An exciting opportunity has arisen to recruit a new Operations Manager / Deputy Chief Executive for Stepping Stones North Wales as we celebrate our 40th Anniversary.

Stepping Stones is a charity based in North Wales that offers free individual counselling, support, psychoeducational courses and resources as well as group work to adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse. We also support family members, carers and friends.

We are looking for a person who is passionate about the charity sector and who, working with our CEO and with a dynamic team of Trustees, can ensure we operate effectively and can support the delivery of our strategy. The successful candidate will be comfortable with looking at ways to strengthen our processes and systems, so we have even more impact.

Stepping Stones North Wales demonstrates respect for, and embraces the use of, the Welsh Language through all our activities and services. We recognise the need to be appropriately responsive to the linguistic needs of Welsh speakers and we are fully committed to meeting the requirements of the Welsh Language (Wales) Measure 2011 (revised 2021). The ability to communicate effectively in both Welsh and English is desirable for this role although we will welcome applicants who demonstrate a commitment to learning Welsh (which we’ll fully support you in doing) and championing its use at every opportunity.

The position can either be full time (35 hours per week), with a salary of £38,296, or pro-rata 28 hours for the right candidate.

Our preference is for the successful candidate to spend three days each week working from our Wrexham office, with the balance being a home-working option. However, we can consider further flexibility and this can be discussed during the application process.

A formal sift will take place in the final week of June. Interviews for candidates who are successful at this stage will take place during week commencing Monday 8th July.

Job description:

• Responsibility for working with the CEO to develop, implement and monitor the Strategic Plan, the yearly Business Plan and associated processes/documents (policies, guidance, risk register and budgets).
• Responsibility for working with the CEO to increase our outreach through strategic communications and through stakeholder mapping/engagement, including with elected officials across North Wales.
• Responsibility for maintaining good working relationships with commissioners and other funding bodies and for supporting the CEO and trustees in promoting Stepping Stones with current and potential future funders within the statutory third and corporate sectors.
• Responsibility for working closely with colleagues and trustees to network and to maintain an appropriate level of awareness of Stepping Stones’ activities amongst the caring professions, across the charitable sector and in communities across North Wales.
• Accountability for supporting the ongoing recruitment of, and line management of, a number of nominated operational staff within the charity.
• Responsibility for ensuring the financial probity of the charity. Working with the CEO and Finance & Business Support Manager.
• Responsibility for maintaining good working relationships with commissioners and other funding bodies and to promote Stepping Stones with current and potential future funders within the statutory, third and corporate sectors.
• Responsibility for ensuring that all appropriate training and processes are in place with regards to key government standards around Safeguarding, Health and Safety and GDPR in partnership with the Clinical Lead.
• Responsibility for working with the CEO, key staff and trustees to implement an improved and modernised service for our clients, partners and trustees through innovation.
• Responsibility for working with the CEO to draft the Annual Report, and all other statutory reports, adhering to strict deadlines.
• Responsibility for ensuring that the charity has an efficient secretarial/clerical service managed by the Office Support Team.
• Responsibility for drafting relevant communications for clients or dealing with queries or complaints along with the Clinical Lead as appropriate.
• Deputising for the CEO during periods of leave or as required/agreed with the CEO.

£40,500 - £44,100 per annum

What the job involves 

This is an exciting opportunity to join our vibrant Brand and Media (Attention) team within our wider Communications directorate. As the Media and Communications Manager, you’ll be the team’s lead on Health Services, Equity and Improvement (including policy and campaigns) and Research communications, delivering impactful media moments which inspire action and drive positive change for men with, or at risk of, prostate cancer.

You’ll raise the profile of the cause and the brand, co-managing the activity of the charity’s media relations function and protecting the organisation’s principles and reputation. The impactful media messaging that you provide to a range of audiences will secure hard-hitting and compelling coverage, you can see our latest news stories on the Research and Treatment sections of our website.   

You’ll also be acting as line manager to the Senior Media and Communications Officer.

What we want from you 

We’re looking for an inspiring and strategic storyteller, you’ll be an expert in leading communications projects to inspire action and drive change and with a track record of generating media coverage to deliver messages to a range of audiences. 

You’ll be an excellent communicator with a strong understanding of different communication channels and have specialist knowledge of media relations. Experience in building trusted relationships with colleagues, external stakeholders, and journalists is essential. With previous line management experience, you’ll have a motivation to help others achieve their full potential and actively supports our commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion and allyship. 

With excellent organisational skills with strong analytical skills and an ability to digest complex information, often under pressure of tight media deadlines. You’ll have a flexible approach to handling both planned projects and reactive opportunities. 

This role will be fixed term for 13 months covering sabbatical leave.

The role

The communications manager will play a central role in enhancing B Lab UK’s credibility by leveraging our corporate milestones, data, insights, partnerships and public affairs work to reach priority audiences. You will work closely with our campaigns team to influence policymakers and develop thought-leadership to make a compelling case for an alternative to business as usual. You will be responsible for overseeing and optimising B Lab UK’s press office function, including monitoring and responding to reputational risk across the B Corp movement.

• Drive the delivery of core components of the communication strategy, specifically owning our corporate communications, press office and acting as the first port of call for media issues management

Role Summary:

The Communications Executive will work closely with the Head of Communications and Advocacy to implement our communications and media strategy, contributing to organisational, engagement, and brand awareness goals.

You will manage digital channel growth, content calendars, and deliver social media plans to enhance our digital presence and position as experts in global health, social justice and gender equality.

You will create engaging content and ideas for data promotion and brand awareness campaigns, and support the press office function with media engagement throughout the year. 

Skills & Experience:

Essential (1-3 years) experience:

• as a communications professional – you have a motivational, engaging style and can draw out information and ideas from others. 
• in SEO implementation: Conduct keyword research to guide content creation, optimise website and article content for search engines, and monitor, analyse, and report on website SEO performance. 
• in social media channel and content management, growing audiences, increasing visibility and engagement. 
• in email marketing: Design and execute email marketing campaigns to engage Global Health 50/50’s audience, drive traffic to the website, and promote events or publications. Segment email lists and personalise content to increase effectiveness. 
• in digital marketing, creating advertising campaigns across digital platforms. 

Desirable experience:

• Experience in the charity/not-for-profit sector with a digital communications background.

• Develop, implement and manage a dynamic communications plan for Solving Kids’ Cancer UK that encompasses the three key pillars of our work, across all communication channels;
