Job description

Ada is a ground-breaking college and charity focused on using tech as a tool for social mobility and addressing the diversity and gender gaps in the tech sector.

We have fantastic corporate partners such as Salesforce, King Games, Deloitte, Bank of America and IBM and you would be responsible for these relationships as well as many others. Ada works with partners in a variety of ways from hiring apprentices to volunteering to donating and as Director of External Relations you would be responsible for these partnerships from prospect stage through to stewardship.

We’ve had great success with fundraising, business development and broader stakeholder engagement since opening in September 2016. We are now at an exciting stage of growth as we opened a second campus in 2019 and will open a Manchester campus in 2020. We need your skills and ideas to meet our income targets, manage an increasing portfolio of high-profile relationships and to raise the profile of the college.

We want to shout about the work we are doing and we want you to help us. Your communication skills, your commitment to our mission and your mindset will be vital in helping us grow and will give you the chance to fundamentally impact the diversity and access gaps in the tech sector.

As Director of External Relations you will be responsible for both the high level strategy, including working with the Executive Leadership Team to implement and update the College’s Strategic Plan and, with your team, the daily implementation of:

  • Ada’s fundraising activities including corporate philanthropy, major donors, trusts and foundations and implementing a wider individual giving programme.
  • Business development for our higher and degree level digital apprenticeships
  • Facilitating and managing the extensive volunteering by industry partners in Ada’s sixth form and apprenticeship programme
  • Raising the profile of the college including marketing and communications as well as public speaking and network building
  • Developing, managing and maintaining the College’s online presence including website development and management, PR, e-prospectuses, e-advertising, SEO/SEM, e-forums and similar channels
  • Ensuring the deployment of brand guidelines, including visual identity, imagery and key messages
  • Managing and developing all printed marketing and information materials and displays such as prospectuses, presentations, banners and publications
  • Initiating, leading and managing all market, customer and competitor research on behalf of the College, including developing appropriate feedback channels
  • Defining Ada’s alumni engagement and support strategy

The Director of External Relations also sits on Ada’s Executive Leadership Team and is part of the decision making and direction setting for the college as a whole

About You

Working with senior colleagues you will build on the solid partnerships and funding to date and grow our communications activities so that our public profile is worthy of the great things we are doing. Are you:

  • Experienced at building and maintaining strategic partnerships?
  • A great communicator?

  • A leader with a track record of nurturing high performing teams?

  • Define and implement a communications strategy that is integrated across all the distinct parts of the college including the Sixth Form recruitment needs, Apprenticeship recruitment and business development and our social missions.
  • Raise the profile of the College through thought leadership, events, positive press interventions and network building
  • Accountability for Ada’s external communications including social media, newsletters, press releases and website
  • Representing the College at events and meetings, cultivating speaking opportunities and supporting other members of staff and senior leadership to have public engagements

  • Overseeing and regularly re-evaluating internal and external events including stakeholder receptions, exhibitions, conference appearances and similar
  • Lead on the development of a strategy to build links with College alumni to secure publicity for and loyalty to the College

Volunteering

  • Work with the College’s academic teams to articulate and define volunteering opportunities to share with industry partners.
  • Manage the volunteering process so that all interaction between industry and learners is successfully tracked and safeguarding procedures maintained at all times
  • Working with the Assistant Principal, recruit one on one coaches from Industry partners and individuals for every Ada sixth form student annually.
  • Organise events bringing together Ada’s academic teams and industry to ensure our curriculum and teaching staff remain abreast of industry needs and trends
