About the Role

As a critical member of the strategic leadership team (SLT) for Emmaus UK, the Director of Partnerships and Federation Development will take lead responsibility for ensuring the provision of high-quality support, advice, capacity building and grant-making for federation members in the UK.

The postholder will play a key role in the development of national strategic partnerships and will collaborate with federation members to ensure that federation strategic priorities are delivered and that our colleagues across the federation are able to do their very best work supporting people to overcome homelessness and poverty.

The role will also ensure effective programme and project management of directorate projects and work to embed cross-directorate working and co-operation.

We're a democratic, membership organisation and all students at the University of Creative Arts are automatically members of the Union. Overall legal responsibility for the Students' Union rests with our Board of Trustees which is made up of three full-time Sabbatical Officers, four student trustees and three external trustees. The Sabbatical officers are elected each year by, and from, the student membership of the university. They take a year out of their studies (or immediately after graduating) to take on a fulltime paid staff role and to serve as a trustee.

We have done a huge amount of work over the last 6 months to turn the organisation around to ensure it is wholly focussed on supporting our diverse membership who study at the three campuses. We have updated our staffing structure to have our expertise equally focussed on each campus and have also changed our sabbatical officer structure to do the same.

The British Heart Foundation (BHF) is the leading cardiovascular research charity in the UK, funding around £100 million of life saving research each year - with the Retail directorate contributing nearly £30 million towards this annually. 

We are looking for a dynamic, innovative, Head of Retail Service to join our team in supporting our funding of life saving research. You will develop and deliver the Retail service proposition across BHF Retail, driving customer and donor satisfaction. 

As Head of Retail Service, you’ll be responsible for fostering a culture of service across the Retail directorate as well as implementing strategies aligned with our values to enhance the overall customer experience, both internal colleagues and external stakeholders (customers & donors).

You’ll lead a small team and work with the wider Retail leadership team to ensure to continually develop and improve the retail service proposition that we deliver. This role will involve collaboration with stakeholders across the business, within Retail and the wider BHF.

Using data led insight, you’ll analyse processes and feedback to identify trends and highlight areas for improvement and opportunities for innovation to stay ahead of the curve and find ways to surprise and delight our customer.

Working arrangements

This is a blended role, where your work will be dual located between your home and either our London head office or our Northampton office. There will be some travel to stores and our Customer Service Centre in Birmingham required.

The use of our office spaces is driven in part by your role and the activities you need to do. This may vary from time to time, so you must be prepared to work in a flexible way to unlock your best work for our cause. Most of our colleagues on blended contracts can expect to spend some time in their office each week, on average.

About you

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in Retail Service with a focus on both internal and external stakeholders. A strategic thinker you’ll have a focus on long-term service excellence and a passion for delivering outstanding service experiences for both employees and customers.

You’ll be familiar with customer service tools and software used in retail, such as POS systems, CRM software, and communications platforms and will have working knowledge of consumer rights legislation, trading standards and data protection requirements.

Role description and purpose

The post-holder will be responsible for the successful leadership and management of CPA’s portfolio of programmes in line with the strategic direction set by the Council and Trustees. Reporting directly to the CEO, the post-holder will be a key member of the senior management team, leading the Programme/Project Management team and working with the Finance Manager, Communications Lead, Research Lead, Advisors and other key staff to develop and deliver CPA programmes across the Commonwealth and beyond. This will include strategic planning, project and team management, development of workplans and budgets, provision of leadership, good governance and oversight of all programme-related activities. This role will be responsible for engaging and working with external agencies, subject matter experts, and all relevant stakeholders to ensure the on-budget delivery of high-quality outputs across CPA’s portfolio of programmes. The post holder will also be required to work with other Leads and key staff across the organisation to scope and develop relationships with potential funders and support the creation of funding proposals for future programmes and workstreams, integrating their delivery into the overall programmes portfolio.

Key duties and responsibilities

Leadership and operational planning, management and oversight

• Collaborate with the Board, CEO and key staff to develop and advance the organisational strategic plan and goals and ensure programme areas align with strategic plan.

• Implement the strategic plan, integrating all aspects of the organisation’s work into programmes, including policy, advocacy, communications, product development, research and evaluation.

• Work with the CEO and senior management team, creating, maintaining, and/or overseeing systems and processes to ensure effective management of the daily operations of the programmes team and an organisational structure that supports the organisation’s goals.

Programme planning and management

• Oversee and lead the development and delivery of high-quality programmes, services and resources in line with users’ needs and the wider global health landscape, taking into consideration other relevant internal and external programmes, services and resources already available or under development.

• Lead and direct the appropriate use of programme resources including staffing and finances, ensuring programmes are delivered to budget in accordance to agreed KPIs and outcomes.

• Manage grant life cycles, from request to close. This entails supporting the writing of/reviewing applications, overseeing budgets, reviewing or producing relevant reports, and monitoring impact.

• Deepen existing relationships with donors, agencies, and stakeholders to enhance programme sustainability, engaging with key stakeholders to understand their needs and align programme offerings accordingly.

• Working with other key staff, and in alignment with the strategic priorities of the charity, support the identification and development of new partnerships and funding opportunities to expand the programme portfolio.

Human resources planning and management

• Leading the programmes team, including direct line management responsibility, regular one-to-ones, team meetings, pastoral support and appraisals.

• Determine human resource requirements for the management and delivery of programmes, services and resources; recruit, select and appoint appropriate staff according to need and funding availability.

• Ensure adherence to human resources policies, procedures and practices including the development of job descriptions for all staff.

• Establish and maintain good staff relationships and morale, ensuring a healthy and safe work environment in accordance with all appropriate legislation and regulations.

• Identify and develop systems to support staff development and identify opportunities for staff development where possible.

