Inclusion Scotland is a Disabled People’s Organisation, governed by a board which is made up of a majority of disabled people. This is a unique opportunity for a talented individual who has experience of operating at senior level and whose professional achievements and track record identify them as a leader who will be credible in the disabled people’s movement.

About the Roles

Our Research and Monitoring Unit plays an important part in supporting our vision by providing evidence on sustainable and active travel that ultimately influences and shapes policy, practice and behaviour across the UK.
We now have a fantastic opportunity to help us make a difference by joining our team as a Senior Evaluation Officer. We have two roles, one focussing on Infrastructure projects (working primarily with Sustrans colleagues and local authority partners on projects across Scotland) and one working on Behaviour Change projects (evaluating Sustrans work with schools, workplaces and communities).
Your role will see you supervising the delivery of a range of high profile monitoring, evaluation, analysis and research projects whilst providing support and direction to members of your team as a line manager.
About You
We are looking for excellent communicators and creative thinkers with the ability to manage and motivate people, getting the best out of others. You will use your exceptional analytical skills and draw on your previous experience of both project management and a wide range of qualitative and quantitative research methods to apply them to real world projects. So, if you have a track record of scoping, designing, budgeting and reporting on research and evaluation projects, this could be the role for you.

Job Purpose
Reporting directly to the Digital Technology Lead, the Java Engineer is responsible for designing, developing and maintaining the next iterations of our applications and platform.
Using technologies such as Java, REST API, Github and JUNITs to develop back-end services and microservices, the Java Engineer will be an active member of a cross-functional Scrum team whose role it is to keep deliver great features and value to current and existing fundraising supporters.

Main Accountabilities
The Java Engineer will have responsibility for building and maintaining high quality and maintainable code that is well performing, secure and follows all coding standards. Key duties will focus on:
- Building shippable software following Engineering standards in place
- Developing, building and maintaining all aspects of the platforms Java code
- Ensuring the code delivered is on time and is of the required quality
- Helping to maintain the high standard of the code by following TDD and BDD
- Reviewing code of other developers to ensure the overall code quality and to encourage a collaborative development environment
- Ensuring a globally robust and highly scalable approach to development to support our growing number of global users and services
- Working with other developers across the entire technology real estate
Person Profile
Experience
- Successful, hands-on experience working in a Java Development role
- Solid experience of developing online transactional applications
- Deep understanding of Java, JEE, servlets and Java frameworks (e.g., Spring, Hibernate)
- Experience in developing RESTful microservices using Java 1.8 or later
- Experience in integrating/consuming Web Services and Rest API’s within Java web applications
- Understanding of security standards and how to make sure they are met e.g. oAuth, PCI
- Understanding of code performance and how this can affect a websites overall loading
- Experience using distributed version control systems e.g. Github, Bitbucket
Abilities
- Ability to independently and proactively execute tasks with precision
- Ability to work with collaboratively with cross-functional and remote teams

Principal Policy Officer (Woodlands and Forestry)

This is an outstanding opportunity to ensure the UK’s woodlands and forests help tackle the nature and climate crises. You will lead the development and high-level advocacy of RSPB policy on forestry and woodland issues and influence important debates and decisions across the UK.
We are looking for a highly experienced policy advocate who understands and can influence the policies that drive both commercial forestry and the decisions by landowners to plant trees and manage woodlands of all kinds. You will provide thought leadership, already be well respected in this field and your advocacy, communication and campaigning skills will be second to none.
What’s the role about?
The UK’s woodlands and forests have a major role to play in helping to halt declines in nature and combat climate change. Significant woodland and forest expansion forms part of all land use scenarios for how the UK will achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
The RSPB supports the management and expansion of the UK’s woodlands and forests and seeks to influence the public policy, legislation and funding decisions, at UK and devolved level, that affect this. The Principal Policy Officer will have a UK remit and work with policy staff across the four UK countries, leading the development of our overarching policy positions, helping to develop and coordinate our advocacy strategies and ensure their effective implementation. The role will be responsible for undertaking high level advocacy on forestry and woodland policy and providing information, advice and support to other staff internally on forestry and woodland matters.
The postholder will need strong leadership skills and the ability to work with a wide range of policy staff across the UK and with colleagues in our Conservation Science, Communications and Campaigns and Operations teams to ensure we have impact.
Key aspects of the role include:
- Developing credible policy positions based on sound science and evidence
- Developing advocacy strategies that will achieve results
- Undertaking high level advocacy and communicating persuasively
- Coalition campaigning and communications
- Building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders at senior level
- Helping to plan and coordinate work across different teams and disciplines to ensure we influence policy decisions in each of the four UK countries.
What we need from you?
- You will be an experienced policy advocate, recognised as a thought leader in your field, and with substantive knowledge of forestry and woodland policy and practice in the UK or wider.
- You will be able to lead and coordinate work with others to develop policy positions, produce advocacy strategies and implement them and have influence externally at a senior level.
- You will be able to analyse complex issues in a fast-paced environment
- You will have well-developed negotiating and influencing skills and be able to engage with a wide range of individuals and organisations
- You will understand how public institution decision-making occurs and have good political instincts
- You will have written and verbal communication skills of a very high standard; professional and persuasive
- You will have an excellent understanding of the role of public facing communications/campaigns in supporting policy advocacy.
- You will be confident and capable of being a public face for RSPB policy and advocacy to the media and through the use of social media.
- You will be an expert in woodland and forestry policy in the UK or wider, with relevant academic or professional qualifications
- You will bring with you an extensive network of contacts and relationships in government, agencies, business and NGOs, relevant to the forestry and woodland sectors.
