Job description

Cumberland Lodge - A place of history and vision

Cumberland Lodge is a beautiful Grade II listed house in Windsor Great Park that has been the home of an educational charity for almost 80 years. Steeped in the nation’s history, the Lodge is nestled in the middle of 5,000 acres of ancient royal parkland in the Berkshire countryside.

The foundation was the vision of the academic Amy Buller, whose pioneering work in trying to understand the rise of National Socialism in Germany during the 1930s and its impact on society — especially young people — was presented in her 1943 book Darknessover Germany. Her insights came to the attention of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (The Queen Mother), who shared her conviction that Britain needed a place of dialogue, understanding, and renewal. Cumberland Lodge was the result.

A living purpose

From this foundation, we continue to convene leaders, students, practitioners, policymakers, and changemakers for residential retreats, conferences, and workshops. These gatherings create the rare conditions for open, respectful debate, helping participants to exchange insights, challenge assumptions, and build understanding across divides.

The Communications and Engagement Manager will work closely with the CEO, Executive, Senior Management Team and Programme Team to:

  • Lead on the Lodge’s content and engagement work. Recruit and manage time limited senior strategy communications and media support for the 80th anniversary work in 2027.
  • Renew and reinvigorate the Communications & Engagement Strategy that supports the strategic objectives set across the organisation and monitor its effectiveness.
  • Create proactive content that positively showcases our work, including (but not limited to): news and articles, blogs, e-newsletters, and briefing documents.
  • Develop and update the website with content that is engaging, up-to-date and SEO-friendly, to communicate our work, outputs, and impact to our target audiences. Also support the Business Development and Marketing Manager in reviewing the venue hire section.
  • Drive forward our social media channels (LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube).
  • Produce and edit compelling videos and photography to share on our website and social media.
  • Work with the Business Development and Marketing Manager to review any promotional materials for the marketing of Cumberland Lodge as a venue and social enterprise.
  • Work proactively with the Programme Team to develop our impact reporting strategy, to include a bank of case studies and testimonials that can be used in print and online.
  • Support the Director of Partnerships with fundraising activities to increase awareness of, and engagement with, the work of Cumberland Lodge.
  • Ensure that all forms of communication are consistent with our brand, key messages and an appropriate tone of voice.
  • Manage the budget for communications, including subscriptions, resource costs, and advertising spend.
  • Deliver progress against KPIs and objectives, reporting monthly on these for the CEO, and quarterly for the Board of Trustees.
  • Manage and maintain good working relationships with partner organisations and external agencies.
  • Provide reactive support to the Executive Team when issues arise.
  • Carry out all such other activities as may from time to time be reasonably required

This job description is designed to help you in the understanding of your role and is not intended to be a definitive list of your duties as flexibility in meeting Charity and delegate needs is required by all employees.
