Job Title: Director of Examinations

The Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCOphth) is a membership organisation and the voice of the profession, with over 4,750 members in the UK and overseas. Our role is to champion the specialty, set standards of training and practice, and influence change to make a difference to the lives of patients with eye conditions.

Job Purpose 

The Director of Examinations plays an important role within the College, providing strategic leadership, oversight and delivery of our exam function in the UK and overseas, at the same time as ensuring alignment with best practice and GMC standards.

This role has responsibility for a budget of £2M+ and for the delivery of exams to around 3,000 candidates each year. The postholder is also responsible for leading a team of six members of staff and forms a key part of our Senior Leadership Team, taking corporate responsibility for the overall direction and operational management of the College.

Main responsibilities 

1. To oversee the strategic direction and delivery of exams 

• Provide strategic leadership for the College's examination function, ensuring all examinations are designed, delivered and continuously improved in accordance with the College's strategic objectives, regulatory requirements, obligations and recognised best practice 

• Develop and implement the long-term exams strategy, anticipating future developments in medical education, assessment, AI technology and regulation to identify opportunities, manage risks and ensure the continued relevance and sustainability of the College's examinations 

• Ensure the College's examinations meet the standards required by the General Medical Council (GMC) and other relevant regulatory bodies, maintaining robust governance, quality assurance and standard-setting processes that demonstrate examinations are valid, reliable and fit for purpose 

• Lead the strategic planning, financial management and performance of the examinations function, ensuring delivery within agreed budgets while maintaining high-quality services and identifying opportunities for innovation and operational efficiency 

• Champion an outstanding candidate and stakeholder experience by ensuring examinations are delivered to consistently high standards of customer service, accessibility, fairness and professionalism, with particular regard to equity, diversity and inclusion, confidentiality and information security 

• Provide executive leadership for the development, implementation and continuous improvement of policies, assessment methodologies and quality assurance frameworks, ensuring alignment with developments in medical assessment and educational best practice.

2. To foster close and constructive relationships with key stakeholders 

• Develop and maintain strategic relationships with examiners, psychometricians, clinical leaders, regulators and international delivery partners, fostering collaboration to ensure the consistent delivery, quality and integrity of the College's examinations across the UK and internationally 

• Provide strategic oversight of the recruitment, development and performance of the College's volunteer examiner workforce, ensuring examiners are appropriately trained, supported and calibrated to deliver assessments in accordance with regulatory requirements and recognised best practice 

• Serve as the executive lead for the College's Examinations Committee and its subcommittee structure, providing strategic advice, governance support and assurance to enable effective oversight of the examination function and its ongoing development 

• Lead the College's relationship with the GMC, acting as the principal point of engagement on examination matters. Ensure timely and robust regulatory reporting, represent the College in formal discussions, and provide assurance that examinations continue to meet all applicable regulatory standards 

• Build and maintain productive relationships with key UK stakeholders, including the Postgraduate Dean for Ophthalmology, the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges (AoMRC), NHS partners and other professional bodies, influencing developments in postgraduate medical assessment and promoting collaboration across the sector 

• Lead the College's engagement with international partners, including examination delivery organisations, host institutions and the College of Ophthalmology of Eastern, Central and Southern Africa (COESCA), supporting the strategic growth, quality assurance and sustainable development of the College's international examination portfolio 

• Represent the College externally on matters relating to examinations and assessment, acting as a trusted advisor to senior clinical leaders, regulators and partner organisations, and enhancing the College's reputation as a leader in postgraduate medical assessment. 

3. To lead the directorate

We have an exciting opportunity to join a successful team as Regular Giving Officer (Acquisition and Retention) on a full-time, open-ended basis to oversee and manage the regular giving programme.

Imperial’s regular giving programme looks after donors who give up to £50,000 a year.

About you

Working within the communications and marketing team, you'll be confident in managing our social media accounts (we have many), ensuring we're using platforms to get our messages out to both wide and targeted audiences with engaging and timely content.

You'll be happy using tools for social listening, interacting with our audiences and building our reach. You'll be familiar with key metrics for social engagement and will be reporting back to colleagues and other stakeholders - and using this data to constantly improve our communications.

You'll be skilled in writing longer form content for our members' magazine, Caring, proof reading articles, posting content on our websites, creating graphics and making sure our content is engaging, audience focused and dynamic. Oh, and you probably know your way around an emoji set and are not scared of a well timed pun. Plus you'll have a great eye for detail and be confident in your ability to prioritise (and sometimes reprioritise) your workload as needed.

We're a small but effective communications team and pride ourselves on getting stuck in and supporting each other when we need to deliver big on fast moving projects, so you'll need be able to juggle lots of demands while recognising the importance of always hitting deadlines.

The Purpose of the Role

The Programme Finance Manager leads financial management for the IRC UK RAI programme, acting as the programme team’s day-to-day finance partner — embedding financial thinking into programme decisions rather than just reporting on them after the fact. The postholder drives high-quality financial processes across the full programme cycle — from contract reviews and budget proposals through to financial planning, reforecasting, reporting, performance monitoring, risk management and compliance.

