Whether your background is in gambling-specific treatment or in the wider addiction and recovery field, drug and alcohol services, mental health, or related social care, being a Gambling Support Practitioner is a strong fit for people with real experience supporting behaviour change.
You'll find plenty here that's familiar: full structured interventions using CBT and motivational interviewing, supporting people through assessment, formulation and recovery planning, as well as brief check-ins for clients further along in recovery, all delivered within GamCare's Model of Care. Sessions are delivered face to face, by phone and by video, alongside outreach and partnership work with local services and referral pathways. You'll manage this with your own professional judgement on complex cases, working within clear governance and safeguarding frameworks and backed by regular supervision, using the core skills you already have, applied in a new context and grounded in a proven, structured model.
About you
We're looking for someone with real experience delivering CBT-informed or motivational interventions, wherever that experience comes from. You'll be confident managing a caseload with genuine complexity and risk, comfortable using both low- and high-intensity interventions, and able to work within clear governance and safeguarding frameworks while using your own professional judgement. Experience specifically with gambling harm is welcome but not required, and many strong practitioners in this field have come from adjacent addiction or mental health backgrounds.
Working at GamCare
Founded in 1997, GamCare is one of the leading providers of information, advice and support for anyone affected by gambling harms. We operate the National Gambling Helpline, provide treatment for anyone who is harmed by gambling, create awareness about safer gambling and treatment, and encourage an effective approach to safer gambling within the gambling industry.
Our people tell us GamCare is a genuinely supportive place to work. We invest in training and development, and are committed to inclusion, welcoming applications from all backgrounds, including candidates with lived experience of gambling harm.
Staff Benefits we can offer you:
Closing date for applications: Sunday 23rd August 2026 (23:59).
Due to the anticipated volume of applications, we may conduct pre-assessment screening calls between 1st and 2nd September2026.
Interviews are expected to take place in person from 7 September 2026.
GamCare is committed to offering the best support to people affected by gambling harms, as such we welcome applications from candidates with lived experience.
GamCare is an equal opportunities employer and doesn’t discriminate based on race, religion, gender, age, sexuality, gender identification, or physical ability. Help shape the future of a globally recognised university as Durham builds towards its bicentenary and an ambitious fundraising campaign.
Location: Durham / Hybrid - At least two days on campus
Applications close: 9 a.m. Monday 24th August 2026.
Who we are
Durham University is one of the world's leading universities, combining academic excellence, a distinctive collegiate community and a global network of more than 200,000 alumni and supporters.
As we approach our bicentenary in 2032, philanthropy will help us widen opportunity, support world-leading research, enrich student experience and invest in projects that benefit future generations through an ambitious fundraising campaign. The campaign will build on almost 200 years of achievement and create new opportunities for students, researchers and communities.
The Development and Alumni Relations Office sits at the centre of this work, building lifelong relationships with supporters and securing philanthropic investment.
About the role
This is a pivotal appointment at an important moment in Durham's fundraising journey.
The Head of Principal Giving will focus on developing and securing transformational philanthropic support from some of the University's most significant donors and prospects. Working closely with the Chief Development Officer, senior academic leaders, Campaign Board members and influential volunteers, you will help shape the next phase of principal giving at Durham.
You will manage a carefully selected portfolio of high-potential relationships, leading conversations that result in seven- and eight-figure gifts. Alongside securing major commitments, you will help strengthen Durham's principal giving capability, build a sustainable pipeline of future support and contribute to the success of the bicentenary campaign.
The role also offers the opportunity to engage with philanthropists and global networks across key international markets, including North America and Asia, helping to unlock new opportunities for investment in Durham's future.
What we are looking for
We are interested in experienced fundraising professionals who have secured significant philanthropic support and enjoy building long-term relationships with donors, colleagues and partners. You may already lead a major or principal giving programme within a university, or bring experience from another setting where you have worked with major philanthropists, family foundations, trusts, corporates or high-profile supporters.
You will be comfortable operating at a senior level, building credibility with influential stakeholders and translating complex ideas into compelling opportunities for support. You will be collaborative, thoughtful and motivated by the impact philanthropy can have on people's lives. You will enjoy working across a large organisation and bringing people together around shared ambitions.
If you are excited by helping to shape Durham's future through transformational giving, we would love to hear from you.
