CONTEXT OF THIS ROLE:
At Purposeful, communications is political. It is how we amplify girls’ voices, sharpen feminist narratives, and push back against regressive agendas. The Communications Director will sit at the heart of this work - shaping and delivering a bold communications strategy aligned with Purposeful’s vision, mission, and growth.
This role leads the stewardship of Purposeful’s voice, visual identity, and storytelling practice, ensuring that everything we produce - whether op-eds, reports, campaigns, or digital content - carries our politics with clarity and conviction. The Communications Director will work closely with the Co-CEOs and across all Purposeful teams, including Advocacy, grant-making, Learning & Insights, Programmes, and Resource Mobilisation, to amplify girls’ organising, showcase our impact, and influence the broader philanthropic and activist ecosystem.
This is both a strategic and hands-on role, requiring a deep commitment to feminist movements, an instinct for storytelling as political practice, and a proven track record of positioning organisations on the global stage.
SCOPE OF WORK
1. Communications Strategy & Leadership

Lead on delivery and implementation of a new communications strategy, building on 2025 planning foundations.

Work closely with the Co-CEOs and director team to horizon scan and adapt strategy in response to organisational vision and external landscape.

Provide leadership to a small team of staff and consultants (designers, digital specialists, artists) and work collaboratively with partner communications leads on joint campaigns and initiatives.

Meticulously manage and forecast the communications and editorial budget, ensuring value for money and strong planning.

Track and analyse content performance, using insights to refine reach and engagement.
2. Storytelling & Content Development

Oversee the creation of compelling storytelling content that highlights Purposeful’s impact, amplifies girls’ and young feminists’ voices, and influences funders.

Lead editorial planning and content workflows, balancing evergreen storytelling with crisis-response or time-sensitive outputs.

Oversee production and capture of content from live and digital events (webinars, IG Lives, panels, etc.).

Coordinate brand refresh projects, including a website refresh, and strengthen Purposeful’s digital visibility with a focus on graphic-led content across social platforms.
3. Writing & Editorial Oversight

Review and edit all external content to ensure quality, editorial standard, and alignment with Purposeful’s voice and values.

Write op-eds, blogs, social media posts, campaign messaging, press materials, and executive summaries.

Collaborate with colleagues in Learning & Insights to integrate data into storytelling and publications.

Edit and manage the production of publications and reports, commissioning artists and graphic designers as needed.

Provide editorial oversight for media projects, including radio, film, and animation.
4. Media Engagement & Positioning

Cultivate strong relationships with international, regional, and local media outlets.

Proactively position Purposeful in global and regional conversations, ensuring girls’ and feminist movements’ voices are at the centre.

Lead on preparing and supporting spokespersons, including Co-CEOs and external partners, for media engagement.

Main duties and responsibilities
1. Key areas
- Lead on, develop and implement internal and external communication strategies that align with the union's overall goals
- Create and oversee communication materials such as the creation of promotional and informative materials, digital campaigns, print materials, social media, audio and video

About the role
We’re looking for a creative and confident Content & Communications Coordinator to join our busy Digital and Marketing team at Imperial College Union. This role will be key in strengthening our online presence and improving student engagement with the Union. The successful candidate will manage our social media channels and content to drive two-way conversations, to increase awareness of the Union’s work, and help us better understand what they care about.
You will be our in-house journalist; planning and delivering content that speaks to our varied audiences. You’ll build strong relationships across the Union and College, writing creative copy and curating innovative social media content. Using your in-depth knowledge of social media, you will be aware of emerging trends across all platforms and create content that attracts and retains the interest and attention of our members. You will work closely with colleagues across the Union, including our elected Officer Trustees, to support them to reach more students and deliver key messages. This role is integral to supporting the diverse work the Union does.
Our ideal candidate will have a flair for creative writing for a variety of topics and channels, with a strong passion for social media and help develop and embed the Union’s personality and brand. What you would be doing
Content Planning
- To assist in the creation of communications and content plans to support the marketing team in the delivery of key Union marketing activity, such as Welcome Week and election.
- Populate the social media calendars to ensure regular, timely and impactful content across these channels on Instagram, TikTok and Threads.
- Build networks with student groups, the Union’s newspaper (Felix) and external partners to develop opportunities for content collaboration
- Utilise student feedback and engagement with Union content to continue to improve and develop our output and channels
- Work with the Officer Trustees to promote their public profiles and provide support on their campaigns.
- Stay up to date with what’s happening across the Union, College, the city and wider student movement to stay current and spot positive PR opportunities and content.
Content Creation & Curation
- Ensure timely, relevant and engaging content for Union channels & platforms, including blogs, website, social media and news
- Write, proof and edit a variety of digital communications across the organisation, such as blogs and web content to ensure brand and tone of voice is consistent and correct
- Lead on the weekly student newsletter – composing and drafting the newsletter and sending it out to all students every week
- Attend student events to capture photos and videos content to use for marketing purposes and provide live social media coverage to a high standard

