The Role

What will I be doing?

You’ll be responsible for a range of activities, including:

• Designing, commissioning, and delivering the IOP’s public engagement strategy
• Reaching diverse public audiences across the UK and Ireland, strengthening public understanding and appreciation of physics through strategic, impactful, and inclusive engagement activities
• Leading a team to deliver high quality and high impact programmes and projects
• Leading fundraising to support the IOP's public engagement and public dialogue work

Projects you may work on include:

• Overseeing the IOP’s UK and Ireland public engagement and dialogue programme, ensuring activities align with societal challenges and/or physics themes (e.g., climate change, health)
• The IOP’s Limit Less initiative which aims to break down barriers that can put off young people from underrepresented backgrounds from pursuing physics
• Administering the IOP’s Public Engagement Grants Scheme (PEGS)

Who will I work with?

You’ll work closely with a range of colleagues and stakeholders, including:

• Multiple IOP teams, including EDI, policy and public affairs, communications and marketing, membership and national teams
• The IOP's Business Development Group to help shape the IOP's overall approach to fundraising

• Equipping members with the tools and resources to engage the public effectively through a member-led approach to public engagement
• Working in partnership with organisations in and beyond STEM

Ideally, we hope you’ll apply if you bring:

Essential:

• A track record of designing and delivering high quality and wide-reaching public engagement in partnership with other organisations and with a track record of reaching different public audiences (ideally within a membership organisation)
• Experience of managing high performing teams and collaborating with peers
• Experience with and in depth understanding of audience research and acting on it to ensure diversity of reach
• Experience of budgeting and performance management of programmes

Nice to have:

• Experience of identifying risks associated with projects and activities and implementing effective mitigation plans
• Skilled in overseeing multiple projects and ensuring quality assurance through evaluation and monitoring processes
• Experience in influencing decision-making at senior levels and providing strategic advice based on sound analysis and judgment
• Familiarity with cross-functional collaboration, fostering alignment across diverse teams and disciplines

How will I be working?

Role overview: 

This is a new and developing service focused on increasing accessibility to stalking support for underrepresented and marginalised communities across London.  The postholder will play a key role in designing, embedding, and delivering this community-based model, working closely with community groups, partners, and volunteers whilst holding a small caseload leading to building trusted pathways into service for communities that may face barriers to accessing traditional support. 

The role will oversee two key initiatives: 

1. Community First Responders:  Trained volunteers with lived and/or professional experience (including LGBTQ+ communities, racially minoritised groups, victims with disabilities, neurodivergent individuals, and those with other accessibility needs) who provide face-to-face stalking support and awareness across London. 

2. Community Champions: Staff/volunteers within third-party organisations within the London ecosystem of service providers who are trained to provide first-responder level support within their own communities. 

The role builds and manages networks of community champions and first responders while holding a reduced advocacy caseload.

Role overview: 

The purpose of this role is to manage the specialist elements of the London stalking support service, including the Community Engagement and Outreach ISA and the Court ISA functions. These are new areas of delivery for the Trust, and the postholder will play a key role in establishing and embedding these specialist services.

About the role

This role is part of the Content and Experience Design team and reports to the Senior Interaction Designer.  The role will work closely with product managers and product teams that are aligned with Shelter’s Strategic Priorities.

As an Interaction Designer, you will work out the best ways to enable users to engage and interact with Shelter. You will be responsible for creating inclusive, evidence-led and iterative design that meets user needs. To do this, you’ll need to think and design at scale, communicating design decisions clearly and collaborate effectively.

Role specifics

We’re looking for someone with experience designing inclusive and accessible digital products and services, who can test ideas, gather feedback and turn research insights into clear, actionable design decisions. You’ll have experience using and developing design components and patterns that meet user needs and accessibility standards, and in preparing well-documented design assets to support consistent implementation. You’ll be confident generating ideas and facilitating workshops or co-design activities, as well as creating wireframes and prototypes at the right level of detail using tools such as Miro and Figma. A collaborative approach is essential, with strong communication skills, the ability to act on feedback, and experience applying user-centred design principles within multi-disciplinary teams.

Reporting to our Chief People Officer you will lead transformative and ambitious ED&I and wellbeing initiatives across the organisation and build strong working relationships with key stakeholders, staff and artist networks and the wider arts sector. 

You will have worked at a senior level in other purpose-driven organisations and achieved success in partnership with multiple stakeholders. We’re looking for someone skilled in managing and delivering projects and who can use data and insights to make a real impact. You will also be a collaborative leader, with strong influencing skills, stakeholder management expertise and the ability to inspire and effect change. A genuine passion for creating a positive and inclusive culture to encourage all to thrive and reach their potential is essential.

Can you demonstrate any of the following: 

• Proven experience in leading and delivering ED&I and Wellbeing initiatives from inception, in a complex organisation.
• Evidence of continued professional development, particularly in relation to equality, diversity and inclusion expertise.
• Strong knowledge and understanding of ED&I principles, key legislation, ED&I professional networks, and best practices.
• Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving skills and experience in data analysis and reporting; including workforce, data governance/GDPR literacy, and Board level reporting.
• Passion for creating a positive and inclusive workplace using strategies to support belonging and psychological safety.
• Ability to handle sensitive situations with discretion and professionalism.
