Overall Purpose of the Head of Services
This new role reports to the Chief Executive and is a member of the charity’s Senior Leadership Team (SLT). The role reflects planned development and expansion in the charity’s direct service provision including the development of a permanent Helpline following a pilot project in 2025.
As a small national charity, the role combines hands on operational delivery and management with strategic leadership and vision for our Information services, Helpline, and other support services. You’ll lead a talented team of five direct reports (with plans to further expand) and will design, deliver, and evaluate services working closely with Guts UK teams and colleagues, and with external partners.
You’ll be responsible for services strategy and leadership oversight, budget oversight, safeguarding leadership, and services evaluation, ensuring our work is grounded in evidence, shaped by lived experience, and built for impact.
We’re looking to you to lead our strategic priority for improving information services and support including quality of life and quality of care for all those affected by digestive conditions and symptoms.

The Purpose of the Role
The External Relations (ER) department includes private fundraising, marketing & communications and advocacy. A Diocesan Finances Review was undertaken in 2025 which resulted in several key changes to financial flows between dioceses and the National Church Institutions. The purpose of this role is to design and implement the process changes, operational arrangements and governance necessary to support new ways of working for the NCIs and Dioceses.
The main change relates to the simplification of the administration of funding in relation to ordained ministry training. Dioceses will contribute to a single Ministry Training Fund which will meet the costs of ordained ministry training (fees, accommodation costs, maintenance and travel expenses), with administration carried out by the National Team, to provide a one-stop-shop for ordinands to understand entitlements, apply for grants and claim expenses. The post holder will be responsible for designing and implementing new technology-enabled processes and ways of working to support the efficient and effective operation of the Ministry Training Fund.
£10 million of funding was provided within the national Church of England's spending plans for 2026-28 to enable detailed analysis and planning to be undertaken (including pilot initiatives) focused on addressing structural overheads in the Church, and opportunities to reduce duplication and complexity. This role will enable appropriate governance processes in relation to the allocation and oversight of these monies.
The Spending plans also incorporate savings targets (£4 million + in 2026-28 and £20 million + by 2029-31) in some key areas relating to Bishops and Archbishops' ministry costs and National Church costs. This role will work with the relevant groups charged with delivering those savings, to ensure adequate oversight and monitoring, and report back to key governance bodies on a regular basis.

Location: Our office is a short walk from King’s Cross station in London. For this role, we need someone to come into the office at least one day a week, on a Tuesday. A day where all of Income Generation come into the office. Otherwise we are proud to promote a truly hybrid work culture. You can work remotely for the rest of the time. Equally, you may prefer to work from the office full-time.
