Summary of the role:
As the Business Development specialist, you will be taking on a leadership role in the organisations plans for seeking growth in new markets through institutional relationships. These include (but are not limited to): the Middle East (Qatar, UAE, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait), Canada, and Europe. This is a senior technical position that performs a variety of complex business development work across the organisation.
About the Role:
- Develop donor and new market engagement strategies and associated implementation plans
- Engage internal and external senior stakeholders, influencing as needed to ensure that your team can maximise all opportunities.
- Engage, build and manage relationships with targeted donors in new selected markets. Coordinate efforts with other team members responsible for income generation from Trusts and Foundations, corporate donors, and high-net worth donors.
- Lead a comprehensive donor scoping and mapping exercise for donors in targeted new market. Continuously, update this mapping document based on engagement with prospective donors.
- Identify and track relevant upcoming funding opportunities – through advance intelligence gathering, partner relationships, and other available resources
- Provide grant management oversight on portfolio of grants funded by new Market donors and serve as primarily focal point for donor communications.
About You:
To be successful in this role you will need:
- Postgraduate degree in international development, sustainable livelihoods, humanitarianism, programme management, or equivalent.
- Understanding of development programmes design, implementation and evaluation.
- Knowledge of overseas markets and/or experience of successfully fundraising in a different market to the UK. Experience with Middle Eastern Donors is highly desirable.
- Experience of successfully fundraising and dealing with institutional donors and international donors, with a focus on Trusts and Foundations.
- Excellent technical skills in writing, editing, formatting, research, negotiation, and verbal communications.
- Excellent networking and influencing skills, both internal and external. Specifically experience of supporting cultural change within an organisation, influencing sideways and upwards to gain buy in and active support from senior staff as needed.

To support the Programme Finance Manager in running efficient and effective programme financial accounting, programme financial management and programme financial reporting processes in relation to AKF (UK)’s programmes and grants. To provide support to the full life cycle of grants: from donor concept notes/proposals to final reports. To maintain a close working relationship with AKF (UK) finance and programme teams and relevant staff from across the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) agencies and external donors as required.
Programme financial planning, management and reporting
In close consultation with the programmes/partnerships team:
• Support the design and implementation of effective quality controls to ensure compliance with donor requirements and to maintain appropriate donor stewardship, including through manuals, checklists, templates, and other tools
• Monitor spending and activity implementation and ensure regular scheduling of grants management meetings, alerting the Programme Finance Manager and Programmes/Partnerships team about significant under or overspend on a timely basis
• Maintain internal tools that track active grants, cost recoveries and cash balances and ensure they are kept up-to date
• Maintain internal tools tracking pipeline and secured funding (Awards Information Management System -AIMS) and ensure they are kept up-to-date
• Prepare financial information for internal reporting purposes, including (but not limited to) the quarterly CEO report, monthly dashboard and quarterly cash balances (co-finance) report.
Grants management and compliance
• Maintain the grants management tracker so that grants are properly recorded and monitored, ensuring that input from the Programmes/Partnerships team and the Programme Finance Manager are incorporated on a timely basis
• Undertake administrative tasks related to grants, including setting up of grant codes (pipeline and secured), collecting and forwarding information to different units and executing follow up tasks as required
• Review budgets for concepts/proposals, ensuring the inclusion of AKF(UK) costs, make recommendations for improvements and liaise with the programme/partnerships team and field units to ensure these are complete, accurate, consistent with the narrative, compliant with donor requirements, and correctly formatted for presentation to donors
• Support the preparation, review and submission process for donor financial (and narrative as relevant, e.g. ECHO) reports to ensure compliance with donor requirements; ensure reports are produced on time to a high standard and are consistent with the narrative
• Ensure timely submission of cash requests as required by donor contracts and internal sub-grant agreements
• Prepare donor and internal sub-grant agreements with AKDN agencies, field units, and implementing partners, including (but not limited to) those with co-financing
• Ensure that donor and AKDN rules are being adhered to regarding procurement, accounting, project expenditure, and implementation of activities through regular reporting, engagement with the field, and remote spot checks
• Carry out monitoring visits and audits on specific projects as necessary
• Assist in the preparation, support, and follow up of internal or external grant audits and expenditure verifications of AKDN field units, including direct liaison with auditors as required, and ensure that management (programmes and finance) is apprised, including through maintaining and updating the audit and disallowance summary
• Develop and deliver relevant training and reference material on grants management, including procurement, donor regulations, IATI, finance and reporting for Programme, Finance, and other field-based staff; act as a resource for agencies/field units on donor regulations and compliance
• Ensure all AKF (UK) direct grants are reflected on the IATI system, and update the required information on a quarterly basis
Audit, internal controls and risk
• Contribute on programme finance to all audits and statutory compliance in line with UK and AKF/AKDN regulations and compliance requirements
• In collaboration with field units, prepare due diligence assessments for potential new partners or donors and ensure these are refreshed periodically
• Troubleshoot financial, donor compliance and procurement-related queries identified through monitoring grants or as raised by management or field units
Carry out any other duties as assigned by the Programme Finance Manager or the Head of Finance and Operations. The role will involve travel to countries in which we operate grants. Normally this could be 2 – 3 trips per year.
Qualifications
• CCAB qualified accountant (desirable).
Experience
• 3 years relevant experience in financial accounting and financial reporting
• Experience of designing and managing effective administrative systems and procedures
• Experience of budgeting, forecasting and cash-flow management
• Experience working in international organisations or donor agencies including field-level implementation highly desirable
• Experience working with EC, ECHO, DFID or equivalent and familiarity with the various compliance rules and regulations highly desirable
Skills
• Good interpersonal, customer care and liaison skills with a wide range of stakeholders
• First rate oral and written communication skills
• Ability to work under pressure and to manage competing priorities and deliver to tight deadlines
• Ability to problem solve, working with both internal and external stakeholders to deliver results

