• Job Title: Head of Direct Services
• Location: Remote, or option to be based in our Nottingham office.
• Salary: £47,380 FTE; actual salary £28,428 for 21 hours per week 
• Contract: Fixed-term maternity cover, January to end of November 2027 

ABOUT THE ROLE

This is an opportunity to lead and develop Headway UK’s national direct services during a key period for the charity.You will provide senior oversight across services supporting people affected by brain injury, their families and professionals, while also shaping the early development of a potential new Trusted Partner Scheme. 

The role brings together service leadership, quality improvement and relationship-building across acquired brain injury, health, social care, rehabilitation, case management and criminal justice. You will lead experienced managers and work closely with the CEO, senior colleagues, professionals, providers and people with lived experience of brain injury. 

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

• Provide senior leadership and oversight of Headway UK’s Helpline, Justice Programme, Solicitors Directory, Emergency Fund, Training, Approved Provider scheme and Brain Injury Identity Cards. 
• Lead, support and develop the Direct Services team, providing clear direction and promoting a collaborative, inclusive and accountable culture. 
• Oversee service planning and performance, including objectives, budgets, service data, quality, risk and opportunities to strengthen evaluation. 
• Lead the scoping and early development of a potential Trusted Partner Scheme covering areas such as case management, brain injury care, private rehabilitation and other specialist services. 
• Build constructive relationships with people affected by brain injury and with professionals and providers across health, social care, rehabilitation, case management and criminal justice. 
• Support the delivery and development of the Approved Provider scheme, including budget oversight, moderation of assessment reports, relationships with units and quality and consistency. 
• Work with Headway UK’s Designated Safeguarding Lead, report to the CEO on performance and emerging issues, and contribute to senior leadership and trustee committee discussions as required. 

ABOUT YOU

• Have significant professional experience in acquired brain injury, neurorehabilitation or a closely related field.

• Have experience of leading services and managing staff, priorities, performance budgets and resources. 

• Be able to develop, review and improve services, turning evidence and stakeholder insight into practical proposals. 

• Understand the health, social care, case management and rehabilitation landscape relevant to people affected by brain injury. 

• Have experience of safeguarding adults at risk and providing appropriate management support around safeguarding concerns. 

• Be able to lead through others, build trust and work credibly with people affected by brain injury, clinicians, case managers, social workers, providers, trustees and senior colleagues. 

• Bring strong judgement, communication and organisational skills, with the ability to manage a complex portfolio independently within a part-time, fixed-term role. 

A clinical qualification is welcome but is not essential. Experience of quality assurance, accreditation, provider assessment or standards development would also be helpful, as would knowledge of private or independent case management, clinical, care or rehabilitation services.
