Portland Press Limited – the wholly-owned subsidiary of the Biochemical Society – is seeking a Non-Executive Director to join its Board.
The current Board is a dynamic forum comprising a mix of Biochemical Society Trustees and specialist Non-Executive Directors.
This is a pivotal time for the organisation as it capitalises on links between Portland Press and the Society and continues to navigate open science and changes across the wider academic publishing landscape. Publishing is key to the research dissemination goals of the Group and vital to the financial viability of the Society.
We are looking for individuals who are excited about contributing to the Group’s endeavours over the coming three-year period. The successful candidates will have:
• Demonstrable recent experience in evolving scholarly publishing and content services to meet the changing needs of researchers across the globe.
• Deep knowledge of making business-model changes and sculpting/structuring new commercial offerings.
• Awareness of research-funder policy shifts, with ideas about how to navigate these changes.
In addition you should meet the eligibility requirements for company directors, be able to commit the time necessary to fulfil the duties of the role, and understand the associated legal responsibilities.
This role offers a remuneration package of £7,500 per annum and will require the quarterly review of reporting in line with attendance at four board meetings per year.
It is intended that interviews will take place by the end of June 2026. The role will commence from January 2027 onwards, with a preceding period of shadowing (from September 2026).

Purpose:

Content creation

Campaign support
- Coordinate the communications briefing process across the organisation to ensure requests are managed efficiently.
- Maintain content calendars and workflows to ensure activity remains on track and visible across the team.
- Support delivery of campaigns by coordinating assets with internal colleagues and external suppliers, including managing print and digital production with suppliers where required.
Other

This role will see you leading the setup and delivery of the Income Maximisation Service, establishing processes, pathways, and ways of working that can be tested and improved to ensure delivery in line with nationally agreed standards and best practice guidelines.
Reporting to our Head of Welfare BDMA (Benefits, Debt and Money Advice), key areas of responsibility will include:
- Co-ordinating the allocation of resources and planning of support activities within the Income Maximisation Service, ensuring person centred support is provided.
- Overseeing caseload allocation and monitoring referral volumes.
- Carrying our regular quality assurance and compliance checks, including staff observations, file reviews, checking the accuracy of advice given.
- Managing the Income Maximisation team including recruitment, induction, identifying training needs, ensuring appropriate training is undertaken and that relevant policies, practices and procedures are adhered to.
- Ensuring that individual cases are allocated and supported in an integrated way that best meets the beneficiaries’ needs.
- Keeping abreast of, and implementing, changes in social welfare law relevant to benefits and broader income maximisation.
- Liaising and working with local statutory bodies, national representatives, and other organisations as appropriate.
You will bring demonstrable experience of leading, managing and developing high performing Benefit or Income Maximisation teams across England and Wales and will have significant knowledge of the full range of welfare benefits available. You will have a solid understanding of statutory and discretionary support available to people from Central Government, Local Authorities, Energy companies and other advice charities and will be keen to utilise this experience to start and grow a new team in our national charity.
You will be contracted to your home address and will primarily work remotely from there, with occasional travel for regional and national staff and team meetings.

You will work to forge and sustain long-term, constructive partnerships with new and existing partners that help us grow funds and achieve our charitable goals. You will:
· quickly learn and be able to articulate well our campaigns and victim service and their evidence base, our funding need, and the actions that corporates can and should take to prioritise safe and green use of roads, through funding us and supporting our campaigns
· find and unlock access to senior leads within companies not already working with us (e.g., public affairs, communications and corporate social relationship teams) as well as taking up the reins of stewarding relationships with some of the companies already working with us
· listen and understand corporates’ priorities, understanding their budgets, potential to fundraise within their teams and networks, and their safety, sustainability, policy and pr priorities; and articulate what Brake does and our need for help
· forge, together, actionable joint plans that generate funds for Brake from a company, directly or through their supply chain / customers. You will achieve six figure funding targets, by generating five figure funds from new and existing partners
· Work alongside team members in public affairs, PR, and public engagement to understand our programmes of work in campaigns and seek the engagement of new and existing corporate supporters in those programmes, for example through participation and sponsorship
· Be responsible for developing your own pipeline of leads and accurately forecasting income you will fundraise from this pipeline and listing partnership activities that will be delivered
· Operate within Brake’s Ethical Partnership Policy and other policies, which enables us to sustain our charity values and work alongside corporations safely.
· Be a team player and able to step up to the plate and speak up for the charity, for example giving speeches or undertaking interviews on the charity’s behalf.
