About the role 


As Crisis’ Senior Media Officer, you will play a key role in delivering stand-out media campaigns that inspire the public and politicians to join our fight to end homelessness by raising awareness of our influencing campaigns and fundraising events. You will help to build Crisis’ profile by bringing to life our work, demonstrating how we end people’s homelessness for good through education, training and support with housing, employment, and health.  

Your role will be creative and varied. You’ll work with our frontline staff to identify people facing homelessness who want to share their story and empower them to do so. You’ll help create hard-hitting news stories that engage our audiences and raise awareness of some of Crisis’ biggest organisational campaigns including our annual Christmas appeal. You will also help make the most of reactive opportunities that come through to our press office and help build relationships with key journalists.  

About you 

Due to an promotion in the team there is an opportunity to join our News and Media team for up to 10-month on a fixed term contract. This time period will cover the general election and Crisis’ flagship Christmas appeal, it will be an exciting role at a busy time.

The Senior Media Officer will lead the team’s work on major legislation before the election, including the Criminal Justice Bill. They will support campaign work around the election, lead on media outreach around Crisis’ retail operations and manage the crucial media day for Crisis at Christmas.

We are looking for someone who is on top of the news and can build relationships with journalists across the media spectrum. The Senior Media Officer will design and implement media strategies that help guide the public narrative around homelessness and ultimately help create significant policy and social change.

The Senior Media Officer will line manage a Media Officer, overseeing their work and personal development. The Senior Media Officer will also play a full part in a busy reactive press office, setting up national level interviews and liaising with senior producers.

To be successful in this role you will have: 

  • Experience of working within a busy press office environment/ PR agency or as a journalist   

  • Proven experience of leading on high-profile audience focused media strategies or pitching stories which secure coverage across news, consumer, online and regional media. 

  • Proven experience of managing and maintaining good relationships with internal and external stakeholders including journalists at all levels.   

  • Excellent writing skills with the ability to draft copy for a range of audiences, including political, consumer, tabloid, trade and everything in between. 

  • Excellent news sense, with a strong working knowledge of the UK media and ability to develop relationships with key media contacts.   

  • Experience of working with case studies, identifying, and preparing them for speaking to the media and empowering people to share their experiences.
