FareShare Greater Manchester is looking for volunteer Driver's Assistants to join our busy friendly delivery team with redistributing tonnes of surplus food a month to charities and community initiatives across Greater Manchester.
FareShare is a national charity fighting food poverty and global warming by tackling food surplus. We source overstocked food from retailers and manufacturers and engage many volunteers to help re-distribute it to over 220 frontline charities and community groups across Greater Manchester. These groups, in turn, provide meals to vulnerable people experiencing food poverty, individuals who are homeless, families, and people who are unemployed or socially isolated. This food would otherwise have gone to waste, so we are simultaneously supporting people in need and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Key responsibilities
Working closely with the driver of a temperature-controlled 3.5 tonne Mercedes Sprinter van to deliver surplus food orders to the premises of the benevolent projects we support.
Loading and unloading the vehicle and carrying out a range of tasks, from basic vehicle checks to delivery administration.
The required skills and attributes are:
Reliability and ability to commit to pre-agreed volunteer shifts (ESSENTIAL)
Physical fitness, to take on moving and handling of food orders
Ability to follow procedures and instructions
Good verbal communication skills
Interest in the work of FareShare Greater Manchester and our values
High respect for Health & Safety procedures and standards
In return you will gain:
Career and CV advice and support
A reference for future employers
Reimbursement of travel and lunch expenses
The opportunity to give practical help to fight food poverty and reduce food waste (and associated CO2 emissions)
The opportunity to meet like-minded people and make new friends
Our operating hours are Monday - Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm.
Driver and Driver’s Assistant shifts begin at 8:30am.
We welcome volunteers who can commit to one day a week.
The days and rota hours of volunteering are agreed around your availability.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
You must be resident in the UK and living in Greater Manchester, or within easy commuting distance of our base, in order to volunteer with us. There are no exceptions to this rule. This is because we require volunteers to be able to reliably commit to regular shifts for some of our roles. We are unable to offer sponsorship for overseas applicants.
Know someone else who might be interested in volunteering with us?
Please pass our details on to them as we always welcome new people on our teams. :)
As a leading food charity to tackle hunger, our aim is to help tackle the food poverty issue in Greater Manchester.

Testimonial from our previous Admin Intern:

HELP US LAUNCH MINDSET — AND CHANGE MEN & BOYS’ LIVES IN LONDON
We are ideally seeking volunteers from London but welcome volunteers across England, who can attend meetings and carry out their voluntary tasks virtually to support the operations of MINDSET Charity.
We’re MINDSET Charity, a bold new start‑up charity in London on a mission to equip and empower men and boys with the tools they need for better mental health.
We’re building something powerful — a stigma‑free space where men and boys can learn real, non‑clinical and non‑therapeutic practical skills that strengthen resilience, boost wellbeing and create lasting change. Through motivational interviewing, solution‑focused approaches, self‑improvement practices, life coaching, mentoring and more, we will help men and boys build better habits, better mindsets and a better quality of life.
And right now, we’re getting set up and ready to launch — and we need Admin & Compliance Team Volunteers to help us build the foundations that make everything run smoothly.
YOUR IMPACT WILL BE HUGE
You’ll be joining at the very beginning — helping shape the essential systems, documents and processes that allow MINDSET to operate safely, professionally and confidently.
The Admin & Compliance Team is the backbone of our start‑up phase. Your work will directly influence:
how quickly we can register as a charity
how smoothly our operations run
how organised and efficient our teams become
how safe and compliant our programmes are
how ready we are to launch within the next few months
This is your chance to be part of something meaningful at the very start — shaping a charity that will genuinely change lives across our capital.
WE’RE RECRUITING FOR TWO KEY ADMIN & COMPLIANCE ROLES
1. Admin Support Volunteer / Coordinator / Lead
The organiser and coordinator. You’ll help us stay structured, organised and efficient by supporting day‑to‑day admin tasks, managing documents, creating templates, organising files, and helping build the internal systems that keep MINDSET running smoothly.
2. Policy & Compliance Assistant / Adviser / Coordinator
The detail‑focused safety champion. You’ll help review, format and organise policies, support compliance tasks, assist with charity registration paperwork, and ensure our documents meet best practice standards for safeguarding, data protection and health & safety.
WHAT YOU CAN HELP US BUILD
1. Admin & Organisation
Creating and organising folders
Drafting templates (forms, checklists, documents)
Formatting policies and procedures
Managing shared drives and internal systems
Supporting communication between teams
2. Compliance & Documentation
Reviewing policies for clarity
Formatting governance documents
Supporting charity registration tasks
Helping maintain compliance records
Assisting with safeguarding, data protection and health & safety paperwork
3. Start‑Up Support
Helping build our internal infrastructure
Supporting the Leadership Team with admin tasks
Ensuring documents are accessible, organised and easy to use
Helping create the systems that future teams will rely on
If you love organisation, detail, structure and helping things run smoothly — this is the perfect role for you.
WE’RE NOT JUST LOOKING FOR ANYONE
We’re especially interested in people who:
thrive on the challenge of setting up a new charity
enjoy organising, structuring and improving systems
have an eye for detail and clarity
aren’t afraid to get stuck in, hands‑on, alongside volunteers
bring calm, order and reliability to a fast‑moving start‑up
want to help create a charity that will make a real difference in men’s lives
If you’re someone who loves building strong foundations — this is your moment.

An average day might see you talking to students in a camp to tell them about a new class, or supporting the writing of a grant proposal. Tasks could loosely fall within 4 key areas:
Programmes
Supporting programme coordinators in maintaining the day to day running of their activities with the Youth or Adult Education Programmes
Supporting our children’s teachers or workshop facilitators in the planning or delivery of classes or excursions outside of camps

In certain periods of the year, demand is extremely high, and the shared houses might be full. If you have the means to pay for your own accommodation, please let us know. We would still be happy to host you if space is available. However, in a situation where the shared houses are full, this would allow us to offer an opportunity to someone that cannot afford to pay rent.
Looking for an internship?
If, because of your degree or for any other reason, you would like to have your period at Second Tree credited as an internship, just apply to the vacancy that you’re interested in and mention this.
