The Role

What will I be doing?

As the Community Support Officer (Engagement and Volunteering), you’ll be at the heart of our work to build a vibrant, inclusive physics community. You’ll be the first point of contact for our volunteer-led Groups, Nations, and Branches — helping them to thrive, connect, and deliver meaningful activities that bring physics to life.

Your role will be varied, people-focused, and purpose-driven. You’ll:

• Support and empower volunteer committees with planning, elections, onboarding, and governance
• Design and deliver engaging training and resources to help volunteers feel confident and connected
• Celebrate and recognise contributions through awards, spotlight stories, and appreciation campaigns
• Coordinate inclusive events and forums that foster collaboration and community
• Use data and feedback to evaluate impact, improve experiences, and inform decision-making
• Champion collaboration and best practice across committees, departments, and the wider IOP network

You’ll work closely with passionate physicists, volunteers, and colleagues across departments — from Communications and EDI to Learning and Skills — to ensure every member feels supported, valued, and inspired.

Projects you work on may include:

• Creating a new Volunteering Guide and Welcome Handbook
• Designing and delivering onboarding and training for new committee members
• Organising flagship events like the annual Committee Welcome Day
• Helping shape our first Volunteering Development Plan and inclusive volunteering strategy

You’ll also be part of a wider team of Community Support Officers, each with their own focus area, working together to build a connected, thriving membership community.

Who will I work with?

As a Community Support Officer (Engagement and Volunteering), you’ll be part of a dynamic, collaborative environment where relationships matter. You’ll work closely with:

• The Community Support team and Student & Early Career Support Officer – sharing insights, coordinating efforts, and supporting each other to deliver a seamless member experience.
• The wider Membership department – especially colleagues in Professional Registration, Events & Conferences, and CPD – to ensure volunteer activities align with member development and recognition.
• Cross-functional teams across the IOP – including Science and Innovation, Education and Workforce, EDI, and Public Engagement – to embed inclusive practices and amplify the impact of volunteer-led initiatives.
• Members across our Groups, Nations and Branches (GNBs) – building trusted relationships with committee members, volunteers, and local champions to support their work and celebrate their contributions.
• External partners and sister societies – occasionally collaborating on joint events, campaigns, or volunteer initiatives that extend our reach and deepen our impact.

Job Description:

· Work with the Programme team, to design and deliver educational resources, workshops and conferences including our Youth & Democracy, Rule of Law, and intergenerational change programme areas;

· Deliver Exploring Ethics and other Cumberland Lodge workshops as requested;

· Identify potential partners and collaborate with stakeholders related to programme activity;

· Produce funding proposals;

· Produce and/or editing briefing papers and reports when required;

· Produce digital content for online learning and engage regularly with the community engagement platform, including identifying topics, producing webinars and podcasts;

Person specification

You’ll have:

Essential Criteria:

· Undergraduate degree in a relevant social science or humanities discipline;

· Experience working with young people and youth organisations;

· Experience of facilitating group discussion in a learning environment;

· Experience of project and event organisation and management, from inception to evaluation;

· Experience identifying and applying for funding;

· Excellent communications skills, verbal and written, for a range of audiences;

· Ability to build and maintain networks across a range of sectors;

· Experience using a range of IT packages and platforms.

The successful candidate will have a graduate qualification as a minimum requirement, in a relevant social science or humanities discipline, as the role will involve developing programmes with academic content. Working with young people, and experience designing and delivering teaching and/or training material, in formal and/or non-formal education settings, is also an essential criteria.

Desirable Criteria:

· Postgraduate degree in a relevant social science or humanities discipline;

· Conducting research into programme content;

· Design and delivery of online educational material (e.g. podcasting, Arc GIS Storymaps, animations etc).

Hours: 37.5 hours per week

Location: Based at Cumberland Lodge in Windsor Great Park. (Applicants should be aware that Cumberland Lodge is not easily accessible by public transport). 

Hybrid working available, with a minimum 3 days a week in the office.

The role requires flexible working.  There will be some weekend and evening duties, including programme events, facilitating workshops for visiting groups, talks and tours of the Lodge (shared on a rota basis). Accommodation will be provided on site when evening work is required.

Benefits

Annual leave: 33 days including Bank Holidays. The charity is closed over the Christmas period which will be deducted from the leave allocation. Use of a company car for business-related trips.

Crisis is the national charity for people experiencing homelessness. In 2024 we embarked on our new 10-year strategy for ending homelessness. We know it is not inevitable. We know together we can end it.

This is an exciting new role in Crisis to deliver upstream prevention in partnership with Brent Council in Harlesden by supporting a newly set up Neighbourhood Team and contribute towards its key aims of preventing homelessness and income insecurity as part of Crisis and Brent Council’s place-based approach.

You will:

• Be a first point of contact for people in Harlesden who are at risk of homelessness, who are also likely living with debt / income insecurity and who may not have engaged with services or who fall outside homeless services’ criteria or statutory level support and who could benefit from holistic earlier support.

• Through high quality, person-centred IAG, coaching, advocacy, casework and a range of relational methods you will enable local people in Harlesden to resolve issues themselves, access services or be linked to the integrated neighbourhood team to help to address to address barriers and seek solutions.

• Reach out to people in the community, listen carefully to their story as you work with them to agree options and possibilities, and identify a range of solutions to support their goals, improving income security and preventing possible future homelessness.

• As lead worker create person centred support for an individual, to build collaborative, consistent and Psychologically Informed relationships with individuals and stakeholders from a range of services within and outside the integrated neighbourhood team.

About you

• You have worked within a relevant sector that supports people e.g., homelessness, mental health, drug and alcohol treatment, social care, education and skills, youth work, community development

• You can demonstrate awareness of barriers to engagement and participation experienced by people facing homelessness or a future risk of homelessness and other forms of social exclusion with an understanding of how they might be overcome.

• You have experience of assessing presenting needs, and an understanding of strengths-based assessments and action planning. Empathy and understanding of the barriers to accessing services and support faced by homeless people including mental health issues, and awareness of ways to over-coming them, including planning and reviewing actions and goals, meeting client needs and priorities.

• You work collaboratively with the ability to build and manage successful relationships with external agencies and relevant service providers and successfully advocate on behalf of clients and strong interpersonal skills.

• You have experience of delivering high quality information, advice and guidance or coaching and managing a caseload within a relevant sector, holding a Level 3 Information, Advice and Guidance or coaching qualification or be willing to work towards one.

• You are able to effectively manage own workload, including a varied caseload, with excellent organisational skills and the ability to manage conflicting priorities, exercise judgment under pressure and balance competing demands and willingness to reflect upon and develop own practice.

• You are a strong team player and ability to work on own initiative and seek support and advice where appropriate

• You can demonstrate knowledge of safeguarding and commitment to act in compliance with safeguarding policy and procedures

Role Purpose 

You will be expected to be open to work in different initiatives across our England portfolio.As a funding officer you will assess applications for funding and manage grants using best practice, thematic expertise, and the experience of customers and stakeholders to improve our grant making and inform our decision making. You will also ensure that both grant management and assessment play an effective part in contributing to the Fund’s knowledge and learning as a grant maker.

Our partner seeks a driven and astute grants finance officer to support in the financial management and monitoring of projects being implemented in Asia, Africa and Latin America. This is a newly created position, and will suit someone who is meticulous, has strong attention to detail and able to manage relationships with a number of global stakeholders.

• Manage the financial transactions and entries, prepare and process income receipts and maintain accurate digital records and ensure proper filing of all financial documentation on internal systems.
