Health & Safety Officer
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Health & Safety Officer to join our Estates Team. In your role as the Health & Safety Officer will be to provide support on an operational basis to the health & safety function.
Role Requirements
- Promote good stakeholder involvement and good safety culture
- Prepare and issue monthly health and safety briefing documents / toolbox talks
- Keep health and safety information up to date, including all fire safety documentation (fire emergency plans, fire safety manuals etc.), the health and safety section of the intranet and shared documents
- Carry out regular walkabouts, including at retail stores, keeping in touch with staff on their safety arrangements and ensuring control measures are in place and effective
- Provide health and safety training and coaching on topics such as, but not limited to, general health & safety (induction and refresher training), fire safety, COSHH, risk assessing and manual handling
- Develop and refresh internal online training to support staff learning experiences
- Carry out general risk assessment, as required, with particular emphasis on retail, regulatory requirements, outings and the clinical environment.
- Update fire risk assessments for low to medium-risk buildings, tracking completion of actions and updating compliance software
- Manage COSHH risk assessments and the COSHH risk register, checking on suitable PPE and storage
- Manage compliance with workstation assessments, including homeworking, using the external management system
- Support teams, enabling them to carry out their risk assessments, including manual handling assessments for inanimate activities
- Develop and keep up to date Safe Operating Procedures for health and safety.
- To undertake other or additional duties that are within your skills and abilities, as the organisation may reasonably require from time to time.

The Cowrie Scholarship Foundation, established in June 2020 (Charity Number 1191471), was set up to enable economically disadvantaged black British students to attend UK universities by providing full scholarships. Black British students are found to be under-represented at many of our universities, and individuals from affluent areas are five times more likely than those from deprived areas to attend a high-tariff university ranked in the top third by entry requirements. While many issues are at play in why more Black British students do not enter university – we aim to remove one fundamental obstacle – the financial cost of university education.
The Foundation has already allocated over 50 scholarships and maintains a busy annual schedule of activity across partner and scholarship management; fundraising, communications and governance.
Key focus:

Support the founder and Project Manager with day-to-day administration of the charity;

Support the founder, board and Project Manager to develop strong relationships with core university and business partners, ambassadors, supporters, Scholars, alumni, and Friends of Cowrie;

About the role:
The role is offered on an initial basis of 6 months’ probation to be upgraded to a year, with the opportunity to renew.

About the role
This is an exciting opportunity to join Sustrans as part of the Connected Neighbourhoods team, working in partnership with East Lothian Council to facilitate a strategic approach to active travel infrastructure development and delivery in the council area, as well as providing support with active travel policies and proposals for the council's planning and pipeline projects.
As the Senior Project Officer, you will be embedded within East Lothian Council, working in partnership with external organisations and across council departments to align policy aims and identify and develop opportunities for investment in active travel. You will support the planning and delivery of active travel interventions and provide expert support and guidance to ensure that walking, wheeling and cycling are integrated into strategies, programmes and projects.
The role is based within the geographical area with regular travel expected to East Lothian Council offices and either Edinburgh or Glasgow hubs.
