​Position Overview

SEED Madagascar is seeking a Volunteer Backend Web Developer to support the migration and redesign of SEED’s website, ensuring a smooth transition. This role will focus on handling back-end and server-side tasks, importing data, implementing security best practices, and providing technical support in the post-migration phase. We are looking for an experienced individual with proven expertise in website migration, database management and server configuration, who is motivated to use these skills to contribute to sustainable development and conservation.

About the organisation

SEED Madagascar is a British Charity working in partnership with communities in the southeast of Madagascar. We integrate high quality community health, sustainable livelihoods, education infrastructure and conservation programmes to support long term, sustainable change and add to international best practice through research and publication across all of our programmatic areas.

Location: Remote

Timeframe: Long-term, part-time, flexible (approx. 3-6 hours per week, with 1-2 hours per week post-migration phase for server-side support and maintenance).

Duties and responsibilities

● Perform full backups before and after website migration in cPanel.

● Export Concrete CMS code files and database content.

● Import data to WordPress using plugins, custom scripts or migration tools.

● Assist with setting up a WordPress staging site.

● Implement security best practices for WordPress.

● Update DNS records.

● Perform PHP updates and custom edits as needed.

● Perform major WordPress upgrades if needed.

● Perform post-migration functionality testing and bug fixes.

● Manage the new website database using cPanel.

● Provide continued/long-term back-end support. Person specification Essential

● Experience using Concrete CMS, WordPress or similar.

● Experience using HTML/CSS/JavaScript languages.

● Knowledge of PHP and SQL/MySQL database.

● Experience with API integration and Linux.

● Knowledge of File Transfer Protocol.

● Familiarity with WordPress plugins.

● Experience with website migration tools, database management, and GitHub repositories.

● Self-motivated, flexible, and able to work independently in a remote context.

Desirable

● Experience working with NGOs, particularly in development, conservation, or humanitarian fields.

About this key role

As Volunteer Communications Support, you will play an important role within the Fundraising and Communications team, working closely with the Senior Media and Publicity Manager and colleagues across St Giles. You will support the creation, scheduling and management of digital content that promotes our work, campaigns and values, helping us reach and engage key audiences. The role will also involve providing general support to the team. 

This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to develop or apply their communications, digital and storytelling skills in a supportive, values-driven environment.

What you’ll be doing:

• Creating digital assets to support St Giles communications campaigns and projects
• Writing engaging, audience-focused digital copy
• Using design software (e.g. Canva and AI tools) to produce content in line with brand guidelines
• Uploading and scheduling digital content across relevant platforms
• Supporting the maintenance and development of the St Giles website
• Researching and sourcing photography through stock image libraries
• Using analytics to help measure performance and engagement
• Assisting with organising events, where required
• Attending meetings relevant to the role and working collaboratively with colleagues
• Ensuring confidentiality, data protection and information security policies are upheld
• Promoting sustainable working practices and environmental responsibility

What we are looking for

• Strong IT skills, including Microsoft Word, SharePoint and Teams
• Experience of producing digital written content
• A sound sense of design and the ability to work within brand and photographic guidelines
• Experience using digital design tools such as Canva (and interest in AI tools such as ChatGPT)
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with strong storytelling ability
• Experience uploading, scheduling and managing digital content
• Knowledge of producing email marketing copy
• Ability to work independently, manage priorities and collaborate effectively as part of a team
• An understanding of, and sensitivity to, the issues faced by people with lived experience and the barriers they may encounter

A Basic DBS check is required for this role.

About the position

The IT support role is vital to the organisation, as they will have the responsibility for the maintenance of the technical appliances used in the organisation. The IT support will not be required to come in on a weekly basis, but upon request as for when it is needed. The main tasks for the IT support will be reassuring all technical appliances are updates, responding to potential breakdowns and assuring electrical safety. Technical skills are required, in addition to flexibility, as they would need to quickly respond to potential breakdowns etc.

The role provides you with flexibility and autonomy at work. Where necessary, specific training will also be provided to help you develop and grow your skill set.

• Ensure all computers and other electrical equipment is updated.

• Ensure the safety of electrical equipment.

• Respond to breakdowns of electrical equipment.

• Assist in the functions of IT-packages.
