The post-holder will maintain a manageable caseload of clients needing support with their welfare rights and benefits. The role is to support the Welfare Rights Advice Project Team with the following:
- To carry out an initial client assessment, identifying any issues with their benefits and any claims they can make to maximise their income.
- Provide casework (including challenging decisions) for welfare benefits available to clients with mental health difficulties and their carers: i.e. Personal Independence Payments, Universal Credit, Employment and Support Allowance and Housing Benefit.
- Provide information and advice as appropriate about issues related to a client’s particular situation.
- Provide advice and casework for mobility and discretionary schemes and personal grants that could be of benefit to clients.
- Take referrals directly from service users, carers or staff from other agencies (encouraging use of our online referral form)
- Signpost and refer clients to agencies that assist with transition from hospital to community living, or to tackle social isolation and improve mental wellbeing.
- Maintain records in accordance with Hear Us policies and procedures, including the handling of confidential and private documents and keeping written and computer records up to date and secure.
- Liaise with GPs, CMHT’s and other agencies to obtain supporting documents, by telephone, letter and e-mail.
- Taking confidential telephone messages from clients and outside agencies.
- Take part in weekly WRAP team meetings regarding case allocation, and stay up to date with changes in benefits legislation.
- Attend regular supervision and yearly appraisals with line manager.
- Assist WRAP manager to write reports and evaluate the project for funding bids and to support and promote the project.
- Collect and distribute flyers and leaflets for signposting purposes.
- Attend Hear Us staff meetings, staff development days, and other Hear Us events (e.g. Hear Us Open Forum) where directed by line manager.
- Attend identified training and other personal development activities that will support you in this role.
- Develop and maintain healthy working practices for yourself, with clear personal and professional boundaries.

Merton Winter Night Shelter provides a much-needed emergency shelter for the homeless during the coldest winter months. We offer a warm, safe and respectful place, with a welcoming environment, providing hot food and professional support to those who would otherwise be on street. We are seeking a part time Project Assistant to work with the Project Coordinator, who leads the project on a permanent basis. Min 6hrs over 3 evenings per week and occasional management meetings outside of the shelter. This would be initially shadowing the Project Coordinator at the different shelter venues and then independently and unsupervised attending venues supporting venue convenors and their volunteers. The hours will include weekends and bank holidays.
Purpose of Job:
· Supporting the Project Coordinator in managing and coordinating the Night Shelter to ensure that all venues give a consistent service to all homeless persons accepted into the shelter, i.e., its guests.
· Standing in for the Project Coordinator in supporting shelter convenors and their volunteers on two evenings per week after initial induction.
· Assisting the Project Coordinator in providing advice and support to help each guest work through the challenges they are facing, recognising that homelessness is often a result of complex and multiple problems.
Responsibilities:
In close consultation with the Project Coordinator to:
· Liaise with the Host Venue Co-ordinators to ensure timely communication and information, particularly in maintaining the Shelter Log Book, to enable the smooth running of the shelter.
· Support guests who are using services for welfare, legal, debt, housing and other specialist issues, where necessary.
· Engage with vulnerable people in a sensitive, empathetic and professional manner.
· To assist in maintaining detailed case records ensuring all sensitive data is adequately protected and handled.

About Slough Foodbank
Slough Foodbank is a charity whose object is the prevention or relief of poverty in the United Kingdom, mainly in Slough and the surrounding area, in particular but not exclusively by providing emergency food supplies to individuals in need, as motivated by the principles of the Christian Faith.
Slough Foodbank believes that no one in the community should have to face going hungry. That’s why we provide three days’ worth of nutritionally balanced, emergency food and support to local people who are referred to us in crisis. In 2024, we gave out 12,147 food parcels. Sadly, this is almost double the number in given out in 2020. In addition to providing food and basic toiletries, we try to understand the situation of the people referred to us so that we can signpost them to other organisations where appropriate, in order to give a helping hand through a crisis.

