Job description

Paid, flexible tutoring in schools across Greater Manchester, West Yorkshire, Merseyside and Tees Valley. Help pupils affected by disadvantage catch up, working with small groups during the school day.

Proudly Northern, Tutor Trust is a not-for-profit charity transforming young lives through subsidised, high-quality tutoring. We champion educational equity, ensuring support reaches those who need it most, regardless of postcode or background. Specialising in impactful SATs and GCSE tutoring, we are now seeking dedicated and passionate tutors to be recruited from Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Tees Valley and West Yorkshire.

You will be working in schools in these regions during the school day.

This is a crucial, self-employed role where you can make a tangible difference in your local community, earning a minimum of £20 per hour. We offer a comprehensive training and development programme and provide the flexibility to fit tuition around your existing commitments. We actively encourage applications from individuals with varied experiences and perspectives, as we believe this diversity enriches our tutoring team and enables us to better support our pupils.

Duties

  • Provide personalised educational support to pupils.
  • Communicate effectively with young people and adapt to their individual learning needs.
  • Work with small groups of up to four pupils (with some larger groups of up to six).
  • Build meaningful relationships with pupils over a typical 15-hour assignment.
  • Recognise and respond to potential signs of abuse or neglect and follow all safeguarding policies and procedures.
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with pupils and promote a safe and secure learning environment.

Requirements

  • Experience & knowledge: You must have a genuine passion for education and a belief in educational equity. You need demonstrable skills and knowledge equivalent to a grade 6 at GCSE in English Language or maths (depending on the subject you want to tutor in). We can be flexible on formal qualifications and welcome applicants who have studied the subject at a higher level or have relevant work or volunteering experience. While not essential, it would be advantageous to have experience working with young people from a variety of backgrounds and an understanding of the systemic inequalities that impact educational outcomes. We welcome transferable skills from all backgrounds.
  • Experience working with young people from a variety of backgrounds is highly desirable, as is an understanding of the systemic inequalities that impact educational outcomes. We welcome transferable skills from all backgrounds.
  • Availability: You must be aged 18 or over and available for tutoring during the school day (Mon-Fri, 08:00-16:00), with the ability to travel to schools within your local area.
  • Safeguarding & checks: We are committed to safeguarding children. As a tutor, you will be in unsupervised contact with pupils, and this role is a regulated activity. All successful applicants must undergo a mandatory Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check with a check of the barred list. The successful candidate must, by the start of the position, have permission to register and work as a self-employed worker in the UK.

How to apply

Please apply on our website via the ‘For Tutors’ page and click on the city region vacancy that you wish to apply for.

We aim to create an inclusive recruitment process. If you require any reasonable adjustments to participate fully in the application or interview stages, please let us know.
