Job description


PEN International is recruiting for an Archive Assistant to join the Archives team on a 7 month fixed-term contract. The successful candidate will play a vital role in assisting the PEN Centenary Archivist during a busy period.

The individual will be required to participate in the cataloguing of the PEN Centenary Archive Collection to international standards. The focus of the work will be on supporting the team in making the archives of PEN International and all PEN Centres available to the public, through a specifically designed website, by proof-reading and translating the description of items and uploading the documents online.  However, on occasion the Archive Assistant may be asked to carry out other tasks.

This is an excellent opportunity for individuals wishing to work in the heritage sector and explore a future carrier in archives in particular.

The ideal candidate should have:

  • Undergraduate degree in Archival Studies/ History.
  • Fluent spoken and written English.
  • Good reading and writing in French and/or Spanish.
  • Knowledge of international cataloguing standards.
  • Good ICT skills, in particular Excel.
  • Proven interest and knowledge of Archival Studies.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Team player as well as ability to work on their own initiative.
