ROLE OVERVIEW

As the Communications Manager, you will play a pivotal role in supporting every aspect of our charity’s work. Working closely with the Senior Management Team, you will be responsible for planning and delivering engaging communications across various channels. From crafting compelling narratives to managing digital marketing campaigns, your efforts will raise awareness, drive income generation, and amplify the voices of those we serve.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Develop and implement strategic communication plans to promote our diverse range of initiatives.
• Create compelling content that reflects the diversity of our work and inspires compassion and support from the public.
• Utilise digital marketing tools and platforms to reach a wider audience and drive engagement.
• Manage our WordPress website and ensure its content remains relevant and up-to-date.
• Collaborate with internal teams to ensure alignment and consistency in messaging.
• Utilise your project management skills to meet tight deadlines and deliver successful campaigns.

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

• Good working knowledge of digital marketing via social media platforms and ecomms.
• Familiarity with the housing association and/or homelessness sector.
• Proven experience in marketing and communications within the Charity Sector.
• Track record of delivering creative ideas and successful marketing campaigns.
• Proficiency in IT tools including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, publishing software, and databases.
• Exceptional attention to detail and strong written and verbal communication skills.

Who we are

The problem - On average, 160 young people are excluded from school each week. Once excluded, prospects for these young people are bleak, with only 4% achieving good GCSE grades, and 67% entering sustained education, employment or training compared to 96% of their non-excluded peers. This can be a pipeline to prison, with concerning statistics showing 63% of prisoners having been excluded from school.

Our mission - To ensure that young people who have been excluded from school are not excluded from society.

Who we serve - We support the hardest to reach young people in the most disadvantaged communities, each of whom are most at risk of experiencing school exclusion or are at risk of being excluded. Young people who are eligible for free school meals are 4x more likely to get excluded, along with black Caribbean boys. Young people with special educational needs are also six times as likely to be excluded as their peers.

Our work - We work in a number of different settings both during term time and after school. Our coaches lead small groups of 8-10 young people, using sport as a hook and mentorship as an anchor to develop their soft skills, as well as improve their physical & mental wellbeing. This, coupled with exposure to the work place through Career Taster Days, raises their aspirations and puts young people in a better position to enter sustained education, employment or training (EET) when they leave school.

This is a new role for Emmaus Bristol. Through our five-year-planning process we identified a new staffing
structure that will allow our charity to thrive and to grow. The Learning Specialist contributes to the development and delivery of training materials and resources within the organisation. Using their years of frontline work and deep understanding of the challenges faced by young refugees and asylum seekers, Young Roots are now focusing on campaigning and influencing policy to bring about positive change. The Head of Finance and Operations will support significant growth and associated transformation of their Finance and Operations to underpin their ability to provide these vital services to support young refugee’s increasingly complex needs.

Reporting to the CEO and leading a team of 3, the Head of Finance and Internal Operations is a critical leadership role providing advice and analysis to the Board and its Committees. This role will drive the vision and direction of Young Roots as a member of the Senior Leadership Team and will set the strategy for Finance, HR, IT and Facilities. This role offers a rare opportunity to contribute at a big-picture strategic level, whilst maintaining the ability to manage their finances in a hands-on way for a genuinely amazing charity.

Key Responsibilities:  

• Leadership: As part of the Senior Leadership Team, support the CEO to develop, implement, and drive the vision and strategy for Young Roots; Develop and lead a first-class Finance and Operations Team; Support the SLT in its decision-making by providing expert analysis across finance, governance, HR, IT, risk, and facilities perspectives.  
• Finance & Planning: Provide robust financial governance and long-term financial planning; Lead financial reporting, production of management accounts, budgeting, reforecasting, and cashflow monitoring; Partner with Head of Fundraising and the SLT to ensure income generation and fundraising strategy is fit-for-purpose; Ensure statutory responsibilities are delivered in compliance to charity SORP; Lead the audit process; Ensure finance systems and controls are fit-for-purpose; Manage all contracts, ensuring services and bids are valued robustly and reflect ROI; Manage payroll; Ensure funding partners receive insightful financial reporting.
• HR: With the CEO and HR Manager, develop and implement a DEI and Wellbeing strategy; Ensure HR policies and procedures are fit-for-purpose, including ER, recruitment, and H&S.
• IT: With IT Consultant, develop and lead the implementation of IT and Digital Transformation strategy; Ensure database and day-to-day IT support is in place; Act as Data Officer.
• Premises: Oversee facilities function; Lead on lease and building issues; Support CEO, SLT, and Trustees with premises options and represent Young Roots with landlord and agent; Ensure all facilities including IT, office space, and utilities are fit-for-purpose and compliant.

What you’ll offer us:

• Qualified Accountant. Track-record of providing financial information, annual reports & accounts to Senior Leaders, Board and Trustees within the charity sector
• Hands-on and strategic. Ability to think strategically about the future director of the charity and translate that vision into a financial strategy and operational plans and changes. Ability to communicating effectively to Trustees and operations staff
• Ambition. Young Roots are open to someone stepping into their first SLT role.  
• Leadership. Ability to contribute to a values-based and ambitious culture and experience motivating, and empowering staff
• Charity Expert. Strong knowledge of SORP, and expertise in restricted fund accounting.
• Audit leadership
• Desire to oversee HR, Facilities, and IT functions.
• First-class collaboration, time-management, and communication skills, with the ability to work autonomously with strategic guidance from the CEO  
• Ability to visit the King's Cross and Brent offices / activities on a monthly basis and a monthly all-staff away day in central London.
• Ability to attend Saturday morning Board meetings 6 times per year.

About the Role

This role is an exciting opportunity to work for Mind BLMK as part of the Fundraising & Engagement Team.

The Fundraising and Engagement Manager will lead the development and successful rollout of Mind BLMK’s Fundraising and Engagement strategy, annual plans, generation income and key project work which aim to deliver significant net income growth and increase awareness by maximising local support.

The successful applicant will ensure the Fundraising and Engagement strategy meets the needs of supporters, including those affected by mental health issues, as appropriate.

Key Duties

• Be the leading authority on Fundraising and Engagement activity at Mind BLMK, devising the strategies as well as developing and delivering the annual operational plan.
• Maintain a strong strategic vision of Fundraising and Engagement activity at Mind BLMK and ensure developments are in line with the wider organisation strategies. Support colleagues to embrace change for long-term benefit.
• Ensure the Fundraising and Engagement strategy meets the needs of supporters, including those affected by mental health issues, as appropriate.
• Maintain an effective workforce for the department in line with Mind BLMK’s HR policies, procedures and guidance (recruitment, line management, workload planning, support and development of the Fundraising and Engagement support role).
• Manage and develop the risk analysis of Fundraising income to provide up-to-date financial forecasts to Line Manager / CEO and Board as required.
• Take a leadership role within the organisation to promote collaborative working with colleagues to deliver on Fundraising and communication potential.
• Provide expert advice on fundraising to wider Mind BLMK colleagues, volunteers and supporters on Fundraising theory and operational delivery, as required.
• Source and nurture local major donors, building and maintaining the relationships to deliver on Fundraising targets.
• Contribute to local trust and grant applications, working collaboratively with colleagues and following agreed systems and processes.
• Deliver successful portfolio of local events which meet or exceed agreed participant numbers, average raised per participant and overall return on investment.
• Provide exceptional stewardship to current supporters to ensure that income and opportunities are maximised in accordance with Fundraising processes.
• Hold responsibility for the implementation of Mind branding guidelines and specifications across the organisation, reviewing, monitoring and advising as necessary to ensure corporate identity is maintained in line with Mind BLMK policies and procedures.