· Primary contact for our parent organisation, Trussell
· Accountable to the Trustees, who have ultimate accountability for the Foodbank
· Volunteer and employee management
· Ensuring there are sufficient donations of food, toiletries, etc, and also financial donations
· Meeting clients’ needs through managing distribution of food parcels including oversight of the warehouse, distribution centres & signposting
· Recruiting and developing volunteers (and any approved employees)
· Building key external relationships with key referral agencies, local forums and networks
· PR & Communications – representing the foodbank externally, raising the profile of food poverty and lobbying for those in need
· Quality assurance & compliance
· Strategic leadership and process improvement

Job Description
Who we are
The Manna Society is an ecumenical Christian organisation and registered Charity. It runs the Manna Day Centre at 12 Melior Street, London, SE1 3QP, the largest day centre working with homeless & vulnerable people in the London Borough of Southwark.
What we do
The Manna Day Centre, a drop-in Centre for homeless and long-term unemployed single men and women, is run by a team of project workers under the Director, who are responsible for its smooth operation. Basic Services offered include food, showers, clothing, housing & welfare advice, medical care, and access to laptops. The Centre opens to the service users 7 days a week, 8.30 a.m. – 1.30 p.m.
The Advice & Welfare team functions centre around finding accommodation, welfare benefits, debt management, sustainment of tenancies and support in becoming “job-ready”. Clients may approach us with other issues, and it will be the Advice & Welfare team’s collective responsibility to decide whether the matter can be managed within the team or requires external input/expertise e.g. immigration issues and refer/signpost accordingly. The focus is on delivering practical solutions to client issues.
Our advice sessions run from 9.30 am to 1.30 pm. The sessions offer a mix of appointments and drop-in opportunities for existing users of the Advice & Welfare service and those who are new to the service
Working Hours
The working week for this particular post is Monday to Friday, 9.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. each day. Annual leave is 25 days plus time in lieu of bank holidays worked. The annual salary for this post ranges from £33,775 to to £41,359. The starting salary will be dependent on your experience.
Reporting
The Manna Society operates in a collegiate manner but ultimately the Director is responsible for all staff matters. The Manna Society is an Equal Opportunities employer. Responsibilities – Advice & Welfare Work
a) Lead and manage other members of the team through supervision, advice & welfare meetings etc in coming to agreement on implementation of policies and procedures tasks and pathways for client cases.
b) To manage a caseload of clients as agreed with the Director and the Advice & Welfare team representing/advocating for the client, as necessary
c) To help develop partnership and networking opportunities to expand our repertoire of providers in housing and other key areas
d) Keep up to date with appropriate legislation and policies. In doing so, attend relevant training to deliver “best advice” and make recommendations/research required training for other members of the Advice & Welfare team
e) Write reports and deliver statistics on your clients as required
f) Maintain confidential records and administrative systems including database, block grants and petty cash systems amongst others
g) Contribute newsletter articles on a quarterly basis
h) Attend team meetings of all staff as required
i) Ensure compliance with all society policies relating to Advice & Welfare and the centre
Responsibilities – Administration
As the senior worker in the team, you will be expected to assume responsibility/provide support in the following areas:
a) Providing statistical analysis and reporting as required by LB Southwark grant which supports the cost of running the Advice & Welfare team in part
b) Providing ad-hoc reports/case studies to support external grant applications on behalf of the society
c) Support the Safeguarding Lead (the Director) in producing the Safeguarding policy and associated materials, ensure that the Advice & Welfare Team have up to date Safeguarding and Prevent training
d) Manage all formal Subject Access requests in line with the Data Protection Act 2018 and support members of the team undertaking SARs on behalf of Advice & Welfare clients
e) Manage and disseminate all private rented property vacancies to the curated list of recipients on a daily basis
f) Assume responsibility for the database to maximise efficiency and ensure that all records are maintained to enable production of reports
g) Maintain all grant spreadsheets for accuracy and in readiness for annual accounts/audits
h) Be responsible for managing regular Advice & Welfare meetings and subsequent actions arising from those meetings
i) Prepare Advice and Welfare presentations for bi-monthly management committee and attend said meetings
These are the principal responsibilities. However, the Director may require staff members to undertake other duties, as and when circumstances dictate – for example, staff/volunteer shortages, holidays, special occasions, etc.
