The COO will translate BLiM's mission and strategy and ensure its well-run, properly resourced, with its ambitious day-to-day delivery. You will free the CEO to focus on strategic leadership and external influence by owning operations, people management, financial oversight and internal systems.

The COO will be a senior leader who shapes organisational culture, makes operational decisions, manages complex stakeholder relationships and drives the performance of a passionate, high-commitment team. You will be the person the organisation looks to when it needs clarity, stability and momentum.

The COO joins at a moment of leadership transition following the departure of BLiM's co-founder and Director of Operations.

Person Specification 

Essential

• Significant experience in a senior operational leadership role, ideally as a COO, Head of Operations or Director of Operations in a charity, social enterprise or purpose-driven organisation.

• Demonstrable track record of building and improving operational infrastructure: systems, processes, policies and ways of working that make organisations more effective and resilient.

• Proven people management experience, including line management of senior staff, performance development, recruitment and team culture-building.

• Strong financial literacy, including experience of budget management, grant compliance, financial reporting and working with a board finance function.

• Experience of leading or supporting governance processes, including board reporting, risk management and compliance.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate complex operational information into clear, accessible reports and presentations for senior stakeholders.

• A genuine, demonstrable commitment to racial equity and an understanding of the specific systemic barriers faced by Black professionals, artists and communities.

• The emotional intelligence and interpersonal skill to lead with care, build trust quickly and navigate complex relationships under pressure.

Desirable

• Experience of working in or with the music industry, creative industries or arts and culture sector.

• Familiarity with Arts Council England funding frameworks, charity law and the regulatory environment for non-profit organisations.

• Experience of implementing or managing a CRM system, project management platform or other operational technology.

• Knowledge of equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) frameworks and how to embed inclusive practice into operational systems and culture.

• Experience of leading an organisation through a period of significant change, transition or growth.

About the role

Reporting in to the Head of Communications, the Media and Public Relations Lead, will direct and lead the media relations strategy for Christian Aid to garner media coverage that is on brand and consistent with Christian Aid influencing, communications and fundraising goals.

The post-holder will lead the strategic planning and oversight of Christian Aid’s media and public relations strategy, raising the profile of the organisation among influencers in politics, public life and the Church, as well as Christian Aid supporters, motivating them to give, act and pray. 

Some of the main areas of responsibility for the Media and Public Relations Lead include:

• Manage the team to generate high profile media coverage and to create messaging that positions Christian Aid as a credible and influential organisation. 
• Deliver and shape the strategic planning and oversight of Christian Aid’s media and public engagement strategy, raising the profile of the organisation among influencers in politics, public life and the Church, as well as supporters, motivating them to give, act and pray, driving meaningful change.
• Collaborate with fundraising, advocacy and programme colleagues to deliver profile-raising media and public engagement activity, particularly during key moments such as Christian Aid Week and humanitarian emergencies and appeals.

Job Purpose

The Group Head of Marketing and Communications is a strategic leadership role responsible for shaping and delivering an excellent quality, high impact approach to integrated marketing, brand and communications across the TLC Group.

The postholder will primarily set direction and enable the team to deliver their work, with some direct input into campaigns, messaging and other outputs.

Wider Support

The postholder will be supported by the Director of Development as their line manager, and beyond that the Development sub-committee of our TLC Group Board alongside the wider Board itself. 

There will be scope to shape and grow the internal team if / when the TLC Group continues to expand. Beyond the direct team, TLC Group uses a network of freelancers and agencies and there is potentially scope to draw in their expertise, budget permitting. 

Key responsibilities

Strategic leadership

• Provide outstanding leadership and direction for the TLC Group Marketing and Communications team, bringing energy and drive to our ambition.
• Develop and lead the implementation of a TLC Group-wide Marketing and Communications strategy aligned with organisational goals. 
• Lead on positioning the organisation as a sector leader, enhancing visibility, influence and impact. 
• Advise the Executive Leadership Team on marketing, communications and reputational risk. Plan and mitigate against brand and organisational reputational risk and manage crisis communications effectively. 

Brand and Communications

• Lead the development and ongoing delivery of brand marketing strategies for each of our differentiated brands, supporting the transition to an audience led approach. 
• Lead the implementation and embedding of our new brand portfolio across our organisation including successful application of brand identities, values, key messages and tone of voice. 
• Identify opportunities to increase brand awareness and lead the delivery of these across a national footprint. 
• Set the strategic direction for all internal and external communications, including our Press and PR work.
• Ensure our messaging reflects organisational values, mission and impact. 

Income Generation and Commercial Integration

• Support the growth of our Charity by providing Marketing expertise and developing marketing plans which facilitate our partnerships and charitable income generation work (fundraising, philanthropy and grants). Work closely with our Development and Partnerships teams to deliver this. 
• Support the Group's commercial subsidiaries by providing Marketing expertise and developing marketing plans which assist the subsidiaries to meet their revenue targets. Work closely with our Group Commercial Director to deliver this. 

Influencing 

• Support our Policy team (part of our Development team) developing TLC's government relations work through influencing campaigns, parliamentary events and policy responses. 

Digital and Innovation

• Drive digital changes and innovative solutions to improve customer journeys, supporter retention and AI integrations/automations, helping to futureproof our growing organisation. 

