About the University of Bristol Students’ Union

Bristol SU has been at the heart of student life for 100 years, we are part business, part charity, part membership body – and a seriously positive and empowering place to work.

Our professional staff do something extraordinary every day – we support student leaders to give people a voice in their education, help people get the most out of their student experience and make the change they want in the world.

It’s an exciting time to join Bristol SU. We are one year into a new strategy, which has people as our core focus. A key strategic priority is to enable talented people to deliver quality outcomes, in a compassionate culture.

We are already an excellent place to work with 91% of our staff feeling we have strong values and ethics, and 88% of our staff would recommend us as a place to work.

We provide excellent benefits for our staff and go beyond the expected wherever possible.

There is still more we can do!

About the role

Key objectives for you in this role will include:

  • Ensuring we attract and retain the best and most diverse people
  • Supporting our teams to succeed with excellent central frameworks for performance, planning, internal communication and governance.
  • Advancing inclusivity and accessibility – ensuring our policies and practices are genuinely sector-leading.

In the first year, key projects will include:

  • Guiding the development of a new approach to Learning and Development
  • Leading us toward Disability Confidence
  • Leading a review and implement change to our reward (pay) and benefits
  • Selecting and implementing a new HR System

You will be given autonomy to shape, own, and deliver a key part of our strategic plan and be part of an established and high-performing senior management team.

Who we are looking for

We are open-minded about your professional background, though expect you to have operated in an HR position and can articulate how and why effective people strategies enable people to deliver. There is no expectation that you will have worked in an SU before, and we will consider the transferable backgrounds carefully. We are also open-minded to flexible working and part-time working requests.

We are proud that equality and diversity is one of our core values. We are committed to challenging injustice, supporting others to overcome systemic barriers and building accessible structures that open up access to all of our student members. We expect that you will share our commitment and values.

In recent years, we have had successful women, LGBTQ+ and ethnic minority leaders join us in key SLT positions. Though due to excellent retention at managerial and SMT levels and a low volume of vacancies, diversity within our senior roles isn’t as representative as we would like.

We deeply value the diversity of thought, background and experience and want to address this. We welcome all applications and would love to encourage disabled people, women and people from ethnic minorities to consider this opportunity.

This role is part-time, between 3 and 4 days per week. We aim to be a flexible employer and we support and promote part-time working, including within the senior management team. We ask all our team to work from the office for 40% of their time to help maintain our ‘one team’ culture.

If there is any barrier that you feel prevents you from considering this opportunity, please get in touch to discuss it.
