Ascension Community Trust (ACT) is a much-loved community-based charity in Custom House, Newham.  We deliver a range of projects including Newham District Foodbank (a Trussell Trust foodbank run by ACT and two community partners), welfare benefits advice, immigration advice, ESOL classes, work with adults with learning difficulties, as well as work with children, young people and their families.

This an exciting time for the programme with a SEND school being built next door to our centre, and with established relationships with several care homes – we expect that this programme will go from strength to strength.

You will lead all aspects of charity financial and resource management for two separate but closely connected charities, the Army Cadet Charitable Trust UK (ACCT UK) and the Combined Cadet Force Association (CCFA), which are supported by a single head office team. Location: Woking / Hybrid (on-site presence ideally 3 times per week)

Salary: £53,000–£55,000 DOE per annum (pro rata if part-time)

About the Role

Reporting directly to the CEO, the Head of Finance and Resources plays a pivotal leadership role across the organisation. You’ll be responsible for strategic financial management, operational support functions, and leading a small finance and business support team. You’ll also sit on the Senior Leadership Team, contributing to organisational planning, compliance, and resource management.

Key responsibilities include:

· Overseeing budgeting, forecasting, and financial performance tracking

· Producing insightful analysis and reporting for leadership and trustees

· Managing bank reconciliations and monthly management accounts

· Ensuring compliance with statutory and regulatory frameworks (Charity Commission, HMRC, Companies House)

· Maintaining accountability for restricted funding streams and service-level finances

· Leading financial input into bids, tenders, and strategic planning

· Overseeing payroll, pensions, contracts, suppliers, and insurance

· Supporting office management, property, and operational infrastructure

Who We’re Looking For

We’re on the lookout for someone who is both technically confident and people-oriented—a leader who understands that finance is a partner in transformation, not just a function of compliance.

You will be:

· A qualified accountant (ICAEW, ACCA, or equivalent)

· Experienced in senior finance roles, ideally in the charity or non-profit sector

· Proficient in Xero and advanced Excel

· Approachable and collaborative, with the ability to influence and support teams across the organisation

· Hands-on when needed, with strong attention to detail and a proactive mindset

· Comfortable balancing strategic oversight with day-to-day management

· Committed to working in a mission-led, values-driven environment

Role - The primary focus of the role is to provide good quality information and advice to VCSE organisations based in Redcar & Cleveland that will support their development needs, including (but not limited to) key areas such as governance, funding, marketing etc. The post holder will have a key role in the development, delivery and evaluation of the Enhance service training offer.

Background (Summary)

Enhance is the newly funded VCSE infrastructure support service in Redcar and Cleveland made possible through the collaboration of a number of funders to fill a gap in local provision. 

Lloyds Bank Foundation, Rank Foundation, Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, Tees Foundation and the Woodsmith Foundation have provided three years of funding and commissioned MVDA to develop and deliver a VCSE infrastructure service (Enhance) in Redcar and Cleveland.

Enhance will provide practical support to VCSE organisations based in the Redcar and Cleveland area who deliver services to local people and communities. 

The service model for Enhance is based on three key areas:

Improvement – Providing practical support through an information and advice service.  This will include for example advice on governance, funding, policy and practice

Growth - The development and delivery of a comprehensive training programme for all VCSEs in Redcar and Cleveland

Influence - Work to support the building and development of relationships; collaborative work across the VCSE sector and cross-sector partnerships

The service will be based in Redcar and Cleveland and will provide an outreach service in the more rural areas of the borough to ensure the services are accessible to all local VCSEs.
