Role description and purpose

The post-holder will be responsible for the successful leadership and management of CPA’s portfolio of programmes in line with the strategic direction set by the Council and Trustees. Reporting directly to the CEO, the post-holder will be a key member of the senior management team, leading the Programme/Project Management team and working with the Finance Manager, Communications Lead, Research Lead, Advisors and other key staff to develop and deliver CPA programmes across the Commonwealth and beyond. This will include strategic planning, project and team management, development of workplans and budgets, provision of leadership, good governance and oversight of all programme-related activities. This role will be responsible for engaging and working with external agencies, subject matter experts, and all relevant stakeholders to ensure the on-budget delivery of high-quality outputs across CPA’s portfolio of programmes. The post holder will also be required to work with other Leads and key staff across the organisation to scope and develop relationships with potential funders and support the creation of funding proposals for future programmes and workstreams, integrating their delivery into the overall programmes portfolio.

Key duties and responsibilities

Leadership and operational planning, management and oversight

• Collaborate with the Board, CEO and key staff to develop and advance the organisational strategic plan and goals and ensure programme areas align with strategic plan.

• Implement the strategic plan, integrating all aspects of the organisation’s work into programmes, including policy, advocacy, communications, product development, research and evaluation.

• Work with the CEO and senior management team, creating, maintaining, and/or overseeing systems and processes to ensure effective management of the daily operations of the programmes team and an organisational structure that supports the organisation’s goals.

Programme planning and management

• Oversee and lead the development and delivery of high-quality programmes, services and resources in line with users’ needs and the wider global health landscape, taking into consideration other relevant internal and external programmes, services and resources already available or under development.

• Lead and direct the appropriate use of programme resources including staffing and finances, ensuring programmes are delivered to budget in accordance to agreed KPIs and outcomes.

• Manage grant life cycles, from request to close. This entails supporting the writing of/reviewing applications, overseeing budgets, reviewing or producing relevant reports, and monitoring impact.

• Deepen existing relationships with donors, agencies, and stakeholders to enhance programme sustainability, engaging with key stakeholders to understand their needs and align programme offerings accordingly.

• Working with other key staff, and in alignment with the strategic priorities of the charity, support the identification and development of new partnerships and funding opportunities to expand the programme portfolio.

Human resources planning and management

• Leading the programmes team, including direct line management responsibility, regular one-to-ones, team meetings, pastoral support and appraisals.

• Determine human resource requirements for the management and delivery of programmes, services and resources; recruit, select and appoint appropriate staff according to need and funding availability.

• Ensure adherence to human resources policies, procedures and practices including the development of job descriptions for all staff.

• Establish and maintain good staff relationships and morale, ensuring a healthy and safe work environment in accordance with all appropriate legislation and regulations.

• Identify and develop systems to support staff development and identify opportunities for staff development where possible.

Cross-team working and collaboration

• Work collaboratively with colleagues to ensure that programmes, services and resources are effectively communicated/disseminated and evaluated.

• Use available data and information for evidence-based decision making, to continuously develop and improve programmes, services and resources.

External relationships, strategic partnerships and collaboration

• Advocate for and communicate the organisation’s vision, objectives, core programmes, services and resources to all relevant stakeholders, building strong partnerships that further the organisation’s profile and reputation.

• Attend and report at core organisational meetings, and relevant internal and external conferences and events, raising the profile of the CPA and gathering strategic insights relevant to the organisation’s programmes and wider vision and mission.

Essential .

• Significant programme leadership experience within the international development/global health context.

• Experience of working in a not-for-profit organisation/NGO.

• 5 years plus programme management experience, including development and implementation of governance processes, financial and risk management.

• Excellent organisational and planning skills with the ability to devise, plan and execute work plans to budget within strict timelines to deliver objectives.

• Proven business development skills, with evidence of successful funding awards and/or product development in a growing organisation.

Your new role

About the role:

The Head of Centre Operations is responsible for delivering the Trust’s strategic aims through a team of over ninety employees, as well as a significant number of volunteers across the organisations five rescue and re-homing centres and remote supporter groups.

This is a critical senior role in the organisation, reporting to the CEO. The role is responsible for managing the organisation’s programmes across 3 locations in Sub Saharan Africa and South East Asia, managing 10 personnel. The position provides leadership on community-led investigations and evidence gathering and works closely with the Senior Management Team (SMT) on critical areas including fundraising and strategic development.

The Talent Set is delighted to be working in partnership with Mary's Meals UK as they recruit for this exciting new Head of Philanthropy & Partnerships role, established with investment in the Major Giving and Partnerships team due to the significant growth and success they have achieved in recent years. 

