Job description

Financial Controller (Maternity cover – 1-year fixed term contract) 

Location: Birmingham (hybrid or office working) 

Salary: Up to £53,500 per annum dependent upon experience 

Hours: Full time 37.5 hrs preferred, though will consider flexible working of 30+ hrs per week 

We are seeking an experienced Financial Controller for a temporary maternity cover (minimum 1 year). Reporting to the Director of Finance, the role oversees day-to-day charity finances and a team of five staff. The ideal candidate is a qualified CCAB accountant (ACA or ACCA preferred) with hands-on experience, particularly in charity and grant accounting, including deferred and restricted income. 

Key requirements include: 

  • Strong understanding of financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management. 

  • Proficiency in Excel and accounting software (Access Dimensions and FocalPoint preferred) 

  • Experience in managing all ledgers, including payroll 

  • Ability to communicate complex financial information to non-financial staff 

  • Experience in liaising with budget holders from across the organisation to set and monitor budgets 

  • Good analytical, investigative, and report-writing skills 

This role calls for an experienced candidate with a proactive approach who has the ability and drive to analyse accounts, investigate discrepancies, take ownership of tasks, and seek continuous improvement.