This role is perfect for skilled comms experts who can provide excellent supporter care and is best suited as an additional source of income (the majority of our team are freelancers and consultants). You must be able to begin moderation at 9 am (or earlier), wrap up by 9 pm and adhere to our sub-three-hour response time.
Our moderators must have a minimum of three years’ in-house, third-sector comms experience.
As a Social Media Moderator, you would be responsible for:

Becoming the voice of the cause you are representing, adhering to their brand guidelines and tone of voice at all times

Identifying, escalating and signposting any safeguarding issues

Managing your own time and work on own initiative

Working across a range of social media management tools

Responding/actioning to all comments and queries in under three hours

Our moderation takes place between 9 am and 9 pm, Monday-Sunday.
Different accounts will require varying levels of ‘active’ hours (defined as time spent taking action). You will split your active hours between 9am and 9pm. For example, for an account which requires three active hours, you might carry out your work in six, thirty minute instalments throughout the shift.
As you gain experience, you will be allocated multiple accounts which will enable you to increase your hours worked.
Whilst you need to be on hand to monitor your accounts during 9am-9pm, the role does allow for a great deal of personal flexibility.
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 3 years' professional comms experience, working with a large charity with an active social media following. They will understand the importance of building positive engagement and relationships with the public and be committed to act in the best interests of our charity partners.

The Order of St John ( is a global humanitarian organisation delivering first aid and community healthcare in more than 40 countries and territories worldwide. It is supported by an International Office based in London.
With a new global fundraising operation in place, and a refreshed international strategy for the future, St John International is looking to expand its team. The Internal Relationship Manager will be the go-to person for Trustees and will keep an overview of what is going on across the Order’s various governance bodies, so that the work flows smoothly. You will work closely with the External Relations Manager as they implement our regional development and deliver on our relationships with St John establishments internationally. Along with the Communications team you will work to share our resources internationally using our newly established intranet – the St John Resource Hub – ensuring content is up to date, relevant and seen, by our staff and volunteers on all continents.
You will have oversight of the office admin function, line managing the Operations and Digital Managers and working closely with the Finance Director when it comes to budgets. You will also be the main point of contact for our vibrant Women’s and Youth networks and the alumni from our Global Leadership Development Programme. You will also have an important role in making sure that St John International is a great place to work, with a focus on staff well-being as well as the policies to support an engaged and productive team.
This is a part-time position, initially 25 hour a week.
Responsibilities
- To support the Secretary General in providing strategic direction for the worldwide activities of the Order of St John.
- Acting as the focal point for the management of governance functions across the Order, setting timetables for meetings, agreeing agendas and writing minutes of key committees.
- Liaison with Great Officers (senior trustees) on travel plans to maintain a strategic approach to intervention and attendance at events across the network.
- Leading on internal business planning: working with colleagues to bring a strategic project management approach to the process, driving progress and reporting to Board of Trustees.
- Internal communications: working with all other teams to share relevant information with St John establishments internationally using the St John Resource Hub
- Directing and monitoring the output of the Order’s advisory committees: youth and women’s networks, acting as secretariat to the networks.
- Managing the International Office’s input to big set-piece events (Grand Council)
- Acting as line manager for the digital officer and office manager.
- Lead on recruitment and induction of new staff and trustees
Experience and skills (essential)
- Strong background in project management, coordination, and business planning
- Competence in budget management and financial planning.
- Problem-solving and positive approach, with experience of working across teams and breaking down barriers.
- Proven team working skills, ideally with experience of working with cross-cultural, geographically dispersed team.
- Ability to manage large amounts of information, prioritise effectively and produce concise and focussed advice to the Board.
- A proactive and creative approach to systems, policies and procedures, ready to lead change and to shape better ways of doing things.
- Excellent written and oral communication.
Experience and skills (desirable)
- Experience of the charitable sector, ideally in an international context
- Experience of operating at main board level, including building strong relationships with senior staff.