As Head of Philanthropy & Partnerships you will focus on major donor, mid value and corporate fundraising. You will lead the team to develop new and existing relationships with individuals/partners who are able to contribute significant funds to the organisation, while working closely with the Head of Institutional Giving & Partnerships to identify audience crossover and maximise the potential of high value fundraising opportunities. 

This role will lead the team in fostering a relationship-led approach to fundraising, strategising for major donor and corporate fundraising whilst remaining operationally hands on and networking/influencing to establish new connections and opportunities for the organisation. As part of the Extended Leadership Team (ELT), you will also feed into organisational strategy and leadership, ensuring all work is delivered in line with Mary's Meals values. 

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead the development and implementation of the philanthropic and corporate fundraising strategies, working alongside the Head of Institutional Giving & Partnerships to develop an overarching departmental strategy that allows for close collaboration;
• Proactively identify new prospects/supporters, securing mid/major donor support and corporate income in line with team income targets;
• Foster a culture of relationship-led fundraising, focused on stewardship and retention of existing donors that allows for long-term, increasing levels of support;
• Provide strategic leadership to the Philanthropy & Partnerships Team (4), supporting professional development and a culture of learning/collaboration.

• Demonstrable expertise of relationship-led fundraising, personally securing major donor and/or corporate partnerships, with a focus on high value, long term support;
• Proactive approach, actively building networks and engaging new prospects through a variety of channels;
• Focused on supporter journeys and ensuring exceptional stewardship to drive engagement and income;

Head of Property
Canterbury, Kent
£50,242 - £57,778 pa plus excellent benefits
35 hours per week

The Head of Property is a crucial and pivotal role at the Diocese, as you will lead the strategic management of the Diocese’s assets, taking responsibility for maximising income and capital returns from assets, including property development on investment land and buildings.

Reporting to the Diocesan Secretary, you will oversee the management of the Diocese’s housing and the Glebe estate. You will ensure good quality clergy accommodation through strategic maintenance and planned enhancements, along with the sale, purchase and development of housing stock and glebe land as required.

You will also work alongside others to oversee the management of the programme of improvement works to DBF property and land holdings, in relation to the Diocese’s Net Zero Carbon Action Plan, including engagement with national and regional bodies.

Managing the Property Services Team, which oversees the management of all clergy and other housing within the Diocese, you will ensure maintenance and improvements are performed within agreed timeframes and budgets and provide an excellent and friendly service to clergy and their household. In addition, you will ensure maximised rental income from vacant housing and glebe land which is a key income stream for the Diocese.

As Head of Property, you will offer support to parishes and protect their interests by advising on decision making regarding their buildings, with a particular focus on enhancing utilisation and value, especially for church halls. You will also represent, protect and advance the interests of PCCs, Incumbents and Churchwardens, by partnering with them to provide high-level advice to parishes on the effective management of property matters, particularly in cases where the Diocese acts as custodian trustee on their behalf.

As a key member of the Diocesan Office and Senior Management Team (SMT), Diocesan Finance & Assets Committee, and Property Advisory Group, you will manage the property budget, taking part in budget reviews and budget setting in partnership with the Director of Finance and Finance & Assets Committee.

MRICS qualified and with experience of working in the property sector, ideally as a surveyor or with experience in asset management, residential property management and landlord and tenant relations, you should have demonstrable experience of procuring and supervising contractors in the delivery of property related projects and services.

With proven leadership experience, including strategic property development and resource planning, you should have a knowledge of driving maximum return from property and/or land assets, including experience of property disposals and purchases.

An understanding of Property Law is essential, and you should also be experienced in planning, managing and reviewing substantial budgets and exercising strict financial controls in a property environment.

Sympathetic to the overall Christian mission of the Church of England, including the Diocese’s schools, church communities and buildings, you should be prepared and able to travel regularly throughout the Diocese.

Previous experience within Charities or Not-for-Profit organisations is desirable but not essential.

The Housing and Land assets of the Diocese of Canterbury comprises operational and investment properties, almost all of which consist of ministry housing stock and a small amount of Glebe Land. Assets include circa 170 parsonage houses, the majority of which are occupied by clergy, establishing a unique relationship between the Diocese and church leaders. A minority of the stock (around 50 properties) which are intended for ministry but not currently used, generate substantial rental income. Notably, recent years have seen the move to ensure that we have the right properties in the right places for ministry as well as exploring development opportunities on existing properties that are due to be reviewed, sold or replaced.
