Overview:
Spires supports homeless and vulnerably housed people in South London. This role focuses on trusts, foundations, and government funding, working closely with the CEO to maintain strong funder relationships and deliver compelling bids.
Spires has undergone a period of rapid transformation, moving to a model of multi-site working across three London Boroughs. Our core services include, day centre style drop-ins for homeless people, a Women’s drop in, a Refugee drop in and outreach targeted at supporting Women who are sex working.
Part 1: Job profile
1.1 Purpose of job
To generate income from a diverse funding pool that includes trusts, foundations, government and other funding sources as appropriate. Trusts and foundations remain the primary funding source for Spires so maintaining consistent application output is a core element of the role.
To manage our relationships with funders which will include reporting, networking and proactive engagement.
Work with Spires CEO and the Head of Client Services to ensure that data and outcomes are being effectively captured in a way that is helpful for evidencing impact.
1.2 Position in organisation
The post holder will report directly to the Chief Executive Officer. Whilst not an operational role, the post holder will maintain a connection to our services so as to be able to represent the service accurately in funding bids.
Part 2: Key duties and responsibilities
2.1 Income generation
- Maximise existing and find new income to meet agreed income targets.
- Research, write and present attractive propositions for a range of quality funding bids, proposals and documentation.
- Produce and submit quality funding reports to meet deadlines.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of fundraising regulations, networks and developments across the sector, advising on best practice
2.3 Planning, monitoring and reporting
- Contribute to internal planning and budget setting, setting out clear plans for income generation.
- Contribute to forecasting and regular reporting, producing verbal and written reports for the CEO.
- Actively manage contracts to ensure that Spires is delivering agreed outcomes and spending restricted funds correctly.
2.4 General
- Feed into the updated fundraising strategy.
- Undertaking other duties compatible with the level and nature of the post and/or reasonably required by more senior members of staff.

Part 3: Person specification
3.1 Essential experience
- Experience of working in the fundraising sector in a professional capacity
- Experience of securing significant grants or multi-year funding from trusts or statutory sources
- A demonstrable track record of successfully generating income and achieving targets

Part 4: Summary of terms and conditions of service
Location: The postholder will be an employee of The Spires Centre. This post is based at 2nd Floor, Elmfield House, 5 Stockwell Mews, SW9 9GX This role will by hybrid with three days in the office and two days from home.
Probation: This post is subject to a 6 month probationary period.
Notice: This post is subject to an 12 weeks’ notice period once confirmed in post.
Annual leave: The annual leave entitlement is 35 days per year including 8 bank holidays.
Pension: The Spires Centre will contribute 5% of annual salary for those who qualify for our group pension plan.
Other benefits: The Spires Centre will provide life and income protection insurance for those who qualify for our group plans.
Expenses: This role will require travel within London. Out-of-pocket expenses will be paid when incurred in accordance with our expenses policy.
Safeguarding: The postholder will adhere to The Spires Centre’s safeguarding policy for vulnerable adults.
DBS Check: Because of the need to interact with our vulnerable clients a satisfactory enhanced DBS check will be required.

The Public Affairs Officer will work closely with the wider Campaigns and Public Affairs Team which is responsible for JRF's policy influencing and cross organisational influencing strategies. The first six months would focus on relationship building, getting to grips with JRFs processes, laying the groundwork for regular reporting updates. This would include:
- Work across broader JRF teams to offer support to the different 'Stretch Policy Groups' on mapping potential MPs to influence.
- Taking ownership of the system for tracking impact and measuring progress against our organisational influencing objectives.
- Looking for potential opportunities in parliament to make use of JRF's policy proposals.
- Work closely with the Senior Public Affairs Officer to ensure we are co-ordinating political engagement effectively.
Key responsibilities
- Public affairs support: Assist in the delivery of policy and advocacy activities, including parliamentary events, building our presence at party or sectoral conferences, written briefings and MP engagement.
- Horizon scanning: With a focus on the Westminster parliament, UK government departments and the main city regions (England), keep a running watch for suitable opportunities for JRF to advance its arguments with key audiences and ensure that relevant colleagues are alerted well in advance to be able to respond.
- Stakeholder mapping: Identify parliamentarians who may be interested in working with us, build detailed profiles of the issues that matter to them, and maintain a core list of public affairs stakeholders.
- Stakeholder engagement: Support colleagues (by gathering information through desk top research or other methods) to prepare for their interactions with high value targets and record top level details of any contact between them and JRF.
- Network building: Build an effective network of contacts among the support staff in political offices and/or opposite numbers in other organisations with a view to identifying opportunities for collaboration between JRF and their employers.
- Representation and insight gathering: Observe speeches, conferences, and select committee hearings and report any noteworthy points.
The successful candidate will need to demonstrate the following knowledge and experience:
- Experience of working (either in a paid or voluntary capacity) in a public affairs/policy/political team and demonstrating initiative and flexibility to deal with a range of tasks.
- Experience of networking and using interpersonal skills to develop and promote excellent relationships.
- Experience of analysing information, conducting research and finding positive solutions to challenges.
- Confidence managing multiple projects to tight deadlines.
- Ability to work collaboratively across multi-disciplinary teams.
- Experience of tracking political engagement across a project / campaign (desirable)
- Experience working with people who have lived experience of poverty and hardship campaigning for change (desirable)
- A strong understanding of UK Government and Parliamentary procedure.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including engaging with parliamentary audiences.
- A good understanding of the issues facing low-income households in the UK and how political developments may affect them.
- An understanding of JRF's mission and work, and the context behind our policy aims.

The successful candidate will be based at JRF's London office. Additionally, the Campaigns and Public Affairs Team find being in the office beneficial to their work and team building, therefore hybrid working at JRF means staff are encouraged to attend the office at least twice a week. The Individual Giving team look after donors across philanthropy, corporate, members and legators. The Role

As our Service User Participation Worker, you’ll make sure service-user voice actively shapes our culture, communications and service design. You’ll build community connection, run meaningful participation activities, and capture powerful lived-experience insight that directly influences decision-making, storytelling and strategy.
You’ll work closely with colleagues across communications, therapy, fundraising and leadership — translating real experiences into real change.

About You

Experience of working with disabled people, health settings, charities or co-production models is an advantage — but mindset matters just as much as background.

Reporting directly to the Head, this post will be targeted with generating £500k+ of revenue and will demand both exceptional relationship building skills and technical fundraising expertise. The successful candidate will have freedom to innovate and make a tangible difference and be able to engage prospective donors and the wider highly supportive Seniors (Alumni) community. You will protect the School’s reputation by conducting thorough due diligence on donors and ensuring full compliance with OSCR regulations.
You will be responsible for the School’s capital and strategic fundraising initiatives supported by the Alumni and Development Officer and will work with the supportive, mission-driven Executive Team and Board of Governors to develop and implement these.
To be successful you will be educated to degree level and have knowledge and experience in previous roles where you have developed a demonstrable track record of devising and implementing multi-year fundraising strategies which have allowed you to personally secure 5 and 6 figure gifts from individuals, trusts or foundations. You will possess the financial and legal expertise to structure complex gifts and bring them to completion.
