About the role
You will be playing a pivotal role in the senior leadership of the fundraising directorate, working alongside the Head of Relationship Fundraising and Partnerships. You will help to shape the ambitious future for fundraising at East Anglian Air Ambulance, delivering the Future Proofed Giving strategy, growing income, and developing a brilliant team of fundraisers, stewardship specialists and engagement experts.
Key responsibilities include:
Building a brand-new engagement, stewardship, retention and development function for the fundraising directorate including; building the team, embedding the function across the fundraising and wider teams; This function will be the beating heart of the fundraising team and ensure we can deliver our ambitious strategy.
You will specifically lead on the strategic direction of key income streams including; community fundraising, events, individual giving, prize led fundraising (lottery), in memory fundraising, gift aid and gifts in wills.
You will lead and develop, a great team who are delivering exceptional stewardship activity to retain supporters for longer and targeted marketing activity, uplift and conversion campaigns and giving the supporter a great experience.
You and the team will be planning and implementing new product, activity, events testing – from development through to implementation. Stewardship journey mapping, development, implementation and monitoring for all income streams in your remit and providing stewardship support to other fundraising functions.
You’ll bring:
Significant experience of developing successful fundraising strategies and leading and developing fundraising departments, and teams.
You will have an excellent understanding of the different fundraising disciplines you will be responsible for and one or two you might even be an expert in.
You will have been using data and insights to inform plans and activity and recent experience of using marketing techniques and channels, ideally in a fundraising setting, to engage with specific audiences.
Giving supporters a great experience will drive you and being a fan of yellow and helicopters will probably be essential.

About the role
You will be playing a key role in the senior leadership of the fundraising directorate, working alongside the two Heads of Fundraising. You and your team will provide hugely important support functions for the charity, including; delivering fantastic event experiences for supporters, applying for significant funding, ensuring the smooth running and administration of the fundraising function and specifically for the two largest income areas in fundraising - lottery and legacies.
Key responsibilities include:
Put simply, you will be responsible for developing a future proofed administrative function that can manage all fundraising and supporter administration, processing and fulfilment requirements.
Providing senior leadership and direction to the Trust and Grants, Gifts in Wills administration and events delivery functions of the fundraising directorate. At the same time managing key external relationships with stakeholders, third party providers and contractors inc. our lottery canvassing company, lottery CRM, fundraising systems, insight contractors and other providers.
Collaborating with Information Systems and Finance teams to ensure that all fundraising insight, reporting and supporter data is accessible and up to date. Commissioning the development of new dashboards or reports to ensure the fundraising team have everything they need to make informed decisions and to grow income.
Proactively auditing and reviewing current activity and processes. Developing a culture of continuous improvement, through collaboration with other teams and key stakeholders, to address current and future need, plus identifying areas of efficiency, and where we can add value for supporters.
Becoming our in-house expert on fundraising governance and compliance, staying up to date with fundraising legislation and regulation to help ensure we are always compliant in our activity, policies and process across the fundraising department.
You’ll bring:
Significant experience leading or managing teams or functions in a charity and/or fundraising setting. Alongside this, you will have recently been working in an environment where you have been identifying and delivering improvements to operational systems and processes.
You will have a proven experience in project management and if you have knowledge of lean processing, value stream mapping or continuous improvement methods this would be a real bonus. You will be great at managing significant third-party contracts, supplier tendering and procurement, and contract negotiations.
Your knowledge of fundraising practices, governance, legislation and regulation will be great, but there will be opportunity to learn and develop this if you need it. A good working knowledge of the Code of Fundraising Practice, Gambling Commission and Charity Commission rules would be fantastic.
Overall, you will have the right mindset to get stuff done, solve problems and find ways to continuously improve processes and activity – being a fan of helicopters and the colour yellow, would be great too!

About Essex and Herts Air Ambulance Trust (EHAAT)
Essex & Herts Air Ambulance, unlike NHS emergency services, is a charity. The free life-saving service is provided 24/7 by helicopters and by rapid response vehicles.
Each critical care team consists of a pilot and co-pilot, a pre-hospital care doctor and a critical care paramedic.
They can be rushed to the scene with life-saving support equipment to deliver advanced clinical care, usually only available in the hospital emergency department.
Job Purpose
Sitting within the Philanthropy team, you will lead and grow our Legacy and In Memory income streams. As an experienced and compassionate manager, you will develop and deliver strategies that inspire supporters to leave a gift in their Will or give in memory of loved ones, helping to secure vital long-term income for our life-saving service.
You will combine strategic thinking, creativity and sensitivity to drive measurable income growth, while delivering high-quality, personalised supporter stewardship. You will also play an important role in building a strong legacy pipeline and shaping meaningful In Memory opportunities that reflect and respond to supporter motivations.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Strategy, Growth & Pipeline
- Develop and deliver a clear legacy and in memory strategy aligned to income targets and organisational priorities
- Build and manage a strong pipeline from awareness through to pledge and realisation
- Identify and implement growth opportunities across products, campaigns, partnerships and digital channels
- Monitor market trends and insights to drive continuous improvement
- Contribute to long-term financial planning through forecasting and income modelling
Legacy Giving
- Lead integrated, multi-channel campaigns to promote Gifts in Wills
- Develop effective supporter journeys to increase consideration and conversion
- Manage relationships with legacy pledgers and prospects, delivering high-quality stewardship
- Work with legal and will-writing partners to maximise uptake
- Oversee legacy administration, including Legacy Link (approx. one day per week), ensuring all processes are handled professionally and sensitively
In Memory Giving
- Develop and grow in memory products, including tribute funds, appeals and bespoke initiatives
- Work closely with the Patient and Family Liaison team to deliver a compassionate, high-quality experience for bereaved families and supporters
- Strengthen digital in memory journeys in collaboration with marketing and digital teams
- Increase engagement and lifetime value of in memory supporters
- Integrate in memory activity into wider fundraising campaigns
Performance & Insight
- Set and deliver annual budgets, income targets and KPIs (FY26/27: £3.3m legacy income; £360,000 In Memory income)
- Monitor performance and optimise activity using data and insight
- Ensure accurate records and compliance with relevant regulations and best practice
- Provide regular reporting on performance, pipeline and risks/opportunities
As EHAAT is a patient focused emergency medical charity, we feel it is essential that all our staff are competent and confident in the delivery of CPR and use of an AED (defibrillator) in an emergency. For this reason, you will need to complete mandatory, in-house CPR and AED awareness training annually.
Person Specification
Knowledge / Skills
- Proven experience in fundraising, with strong experience in legacy and/or in memory giving (essential)
