Job description

About us 

The Physiological Society (‘The Society’), a registered charity, brings together over 4,000 members from over 60 countries. Since its foundation in 1876, our members have made significant contributions to our knowledge of biological systems and the treatment of disease. The Society promotes physiology and supports those working in the field by organising world-class scientific meetings, offering grants for research, collaboration and international travel, and by publishing the latest developments in its leading scientific journals. 

Job purpose and background 

The Society is recruiting for a new role as part of the Professional Development and Engagement team. The Professional Development and Grants Manager will support the delivery of The Society’s professional development programme, with an initial focus on introducing a refreshed grants programme. This role will form part of a small team that together is responsible for the growth of membership, with Professional Development being a key aspect. 

Applicants should have some experience of a grant-giving, research, research funding or scientific environment; the individual should have excellent communication and team working skills. The role will involve travel (primarily in the UK) to support the delivery of the Professional Development Programme. 

Main tasks and responsibilities 

  1. Delivery of a Professional Development Programme that supports and recognises the career progression of our members, in line with The Society’s strategic framework for Diversity and Inclusion; 

  2. Implementation of a new portfolio of impactful grants recently agreed by The Society’s Board, which supports members throughout their careers;
  3. Management of the grant-making cycle from grant set-up through to grant closure, ensuring compliance with internal procedures, with administrative responsibility for some schemes; 

  4. Ensuring that everyone involved in applying for funding has the best experience possible and that the grants database is effectively maintained in line with good governance; 

  5. Liaising with the Communications Team to proactively generate interest in the grants programme among potential applicants, showcasing case studies from awardees to raise the profile of the opportunities, 

  6. Working with the Professional Development Officer to develop an impact and evaluation process for grant schemes, through engagement with grant holders and effective use of data; 

  7. Ensuring the practical training opportunities offered by The Society are fit for purpose and meet the needs of the membership, supporting career progression within physiology research; 

  8. Developing the existing mentoring scheme to refine the aims and objectives, increasing impact for participants and outcomes for physiology; 

  9. Keeping abreast of changes within the wider education and professional development landscape, and identifying opportunities to enhance the professional development programme; 

  10. Managing the Professional Development Officer including ongoing performance management and undertaking performance appraisals; 

  11. Providing any additional support as required, ensuring that the Professional Development and Engagement team (and other areas of The Society) meet the strategic objectives of the organisation. 

Key attributes: 

  • A Life-Science degree or experience of working within the Life Sciences;

  • Experience of successfully managing staff; 

  • Demonstratable experience of managing projects and grants programmes including evaluation and learning; 

  • Enthusiastic, with a can-do attitude;

  • Excellent communication and inter-personal skills; 

  • Good administration and organisational skills; 

  • Ability to interact with grant holder constructively and effectively; 

  • Demonstratable knowledge of academic sector; 

  • Good research and analytical skills;

  • Ability to work confidently, using own initiative with a proactive problem-solving attitude; 

  • Resilient with the ability to respond flexibly to work priorities and requests; 

  • Willingness to travel in the UK and Ireland.