Work Location/Hybrid Working Pattern
This role will be based at our Head Office in central London. Mothers’ Union operates a hybrid working model. Staff are required to work an aggregate minimum of 90 days per calendar year (pro rata for part timers) at our Head Office, Mary Sumner House in central London. Tuesdays are our anchor days where every staff member is expected to be at the office. The 90 days includes anchor Tuesdays. In addition, Thursday is a core working day where part time staff are expected to work, either at home or from the office as needed.

Our Communications Services team is seeking a talented Communications Officer, Social Media and Digital, with a background in sustainable development, science or health communications. The successful applicant will be educated to degree level with at least a 2:1 or 1st class honours degree.
You will need to be creative with the ability to produce social media campaigns, digital content and videos, and lead the development of engaging websites to tell our clients’ stories. What you will do

You’ll need to think strategically and creatively, respond effectively to emerging trends, and help our team develop and grow.
Your role will include:
- Leading social media and digital communications services: you will conceptualise, coordinate and deliver social media campaigns, videos, websites, newsletters and other digital products for our clients – leading innovative content strategies that drive engagement.
- Content creation: you will create social media content and assets, graphics, videos and animations. You will also develop design templates and mock-ups, format presentations and Microsoft Word documents, produce event materials and make website updates.
- Project management: you will be the main point of contact for specific clients and projects, gathering requests for new products and services, and coordinating content development and graphic design work with other team members to ensure that projects are delivered efficiently and effectively. This may lead to overseas trips for some clients.

This role has strong inter-relations within realms of strategy, programmes, operations, planning and monitoring, and serves as an expert for the CALP team on strategic fundraising and donor relations.

Key Accountabilities
- Share whole team leadership as a manager
- Strategically lead CALP’s fundraising vision, approach, strategy and plans; build partnerships and broker relations with current and new donors as part of CALP’s longer-term fundraising ambitions.
- Develop the long-term funding vision and strategy, and develop and lead its implementation to ensure funding of CALP’s plans now and in the future
- Research and prospect for new donors and funding streams.
- Engage at the strategic level in proposal development and reporting; plus carry out operational work in terms of reviewing and editing proposals and reports
- Represent and manage CALP’s relationships (from a funding perspective) with donors
- Work with CALP grant managers and the Operations Team to ensure understanding of compliance as per grant agreements; communicate with donors to clarify any compliance queries
- Manage the funding relationships with host agencies
- Coordinate overall funding across grants
- Provide quality assurance of funding proposals and reports and ensure compliance with donor agreements
- Provide management support for and foster personal development of the Donor Relations Officer
- Accountable for CALP’s reputation with donors from a funding perspective
Essential Technical Skills, Experience & Knowledge
- Degree or equivalent qualification in an appropriate technical field, or equivalent level of professional experience.
- Significant, proven experience of generating substantial funding including proven ability to develop funding strategies, plan effectively and deliver complex funding applications and donor reports.
- High level experience and knowledge of key humanitarian and development donors such as: ECHO, BHA/USAID, GFFO, FCDO and European government donors.
- Knowledge and experience of working with consortium-based funding.
- Proven strategic design and management skills including good programme development ability and proven knowledge of M&E at project and programme levels.
- Significant experience with budgeting, financial reporting, including managing and reporting on complex programme budgets.
- Ability to develop and manage complex relationships.
- Proven experience of funding management systems/databases.
- Very strong conceptual and analytical skills, including excellent facilitation, negotiation, and influencing skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English - report writing, and presentation skills, including the ability to present complex issues clearly and concisely and to motivate and persuade at high levels.
- Diplomacy, good interpersonal skills and ability to remain calm under pressure while not losing sight of strategic priorities.
- Proven initiative, flexibility and ability to prioritise and work to tight deadlines across multiple time zones.
Desirable attributes
- Strong understanding of the humanitarian sector.
- Experience working with foundations and philanthropy
- Fluency in Arabic, French or Spanish, in addition to English
- Experience of working in a virtual network or remote team
- Staff management experience
