We’re looking for trustees
I’m Nick, Chair of the Board of Trustees for We The Curious. We are looking for individuals to join us on the board who are passionate about creating a more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable future through science and creative experiences.
Since the temporary closure of our venue due to fire and water damage, we have been working hard to continue our mission with our 'out and about' activity as well as focussing on reimagining our strategic plan (Plan 2030) and governance.
We are now on the cusp of reopening our iconic Bristol venue, and as we do, you’ll have the opportunity to contribute to our strategy and help us create a place where everyone is included, curious and inspired by science.
We have newfound opportunities and challenges ahead and we need people with fresh perspectives and skills . As a trustee, you’ll share our values, be motivated, and have a positively questioning mind to help us realise our vision. You can find more about our history and who we are here.

What is a trustee?
Trustees have overall control of a charity and are responsible for making sure it’s doing what it was set up to do. They may be known by other titles, such as:
Directors, board members, governors, committee members
Whatever they are called, trustees are the people who work with our experienced leadership team to provide support, encouragement, challenge when needed and help to decide how the charity is run. Being a trustee means making decisions that will impact on people’s lives. Depending on what the charity does, you will be making a difference to your local community or to society as a whole.
Trustees use their skills and experience to support their charities, helping them achieve their aims. Trustees also often learn new skills during their time on the board.

What will you do in this role?
As a trustee you will provide advice, knowledge and support to the leadership team at We The Curious.
With the steer of the Chair, the board of trustees ensures we pursue our purpose responsibly, are compliant with our governing documents, charity law and other relevant legislation. The board will review and advise on best practice and appropriate policies and procedures and uphold excellent governance.
As a trustee you will:
_Contribute individual skills and knowledge in support of the vision and strategic delivery
_Uphold the values of We The Curious
_Safeguard and advocate for the work and vision of We The Curious
_Act as ambassadors locally, nationally and internationally
_Assist with the evaluation and review of the policies, goals and targets of the organisation
_Encourage investment and growth
_Drive innovation and change
_Oversee the effective and efficient administration of the organisation and long-term financial stability
_Contribute to working groups for specific focus on projects
All Trustees should use their specific skills, knowledge or experience to help the Board of Trustees reach informed decisions in the best interest of We The Curious.
This will involve scrutinising Board papers, leading discussion and providing guidance as requested by the Board on new initiatives or other issues relevant to the area of our work in which the trustee has expertise.
Time commitment
_We hold quarterly board meetings, typically from 4pm to 7pm and one strategy away day per year. Trustees are expected to attend and contribute to all meetings either in person or by joining virtually.
_ Board Meetings are located at the We The Curious offices within the science centre in central Bristol, and once a year at another location around the City.
_ You will also be asked to take part in one of our subcommittee meetings which take place online, at least once per quarter. There are currently sub-committees for Finance & Risk Assurance and Purpose Strategy.
_ You may also be called upon for advice or assistance by the leadership team or to attend occasional events.
Remuneration
This is a voluntary role. Reasonable travel expenses will be covered. Food is provided at the quarterly Board meetings and strategy away days.

Terms of appointment
_Trustees are appointed to an initial three-year term of service (including a 12-month probationary period).
_Trustees can serve a maximum of six years with a reappointment after the first term of three years unless the trustee holds an office, such as Chair or Deputy Chair, in which case they would be eligible for a further three-year term. The maximum term of office is nine years.
Probationary period
This post is subject to a 12-month probationary period.

I’ve never been a trustee before, should I apply?
Yes! If you feel you connect with these values or have some the skills/knowledge we are looking for, then we’d love to hear from you.
You just need to be at least 18 years old. You don’t need formal qualifications, or previous trustee experience or a science background or have reached any stage in your career. We’ll give you training on good governance and opportunities for mentorship. This opportunity would suit someone who is new to governance or hasn’t been a trustee before.

Supporting you
Training
If you join the board, you will have an induction and onboarding experience to support you with your role and get you connected with the rest of the organisation.
If you are a first-time trustee or want a refresher, we will provide you with training on good governance and other topics related to your role. We will also provide you with mentorship from other members of the board.

For over seventy years the Osteopathic Foundation (initially the Osteopathic Education Foundation) has been supporting osteopathic education, research, and development. We fund research and education activities through our grant-giving programmes. Since 2000, we have distributed over £1 million of support to advance osteopathic practice for public benefit.
We are seeking new Board members to sit on the Board of the Osteopathic Foundation. The Board meets quarterly online/in person to approve grants, monitor investment performance and report on activities. Please see the attached role specification for full details of the responsibilities.
We are looking for potential Board members with broad experience and a practical attitude. A proven track record in one or more of the following would also be helpful, especially in relation to charities: finances, business acumen, legal management, and/or fundraising. Osteopathic or medical experience is not a prerequisite for this role, but curiosity and self-awareness are.

Treasurer Role Description
About us
We are a global alliance of 47 local organisations in 38 countries, working on the front line with children and families in need. Our vision is a world in which children and families everywhere have access to the support they need to survive and thrive. Our mission is to make that happen through research, knowledge exchange, campaigning and humanitarian responses. We are registered as a charity under the Charity Commission for England and Wales and have two subsidiaries registered in New Zealand and in the US.

