Job description

Do you have experience giving advice to vulnerable people? Have you managed and supported volunteers to thrive? Are you collaborative and constructive? Are you interested in supporting refugees and want to help a small dynamic charity to develop our reach by setting up and delivering a volunteering programme?

If so, this exciting new role in our charity might be for you!

Reporting to the Director, the Volunteering Manager will recruit, induct and supervise volunteers to deliver advice and casework - enhancing our busy AQS accredited Advice and Casework Service. You will set up systems, plan and deliver training, and identify ways in which volunteers can have both the greatest impact for our service users and gain excellent experience and satisfaction for themselves. We are a friendly team and there is real scope for growth in this role.

About us:

AFRIL is a small, dynamic, community based charity working with asylum seekers, vulnerable migrants, and refugee families in south east London. We support our service users to lift themselves out of poverty and rebuild their lives in the heart of our community. We provide both crisis support to meet immediate need, and longer-term, flexible programmes to tackle the underlying problems. Our work is grounded in the values of professionalism, inclusivity, and solidarity, and our approach to service delivery is one of co-production and empowerment.

AFRIL delivers three core services in the London Borough of Lewisham:

  • The Helping Hands Foodbank Programme - weekly food parcels and baby supplies, together with a range of wellbeing activities such as art@home and our Allotment of Refuge;
  • Rainbow Club Supplementary School, offering weekly supplementary education in English and Maths, arts, music and sports activities to children from refugee, migrant and asylum seeking backgrounds from early years to 11 years old;
  • Advice and Advocacy Service, offering welfare benefits, housing, asylum support and generalist advice, accredited by AQS. The Service also includes immigration advice and represention in partnership with Southwark Law Centre.

AFRIL is an equal opportunities employer. We are a diverse staff team and particularly encourage applications from BAME candidates, LGBTQ+ candidates and those with lived experience of asylum/irregular migration. We welcome applications from candidates of all ages and are committed to supporting qualified people to re-enter the workplace after periods of unemployment for example because of homemaking, redundancy, mental health or previous immigration restrictions. Our office is on the first floor of a community centre and has lift access. We are committed to making reasonable adjustments to support our staff to flourish.

Application Instructions

Please submit your CV along with a cover letter on CharityJob – no more than two sides of A4 – detailing why you are interested in this role and how you meet the person specification.

For queries or an informal discussion about the role, please contact AFRIL’s Director, Sophie Wickham.
