Job description

Following series of strategic and organisational development meetings, St Werburghs Community Association is entering into a new exciting Business Plan period for 2021 - 2025*.

With 2020 challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, such as loss of trading income and increased demands on services, SWCA are looking for an experienced Development Manager to work with the Centre Director, the Team and Board of Trustees to increase increasing the organisation’s capacity, setting up collaboartions & partnerships and establishing a new membership model.

Summary of the role, responsibilities and personal duties

Established in 1971, St Werburghs Community Association aims to manage the Community Centre building, develop its services and ensure it meets the demands, and needs, of local people. In 1999 the Association took over the management of the Centre from the local authority and completed Asset Transfer and an over £1m Capital Project in 2010, which resulted in construction of a four-room eco-friendly annexe, doubling up on the lettable spaces and making the main Victorian building more energy efficient and fully accessible. The Centre is one of Bristol’s busiest, most loved and inclusive community buildings.

In the last 10 years the Centre has grown from strength to strength, developing the facilities, which now include six large multipurpose rooms available to hire on hourly basis, a catering kitchen, seven office spaces, an outdoor seating, growing and play area, an Open Access Computer lab, a café and a central Reception from which SWCA delivers a range of Signposting and Advice services.

Services we offer to meet community needs include weekly cooking and gardening courses, one-to-one computer support, employability support, Tai Chi for Older People, stay and play, food bank service, and much more. There are volunteering opportunities to build skills and promote inclusion, we support local people in taking actions on issues which matter to them and link people to the support they need enabling them to achieve their goals. We also run community events which support community cohesion and counteract isolation.

The Centre is available for private, social and business hire. As a membership organisation, we have around 200 active member groups who use the Centre for faith and cultural activities, training and education, exercise, dance and hobbies, as well as personal development. There are also voluntary and charitable sector members, who serve local people, across all equalities’ groups and multi-ethnic communities.

The Development Manager will support SWCA in implementing our strategy by building sustainable business-minded collaborations and partnerships with other stakeholders, organisations and groups, developing the Centre’s service provision in the following areas of benefit:

  • Digital Inclusion
  • Mental Health & Wellbeing
  • Economic Inclusion
  • Environmental Sustainability

Experience in enterprise, business set ups, and fundraising are key to this role. Plus excellent written and verbal communication skills; good knowledge of the community business and voluntary sectors and a sound understanding of the different protected groups, of social and community inclusion.

Specific responsibilities include:

  1. Identify potential partners and delivery contracts for establishing new, or expanding existing, services in line with the above identified priorities as set in our 4-year Business Plan. (by June 2022)
  2. Fundraising in liaison with the Centre Director and Finance & HR Manager to include writing and submitting bids, working to deadlines and in line with our fundraising strategy, in order to expand the services and following the agreed priorities. (ongoing)
  3. Complete a feasibility study for a new Individual Membership Scheme, maximising community engagement and generating additional donations income. (by December 2021).
  4. Conduct a Fundraising Audit of SWCA, across all channels (earned income, grants, donations, memberships, services, corporate) and develop a sustainable income generation strategy to support the agreed priorities and contracts over the following three years. (by March 2022)
  5. Identify and scope opportunities for Social Prescribing in Ashley ward, in conjunction with the new Dove Street Health Centre development and potential of forming an Ashley Alliance with other local organisations to meet the health and wellbeing needs of local residents. (by June 2022)
  6. Work with the Team on designing and launch of the new Individual Membership System linked directly to both donors, and service users, utilising digital tools and marketing strategies. (by June 2022).
  7. To work closely with the Finance & HR Manager on analysis of income streams and scenarios.

Person specification

Essential

Experience of business and strategic planning

Proven ability to engage, communicate with and work with trustees, staff and partners at all levels

Ability to evaluate and assess an organisation’s activities and performance and recommend detailed next steps

Proven track record of developing and writing successful funding bids

Knowledge of governance models, legal frameworks, and best practice in accountability and reporting

Proven competence in understanding financial information including the ability to read financial accounts and financial projections/ budgets

Proficiency with IT and computer-based information systems

Ability to work independently

Excellent analytical, written and verbal communication skills

Commitment to equal opportunities and ability to exercise this in practice

Sound understanding of the community business and voluntary based sectors

Understanding of membership organisations

Enthusiastic, proactive, with a ‘can do’ attitude

Desirable

Knowledge of governance models, legal frameworks, and best practice in accountability and reporting

Understanding of Social Prescribing
