The IRC:
Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) is a global leader in providing emergency relief, rehabilitation, post conflict development, human rights protection, resettlement services and advocacy for refugees and others uprooted or affected by violent conflict and oppression. Over the past 17 years, the IRC has pioneered and implemented programs that prevent and respond to violence against women and children, as well as other vulnerable groups in refugee settings and in other conflict-affected contexts. IRC is one of the first humanitarian organisations to bring together specific expertise involved in violence prevention and response (VPR) in conflict affected settings to ensure collaborative and still specialized support to survivors and those at risk of violence. IRC presently implements VPR programs in over 26 countries, to support social and political environments that foster freedom from violence, discrimination, and exclusion for marginalized populations in contexts of crisis.

Background to the role
AUKEL recruited a new Chief Executive in April 2023, and a new chair in February 2024. In March 2024 we published an ambitious five year strategy which sets out how we want to increase the extent we meet the needs of older people in East London. We have a number of organisational transformation objectives which underpin the strategy; these are things we need to do to strengthen our foundations (following a period of rapid growth) and equip us to deliver safe effective services, at scale, across our footprint.
We are looking for someone to join our team to work with the Service Director to lead the transformation of our Hospital and Home services. These:
- Currently are provided at four hospitals broadly covering four boroughs: Homerton (Hackney), Newham (Newham), The Royal London (Tower Hamlets), Whipps Cross (Waltham Forest). And are staffed by 16 AUKEL employees – three co-ordinators, two project officers, 10 support workers, and an administrator.
- Homerton and The Royal London are jointly commissioned until end March 2029. Newham has been extended to the end of June 2026. Whipps Cross is due to be re-procured, with a short extension under consideration, we aim to jointly bid for this with our neighbouring AUKs.
- Assist vulnerable adults in getting home from hospital, carrying out safety checks in the home, give advice on practical and wellbeing matters, and visiting regularly for a period of four to six weeks after discharge
- Are commissioned based on meeting pre-agreed targets for the number of referrals accepted, and are fully embedded into the hospital discharge system.
- Typically include provision of handyperson services, which is operationally delivered separately by three handypeople.
- Include our (paid for) Home and Care service which is delivered separately to our hospital discharge services, and currently supports c. 40 individuals.
This will be a challenging and rewarding role; you’ll need experience of change management and of leading operations. You will be resilient and will have values which align with ours: Kind, Accountable, Collaborative, Flexible and Inclusive. This is a chance to join our team at an exciting time; we’ll expect a great deal of you but in return you’ll be well supported, invested-in and given lots of opportunity to learn and grow as an organisational leader.
We’re particularly hoping to recruit someone from the global majority as our leadership team doesn’t currently adequately represent the communities we serve.

The Role
The Water and Land Stewardship Team (W&LS) lead the identification and delivery of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) to improve rivers and catchments across the South East. Through evidence, stakeholder engagement and on-the-ground experience, this new senior role will lead and develop NbS project opportunities. You will aim for impact, scale and collaboration.
You will be responsible for delivering projects to scale up NbS across the SERT area, and lead the ‘South East demos’ for the Ofwat Innovation Mainstreaming Nature-based Solutions project, a flagship five-year innovation project with water industry partners across the UK. You will lead walkovers, report on project opportunities identified, and develop projects on the ground, including natural flood management, riparian corridor enhancement and land management to increase catchment resilience. You will work closely with land managers to co-design feasible NbS options delivering multiple benefits. Your recommendations will be informed by data and evidence, and part of your role will be contributing to the effective collation of this across the Trust and the region. This will include identifying and reviewing nature market opportunities including through Biodiversity Net Gain, water resource, natural flood management and water quality, and you will look to capitalise on these opportunities and find ways to combine them with public funding (e.g. developing agri-environment schemes) to develop blended funding approaches. Working with our regional water companies, you will use your understanding of their drivers and processes to find ways of delivering more nature-based solutions with them in our catchments, building on existing relationships and projects within the Trust and the wider Rivers Trust movement.
Crucially, you will take a collaborative partnership approach, building close relationships with our regional water companies, farmer clusters and other NGOs as well as regulators and local authorities, and provide a vision for these stakeholder groups to drive improvement of our rivers and catchments.

You will be personable and inquisitive, enjoy working with evidence, be able to explain technical concepts in simple terms, engage positively with partners, and be passionate about rivers and the environment.
While the role covers the entire SERT area, we expect to develop a geographic focus towards either the East (Sussex, Kent) or West (Hampshire, Berkshire, Surrey).