Leadership and Management

• Lead the team to deliver across brands, through effective project management and prioritisation as well as ensuring alignment of stakeholder expectations against agreed objectives. 
• Develop our high-performing marketing and communications team and build connections which embed marketing and communications across the entire Group.
• Establish a network of strategic relationships with key stakeholders across team and subsidiaries to support a one team approach, integrated planning and effective delivery.
• Set the Departmental budget with a focus on value for money. 

Stakeholder Engagement

• Build strong relationships with key stakeholders, partners, media and influencers.

What success looks like

In the first six months, we would expect this role to build a strong understanding of the Group structure and priorities, while starting to bring greater clarity and alignment across the brand portfolio and marketing approach. There is a real opportunity here to shape direction early, deliver some quick wins, and build momentum across the organisation.

By twelve to eighteen months, the expectation would be to see clear, measurable impact in areas such as audience growth, income generation and brand visibility, alongside a more defined and embedded marketing function that is set up to support both the charity and commercial aims of the Group.

WHO WE ARE  

The 999 Club is a small charity doing big things with local people facing homelessness. For over 30 years we’ve been in the heart of Deptford providing warm welcomes and wraparound services ensuring those who need us are given the best chance of leaving homelessness behind for good.  

Our Gateway Drop-In Centre offers nutritious meals, laundry and medical facilities, showers, IT access, phone charging , a safe space to rest and a dedicated Women’s Sanctuary.  

When members feel ready, our team of expert staff are on hand to support them into suitable accommodation where possible, secure income via paid work or benefits, and provide immigration signposting for those who need it. Once housed, our Move+ programme continues to work with them to ensure they settle into new accommodation with the knowledge, skills, community and hope required to thrive in their new life.  

We also run The Bridge, a free six-week evening mental health course open to anyone in the community experiencing mental distress. The programme provides a practical toolkit to support long-term mental wellbeing.  

JOB OVERVIEW AND OBJECTIVES 

This role will play a vital role in advancing 999 Club’s ambitious plans to enhance its status, reputation, and support among both existing and wider audiences. At this pivotal moment in the charity’s history, the postholder will work closely with the Head of Fundraising and Communications and the Members’ Committee to co-develop and implement a bold new communications and marketing strategy. 

Building on a recent organisational rebrand, this role will ensure that the voices of those with lived experience remain central to the organisation’s messaging and identity. A key focus will be strengthening internal and external communication, uniting our diverse membership—which includes staff, clients, volunteers, trustees, and supporters—while also reaching new audiences through social media, direct marketing, PR, and media outreach. 

A major priority will be the relaunch and expansion of the 999 Club’s Membership Scheme and Champions Programme, designed to deepen awareness and support for 999 Club across Southeast London and beyond. Underpinning these efforts, the postholder will manage the Donorfy CRM database and ensure the ongoing maintenance and development of our WordPress website. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES  

• Manage 999 Club’s social media across all major platforms, creating engaging content that amplifies member voices and resonates with wider audiences. 

• Identify and sensitively share compelling stories that inspire support, avoid clichés and reinforce 999 Club’s themes of positivity, progress, and hope. 

• Produce dynamic newsletter content that strengthen reader engagement and drives action. 

• Work with the Head of Fundraising and Communications to ensure that all design and communications align with 999 Club’s brand style, visual identity, and tone of voice. 

• Handle press enquiries and proactively promote 999 Club’s work across media channels. 

• Grow our Patrons Programme so that it reflects 999 Club’s unique and diverse character and supports strategic growth. 

• Develop and relaunch our Membership Scheme, securing partnerships with local businesses in Lewisham and Greenwich to boost visibility and support. 

• Maintain and manage the Donorfy database, ensuring accurate donor records, reporting, and updates. 

• Produce regular reports, data and analytics on social media and website activity to inform strategy.

We’re looking for an ambitious fundraiser to join our Philanthropy team, capitalising on recent growth and with the chance to really make your mark. Your role is to engage influential and high-profile individuals and Trusts in the UK, connecting them to the difference they can make to thousands of men facing prostate cancer. You’ll lead on our established high value giving club, ‘The Pioneers’, and be creative with developing and growing membership and income for this product.

Providing the highest level of stewardship, you’ll ensure existing and new supporters feel valued, inspiring them to make five and six figure gifts, which will significantly improve the lives of men facing prostate cancer and their families. You’ll also harness the support of our enthusiastic and influential Trustees, Senior Volunteers and Leadership Team, involving them when appropriate.

What we want from you

You’ll bring strong experience within a philanthropy fundraising environment, including a solid understanding of solicitation stages and effective engagement techniques. You’ll have a proven track record of securing five-figure gifts and ideally experience working with major donors and/or trusts, with the credibility and confidence to build lasting relationships with high-net-worth individuals, trustees and senior stakeholders.

A natural collaborator, you’ll combine a strong team ethic with the flexibility and drive needed to achieve ambitious targets. You’ll be an excellent communicator, with the influencing and negotiation skills to engage a wide range of internal and external stakeholders at all levels.

Highly organised and comfortable managing competing priorities, you’ll be able to balance the stewardship of existing supporters with the cultivation of new prospects. You’ll be comfortable working both strategically and in detail, from shaping individual engagement plans to supporting the growth of giving clubs or membership schemes as a key driver of future income and impact so we can save more men’s lives.

How and where we work

Colleagues attend the office at least four days per month (pro rata for part-time colleagues) to collaborate, build relationships, and support projects and decision-making. You can choose where to work the rest of the time. Travel to the office is a commute, so we pay our own travel costs.

Additional in-person attendance will be required during your first few months for induction and training, to support you to learn the role and get to know colleagues.
