Location: Home-based, UK nationwide however, occasional travel will be required as part of this role (may include team meetings or other work-related meetings)

Hours: Full-time, 35 hours per week

Salary: Circa £47,000 per annum (inner London weighting £3,950 per annum or outer London weighting £2,475 per annum may be applied in accordance to where you live)

The Role

The Research Grants Manager leads the design, delivery and governance of the Association’s research funding portfolio. The role ensures that all Association funded research schemes, including fellowships and project grants, are strategically configured, rigorously governed and effectively delivered in line with the Association’s Research Strategy.

The role will ensure that research funding schemes are aligned with external research developments and designed to maximise long-term impact. The role includes formal accountability for embedding high-quality, inclusive and structured lived experience participation within research funding processes.

The Research Grants Manager is the organisational lead for research funding operations, ensuring the Association maintains a sector-leading, transparent and strategically focused funding programme.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Lead the design and operational delivery of Association research funding, including fellowships and project grant schemes.
• Accountable for the governance of funding mechanisms, ensuring fairness, compliance with governance standards and integration within existing research management systems.
• Management of expert review and award decision processes, ensuring robust scientific assessment, transparent decision-making and strategic alignment with organisational priorities.
• Ensure consistent, high-quality and inclusive lived experience involvement within research funding processes.
• Provide authoritative insight about Association funded research to communications, fundraising, policy and service development colleagues to assist with media and fundraising opportunities.
• Contribute to effective financial planning and budget monitoring across all funding schemes, including forecasting, risk management and reporting.

About You

You will:

• Be educated to post graduate level in a science, health, social science or related discipline
• Have experience of research management in a life science setting, including management of research funding award cycles

About the Role

The Upper Room (TUR) supports individuals experiencing homelessness, poverty, social exclusion and involvement with the criminal justice system. Through UR4Meals and UR4Driving we provide practical support, dignity and opportunity to some of the most disadvantaged members of our community in West London. 

We are seeking an experienced Trusts and Grants Manager to take full ownership of and grow our most important income stream.

Trusts and foundations account for over half of our income, and we have an established portfolio of funders alongside several multi-year grants. This role is central to maintaining that income and driving its growth.

This is a hands-on, autonomous role requiring someone who can independently manage a live pipeline, write high-quality applications, and build strong, long-term funder relationships.

Trusts and Foundations Fundraising (lead responsibility)

• Identify, research and secure funding from trusts, foundations and statutory sources
• Develop high-quality, persuasive funding applications, including larger and multi-year bids
• Manage and maintain a robust pipeline of funding opportunities

• Build and steward long-term relationships with funders

Person Specification

Essential

• Direct experience securing funding from trusts and foundations; applications without this experience will not be considered
• Demonstrable track record of securing five-figure grants (and ideally multi-year funding)
• Experience managing the full funding cycle, from prospect research through to reporting and stewardship
• Experience managing a pipeline of multiple funders and deadlines
• Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to produce clear, compelling and tailored proposals
• Strong organisational skills and ability to work independently
• Confidence engaging with funders and representing an organisation externally

The Development Manager (Grants) leads on bid-writing and relationship building with grantmakers (Trusts/Foundations/Public). The candidate will be a key player in the Grants team alongside the Director of Development (Grants/Major Gifts) and Development Officer. Create has seen its fundraising increase significantly in recent years, as it fulfils its ambitious plans to double its reach by its 25th anniversary in 2028. The Grants team is responsible for securing over 50% of the charity’s income, managing an extensive portfolio of T/F/Public funders, approaching a well-researched pipeline of potential funders, and researching prospects. The successful candidate will share Create’s commitment to the transformative power of the creative arts within community settings, with exceptional written and verbal communication, research, organisational and IT skills, and meticulous attention to detail.

We are a Grant making Charity that helps individuals and dependants who are not able to work due to illness, injury and or infirmity. We help people across the industry, although, any applicant needs to have worked within the entertainment industry for at least seven years. In addition to our main fund we also offer emergency crisis grants and benefits advice and support. The Fund plays a leading role in Acting for Others, a charity made up of a network of theatrical charities aimed at fundraising to provide support to people in the profession who are experiencing difficulties.

We are a charity that also owns and manages a multi-tenant building in London, providing space to other charities, and businesses. As landlords, we’re responsible for the day-to-day running of the building, co-ordinating maintenance and looking after our service maintained offices on the 2nd floor.

The Royal Theatrical Fund is a Charity incorporated with a Royal Charter. The charity was established by Charles Dickens in 1839, a new Royal Charter with a wider remit was granted in 1974.

The anticipated split between the areas of work 70% grant applications, 20% office management, and 10% fund raising activities.

Duties and Key responsibilities:

• The role will be to co-ordinate the grant-making operations, working closely with the Grant Manager/Welfare Advisor in processing all Grants and collating all  relevant information for presentation at the Fund’s monthly Board meeting.
• Dealing with general enquiries for support and assisting people to apply, offering a friendly supportive ear to people who call.
• Entering Information on the database.
• Assisting in the management of the building, monitoring and ensuring all health & safety policies are followed, including managing cleaning and maintenance companies.

JOB FUNCTION: To lead the day-to-day delivery and development of the Foundation’s grant-making and charitable partnerships portfolio, acting as a key relationship owner for grantees and charity partners.