Cross-team working and collaboration

• Work collaboratively with colleagues to ensure that programmes, services and resources are effectively communicated/disseminated and evaluated.

• Use available data and information for evidence-based decision making, to continuously develop and improve programmes, services and resources.

External relationships, strategic partnerships and collaboration

• Advocate for and communicate the organisation’s vision, objectives, core programmes, services and resources to all relevant stakeholders, building strong partnerships that further the organisation’s profile and reputation.

• Attend and report at core organisational meetings, and relevant internal and external conferences and events, raising the profile of the CPA and gathering strategic insights relevant to the organisation’s programmes and wider vision and mission.

Person Specification 

Essential .

• Significant programme leadership experience within the international development/global health context.

• Experience of working in a not-for-profit organisation/NGO.

• 5 years plus programme management experience, including development and implementation of governance processes, financial and risk management.

• Excellent organisational and planning skills with the ability to devise, plan and execute work plans to budget within strict timelines to deliver objectives.

• Proven business development skills, with evidence of successful funding awards and/or product development in a growing organisation.

• Demonstrable experience of team working, with proven track record in managing, developing and motivating a team.

• Excellent interpersonal, negotiation, relationship building and influencing skills.

• Experience with managing funder and / or high level stakeholders relationship.

• Comfortable balancing competing demands and delivery of high-quality outputs in line with objectives and timelines.

• High-level English writing, speaking and presentation skills and the ability to effectively communicate complex ideas and information to various audiences and stakeholders 

• Flexible and adaptable approach to work. 

• Proficiency in online/digital systems (e.g. MSOffice, etc.) and comfortable in adopting new tools.

Desirable 

• Qualification in Pharmacy and / or front-line experience of the healthcare workforce.

• Familiarity with antimicrobial resistance.

• Familiarity with the Commonwealth.

Role outline: Managing the deployment and maintenance of Repowering’s low-carbon infrastructure, leading the Community Retrofit team 

Contract: Full-time role with probation period of 3 months.

Salary: £49-55k

Location: Primarily Repowering London’s office in Brixton, with option of partial working from home. Minimum of 3 days per week must be spent in the Repowering London office. Support will be provided for remote/home working if you need it.

About the role:

We are looking for an experienced and self-motivated person with experience of low carbon retrofit, asset management, and business development to join Repowering London’s growing team. You will be a core part of our mission to tackle climate change and move towards a more inclusive and sustainable future. 

This will be a high-profile role within the executive team of a nationally significant social enterprise that is at the leading edge of urban community energy, with significant ambitions for scale and impact. You will work alongside the Executive Team with shared responsibility for setting and realising the organisation’s goals, strategic priorities, and business plan. 

Community Retrofit is a place-based approach to decarbonisation and community development, that creates low-carbon infrastructure, which is technically integrated at a local level, and provides direct benefits to local communities, for example through community ownership, affordable energy supply, or high-quality jobs.

You will be responsible for leading the Community Retrofit team. The team currently encompasses seven staff working across domestic and non-domestic:

• Rooftop solar installations

• Communal heat networks 

• Retrofit assessment and coordination 

• Data collection and analysis 

• Asset management 

Rooftop solar is the most established asset type deployed by Repowering, with installations dating to 2013. Retrofit assessment and coordination services started in 2023, and communal heat network investments are expected in 2025.

You will be responsible for ensuring high quality installations of low carbon assets that perform as forecast.

You will lead the development of improvements to our processes for evaluating potential sites and deploying and maintaining low carbon assets and retrofit measures. 

The role will require ongoing refinement of Repowering’s community retrofit offer to community groups, building owners and public bodies such as Local Authorities, and support the growth of long-term partnerships with our stakeholders, including supply chain partners.

In particular, working with the Repowering executive team you will support the incubation of a suite of a finance offers that allow a wider range of households, businesses and communities to participate in community retrofit. 

You will also support Repowering’s work to increase employment opportunities for young people in the low carbon sector, through how we structure our procurement for installations and by the training programmes we run in-house and with partners.

The Community Retrofit Team is one of Repowering’s four key teams, which include Communities, Energy Supply, and Core Operations. Each of these teams supports the work of the others and ongoing coordination and communication will be an important part of the role to maximise the opportunities for learning and innovation across the organisation.

Person specification

The right candidate will have a high level of technical due diligence, project management and business development experience, with a track record in leading successful teams. This is particularly important as Repowering London is in a growth phase and is expected to expand significantly in the coming years. You will be comfortable working collaboratively and managing a number of staff and external contractors, as well as building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders.

As this role is at the most senior level of the organisation, it provides an opportunity to shape business development and long-term strategy. Experience of commercial service delivery will be key to creating a sustainable platform for Community Retrofit.

For this role, we will be looking for and assessing candidates on the following:

• Exceptional leadership skills to lead a growing team and manage a portfolio of projects

• Experience of asset deployment and maintenance in the construction, retrofit or renewable energy sectors

• Track record of developing and growing a commercial service or product

• Formal training in engineering, architecture or quantity surveying

• Experience of managing multi-partner projects, that may include academia, technical experts, contractors and local government

• Analytical skills to interpret data and financial models

• Excellent written and oral communications skills and confidence in presenting to a wide range of audiences

• Interest in community retrofit as a concept and strategy

• Capacity to self-reflect on performance, proactively problem-solve and welcome feedback on performance

The following are not essential for the role but would be good to have:

• Experience of publicly funded grant schemes or loan finance

• Experience of energy services and supply contracts

• Experience of customer journey development, using digital platforms

• Understanding of PAS2035 requirements

• Experience of building energy modelling, such as SAP or PHPP

• Accreditation as a retrofit coordinator or assessor

• Familiarity with Notion, MS Project or other collaborative project management tools