The postholder line manages the Programme Finance Officer and is responsible for building the capacity of the wider programme team on finance processes. They bring curiosity and enthusiasm for exploring how AI tools can improve the quality, efficiency and accessibility of financial management in day-to-day work.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Strategy, Planning and Finance Business Partnering (30%)

• Contribute to the IRC UK RAI annual planning cycle, working alongside the Director of Programmes UK to develop financially sound programme strategies and multi-year budget frameworks.

• Provide strategic financial insight and analysis to inform programme decisions, including scenario modelling, cost-benefit analysis and funding gap assessments.

• Act as a trusted finance partner to programme leads, translating financial data into clear, actionable insight and embedding finance into programme design, delivery and decision-making from the outset.

• Develop multi-year financial models and funding scenarios to support the sustainability, growth and diversification of the RAI UK portfolio.

Budget Monitoring and Planning (25%)

• Lead on the preparation of project budgets to support timely, accurate and complete proposals to donors, ensuring compliance with all donor guidelines.

• Coordinate with IRC’s global headquarters on updating and maintaining the operating budget and reforecasts.

• Prepare budget guidelines and scenario plans to assist programme managers in formulating budgets and spending plans.

• Provide programme and senior management staff with monthly Budget vs Actual reports for all grants, contracts and unrestricted funds; identify risks and mitigation measures.

Grants and Contracts (20%)

• Lead on Grant Opening, Review and Closure Meetings to ensure sound financial management throughout the grant cycle.

• Review funding opportunities to assess financial risk and viability; advise programme leadership on whether to pursue or decline opportunities.

• Support programme design to ensure financial viability and adherence to contract terms.

• Analyse reporting terms, provide timely advice and ensure conditions are met throughout the grant or contract period.

Accounting, Risk, Audit and Internal Controls (10%)

• Maintain and enforce internal financial controls across the RAI UK programme, always ensuring adherence to IRC UK policies and donor regulations.

• Identify and implement improvements to financial controls and risk management processes on an ongoing basis.

• Prepare and maintain a programme-level financial risk register; identify, escalate and actively manage financial risks in close collaboration with programme and senior management teams.

• Lead on audit readiness, ensuring that all financial documentation is complete, accurate and appropriately filed in advance of internal and external audits.

• Act as the primary finance contact for any donor or statutory audits, coordinating responses and providing supporting documentation as required.

• Maintain the integrity of IRC accounts through timely reviews, correction journals and reconciliations, with appropriate supporting documentation.

Senior Legacy Marketing Manager (UK and International)

As our Senior Legacy Marketing Manager (UK and International), you’ll lead the strategic development and delivery of Compassion in World Farming’s legacy marketing programme across the UK and internationally. This is a vital role within our Global Fundraising team, helping to shape a sector leading legacy strategy that inspires supporters to leave a lasting gift for farm animals and the planet.

A bit about us:

WellChild, based in Cheltenham, is the national charity for seriously ill children and their families. Through a range of practical and emotional support, training and information programmes, WellChild gives children and young people with complex medical needs the best chance to thrive at home.

Purpose of the Role:

The garden makeover (Helping Hands) team provides practical support to families by enlisting the help of corporate volunteer teams from companies across the UK to undertake one-off improvement projects to create safe, accessible sensory gardens for children and young people with complex health needs.

There are six key parts to this role:

1) Meeting with our beneficiary families to identify the needs for their outside space. Using empathy and active listening to ensure you can gather all the relevant information for a successful transformation.

2) Project design and procurement of materials to deliver a suitable space, that not only meets the beneficiaries needs, but is also delivered within our time and budget specifications.

3) Compile all relevant project documentation and engage with the allocated team of corporate volunteers.

4) Deliver your design over two days (which may include overnight stays depending on project location) with an enthusiastic but often unskilled group of corporate volunteers. You will need to inspire and empower these teams in all elements of the delivery of your project and be the subject matter expert as the sole representative on site from WellChild.

5) Complete post makeover administration on our equipment and communication with the corporate volunteers.

6) Management of each makeover’s financial budgets, for equipment, materials, travel, accommodation as well as a joint monthly tool and equipment budget.

Fairly regularly to complete these garden makeovers, there is a degree of working away from home. For example, you might work on a five-week rotation consisting of two weeks conducting one makeover, over two days, each week. This is predominantly over the Spring and Summer seasons. The remaining time is utilised to undertake site visits and plan for upcoming projects with a hybrid home/office balance. Garden makeovers are completed nationwide so long and frequent travel can be required, and to compensate for this we offer a flexible TOIL policy. Over the Winter months, the role is more office based, with review of risk assessments, and planning of Spring projects. Some project preparation may be required at our store in Innsworth.

You will be able to:

• Demonstrate professional/practical DIY skills including hard landscaping to very tight deadlines
• Provide Inspiration, tutoring and leadership to the groups of volunteers to empower them in using new skills.
• Confidently build relationships quickly in order to communicate effectively, appropriately and clearly with a wide range of people.
