and assist with the professional delivery of Shelter’s servers and network infrastructure ensuring it remains reliable, secure and fit-for-purpose. The post holder will keep abreast of emerging IT technologies, make recommendations and implement resilience and feature enhancements, whilst maintaining a level of security appropriate to an organisation that handles sensitive data.
Role specifics
You’ll play a key role in ensuring Shelter’s IT infrastructure is secure, reliable and fit for the future. Working across a range of technologies, you’ll provide expert technical leadership, lead the delivery of infrastructure projects and improvements, resolve complex technical issues, and help maximise the value of Shelter’s investment in technology. You’ll work closely with colleagues across IT and the wider organisation to develop resilient, innovative solutions that support our strategic objectives while continuously improving our systems, services and ways of working.
About you
To succeed, you’ll need proven relevant experience that includes managing major updates and the replacement or commissioning of new services. You’ll also need to have worked deploying and troubleshooting Microsoft Azure hosted Windows and ideally Linux servers and Entra ID administration. An awareness and understanding of best working practice around information and technology security is important too, while it goes without saying that you have great problem-solving skills. Comfortable working both as part of team and independently, it’s anticipated that some tasks may fall outside of your prior experience, so you’ll also need to be keen to learn and develop. The ideal candidate should have practicable knowledge of WAN and LAN technologies including the configuration and troubleshooting of switches using GUI and Command line interfaces. Experience with liaising with third party network providers would also be desirable but not essential. We also require someone that is willing to travel on occasions when needed.