As local practitioners, we provide direct support every day to children and families in our communities, based on our frontline knowledge of what they need most. As an alliance, we use this local insight to inform research, practice exchange, campaigning and humanitarian responses. These lead to change nationally, regionally and globally. Through research, we gather and analyse evidence to discover and develop better ways to help children and families to live well. Through knowledge exchange, we maximise the reach of solutions that have been shown to work so they can be used to support even more children and families. About the role
We are looking for a Treasurer with experience of working with not for profits in setting strategic financial direction and it would be desirable if they have experience in complying with the regulations of the Charity Commission for England and Wales or similar regulatory bodies.
You would be joining our board at an exciting time, as we implement our new strategy, build on our campaigns and broaden our advocacy to mobilise greater support and achieve change. In line with this, we have built our model on realistic income forecasts, we plan to maintain the net unrestricted funds available, we are building restricted funding streams to fund our thematic priorities, we continue to align income and expenditure on 6 month, 12 month and 18 month time horizons and we carefully manage the commitment of our remaining surplus reserves.
Responsibilities of the Treasurer
In addition to the general responsibilities of a trustee (see below), the responsibility of the Treasurer is to maintain an overview of the organisation's affairs, ensuring its financial viability and that the organisation has policies and systems in place to ensure robust financial planning, implementation and reporting. For example, by taking a lead role on behalf of the board in:

Reviewing budgets, accounts and financial statements, and recommending them to the Board for approval

Being assured that the financial resources of the organisation meet its present and future needs

Ensuring that the charity has an appropriate reserves policy
-
Ensuring that appropriate accounting procedures and controls are in place

Ensuring that the charity has an appropriate investment policy
-
Ensuring that the accounts are prepared and disclosed in the form required by funders and the relevant statutory bodies

Ensuring that the accounts are scrutinised through external audits and internal reviews and that any recommendations are implemented
-
Keeping the Board informed about its financial duties and responsibilities

Making a formal presentation of the accounts at the General Meeting and drawing attention to important points in a coherent and easily understandable way

Chairing the Resource Mobilisation and Communications Committee (formerly the Finance and Human Resources Committee) and leading meetings three times a year

Ensuring that organisation has processes in place to meet any compliance requirements

All trustees need to have the following:

Understanding, or commitment to acquire an understanding, of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trustees of a UK charity. Acceptance of these duties, responsibilities and liabilities, and a commitment to operate within them.

Good, independent judgement and the ability to operate at a strategic level.

An ability and willingness to work as a part of a team and to support the staff team.

Understanding and empathy with Family for Every Child’s vision, mission, values and beliefs.
In addition to the trustee person specification, the Treasurer needs to have:

Financial and business experience at a senior management or director level
-
An understanding of the charity sector, for example an appreciation of the operations, accounting (including SORP) and legal framework in the UK

Experience in complying with the regulations of the Charity Commission for England and Wales or a similar regulatory body

Significant experience of financial management and strategy
-
Some experience of charity fundraising is desirable
-
The skills to analyse proposals and examine their financial consequences.
Desirable, but not essential requirements:

experience of working with or on a board
-
a qualified member of a recognised accountancy body

Experience of both local and international not for profits.
Time Commitment
This is a substantial and responsible role, and will suit someone able to commit about 18-20 hours three times a year. This includes about 18 hours a year for meetings (which are held on Zoom at a time which is most mutually convenient for attendees in different time zones), as well as time for reading and preparation.
Board and committee meetings are three times a year, and there may be ad hoc meetings between the regular meetings. If the Treasurer also sits on the board of a subsidiary entity, there are additional three board meetings. In addition, trustees are requested to provide support and guidance to the CEO and other Secretariat staff on an ongoing basis.
The initial term is a three-year period which can be reviewed by the Board..

Please note that this is an advisory role, with no remuneration. Expenses for travel, as
required, will be reimbursed by Family for Every Child in accordance with our policies.

- The Board of Trustees work with the Chief Executive at a strategic level to ensure the organisation is effective within its aims and objectives.
- The Board, made up of 6 Trustees, meet with the Chief Executive and Deputy Chief Executive, approximately every two months, to discuss the wider obligations and challenges of the specific sector in which we work
- The Board have a joint responsibility with the Chief Executive to ensure the charity complies with good practice and legal obligations.

As a collection tin volunteer, you will play a vital role in supporting us to raise our profile and fundraise within your community.
You will look after the Magpas Air Ambulance collection tins within a designated area, replacing full tins and returning them to an agreed location. You can also help us by finding new locations in which to place tins. These collection tins are an important part of how we raise money, raising approximately £20,000 per year.
As a collection tin volunteer, you will be expected to:
- Represent Magpas Air Ambulance in a respectful and friendly manner
- Understand the work of Magpas Air Ambulance, having basic knowledge and enthusiasm for our service
- Wear your Magpas Air Ambulance ID badge, ensuring it's visible at all times
- Travel to your collection tins (on two or four wheels). Where motorised vehicles are used, you must hold a full UK driving license, have a road-worthy vehicle with up-to-date road tax, MOT certificate (where applicable) and fully comprehensive insurance.
- Establish the regularity of required tin collections in your area, keep a log of your activities and feedback to the Supporter Care Officer
- Proactively replace full collection tins as needed and deliver them to an agreed location within one working day of collection
- Place new tins in locations within your area, ensuring they are accurately labelled with the location and organisation's name
- Inform the Supporter Care Officer of any new tins placed or any changes, helping us to ensure records are accurate and kept up to date
- Follow all Magpas Air Ambulance policies and procedures, including reporting any accidents and incidents
- Recognise, respond to, and report any safeguarding issues or concerns
