Job Description

This role reports into the Director of Finance, People and Culture & Business Service and operates at the most senior levels within the organisation providing support and advice to the Group Directors, the CEO and the Finance Audit and Risk Committee.

The role will involve the following -

  • To deliver regular, timely and reliable group level reporting and analysis including the monthly group management accounts.
  • To deliver the annual report and accounts for the group and subsidiary entities.
  • To manage and coordinate the global annual statutory audit and support
  • Monitor and oversee all donor and project audits to gain the fullest possible picture of control weaknesses and risks across the organisation.
  • To coordinate and deliver the financial plans as part of annual strategic business planning process
  • Lead changes in financial management and accounting practices to support evolving information, control and compliance needs.
  • Work closely with the Head of International Finance and other stakeholders to develop, maintain and implement a global group finance manual, accounting policies and procedures
  • Understand and monitor key financial risks and ensure that appropriate mitigating actions are taken. To oversee fraud and financial mismanagement investigations.
  • Work closely with Internal Audit, to provide adequate assurance to Directors and Trustees as to the effective functioning of the global financial control environment.
  • Engage with operational financial managers across all Regional Country Offices (RCOs), particularly in the development of group policies and standards and in the management of audit and assurance processes
  • Liaising closely with UK fundraising teams, whilst supporting a more sophisticated funding model and fully integrated fundraising and programme operations.
  • Responsible for managing financial risks, developing financial policies, procedures and reporting that support strategic business needs
  • Introduce, develop and oversee a range of assigned organisational policies, e.g. expenses, financial crime.
  • Responsible for supporting, driving both organisational and strategic change across finance and the wider business
  • To manage and develop a high performing finance team of 9 within the UK

The Successful Applicant

The successful individual must be -

  • Fully Qualified Accountant within a minimum of 5 years PQE
  • Strong technical accountancy skills and a high degree of numeracy
  • Prior experience of driving organisational change successfully
  • Experience of working in a complex, multi-entity, multi-currency financial environment
  • Ability to think strategically and develop operational solutions to meet strategic needs.
  • Strong IT skills
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex concepts in straightforward ways and across language and cultural barriers.
  • Track record of managing successful teams and developing individuals
  • Expertise to organise, manage and deliver on complex and changeable priorities
  • Excellent stakeholder management experience with the ability to influence senior stakeholders positively and work to common agendas.
  • High levels of resilience and tenacity: proven ability to overcome obstacles.
  • Prior knowledge and experience of the International Development and / or Charity Sectors is desirable but not essential.
  • Passionate about Practical Action's vision, mission and values.
  • Ability to travel overseas occasionally
